Strength training anatomy is also my favorite book! It made my skill level sky rocket compared to my skill level before. Dynamic Figure drawing was my first book though and taught me A LOT! I still use some of the techniques from that. Another great book is human anatomy for artists by Eliot Goldfinger! Massively useful!

I never thought about it much, but youre right. When I first got Burne Hogarths book, I couldnt make it work. Once I got some other anatomy background, it was much better understood.

Received Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton today. It good but the colour key does not exactly match the drawing keys. I am left wondering the name of the part of the body relating to the key. Very thorough book in contents for a life drawing manuel.

+Fantastic Anatomy! that it showed proportions at different ages, measurements like how the head is the same size of the foot, its good for referencing different parts of the body especially the more rendered drawings in it, plus it also has a short expressions page and a few pages of heads and facial features in different angles.

How I would suggest you go is - 1) Draw a figure from imagination - this lets you know what you know and what you didn't know. 2) Draw figures from observation - This is to let you know which parts of the anatomy you already "recognize" and which seem foreign/unknown/strange to you. 3) NOW go into the anatomy book and using your figure drawings as a guide, go the parts of the body which you are most unable to visualize/understand/recognize and draw them - Bones first, then muscles. General tip - If you want to understand a large body part, tackle it in sections - For example - If I want to understand the leg, then focusing on the whole leg at once and drawing it will not be helpful - there's too much. Instead, divide it into the upper leg and lower leg and divide the upper leg down further so that you're only focusing on 1 "muscle group" at a time. Make it a weekly thing - Study the upper leg in 2 days, then spend 2 days studying the lower leg, then spend the next 2 days studying the leg in different positions, practicing "recognition" and "spotting" the muscles you studied previously. This is how I learned anatomy as a self-taught artist and you can customize it however you want to suit your needs. Remember to break down difficult tasks into manageable chunks so you don't overwhelm yourself. Anatomy is difficult, some of the greatest minds in art thought it worth their time to study it so its a good thing for you to do the same. Good luck!

dang, dead_zombies is a master sage. The only thing I could think to add from personal experence is to try to really imagine the anatomy you're drawing in 3D, as well as imagine how it feels inside the person (yourself). I guess just using your imagination to really focus and consider what your drawing is something that really helps me improve much faster then when I'm not imagining that hard.

I think you dismiss the most important book "How to Draw the Clothed Figure by Barbara Bradley".......how many naked men are you going draw during your art career. And most people just don't have the musculature shown in most of these books.....not to mention they all have clothes covering 90% of their bodies.

  • @PenandBlade

I'm honestly not that into that book... had to get it for school and didn't find it very helpful for the beginning/intermediate figure drawing stages--maybe when I get to more advanced stages but yea... For me it's really hard to try to draw clothes before having a really solid understanding of unclothed anatomy. For now I'm just trying to get good at drawing super buff (mostly naked?) dudes I guess haha. Basically I just haven't seriously studied/practiced drawing women or clothed figures very much yet.
