FIGHTING FRIGID TEMPS WHILE WINTER CAMPING - WOOD HEAT VS DIESEL AIR HEAT!! (THE EXPERIMENT)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I take to the remote wilderness in Labrador and set up my winter tent. Starting with wood heat, I then shift to Diesel Air Heat and test to see if it can keep my dogs and I warm throughout the frigid Canadian Winter night.

I regularly install and repair the legit German heaters (Espar and Webasto) at my job. I wouldn’t be comfortable with any part of the exhaust inside the tent. Leave the heater outside. If you want the efficiency of the pre-heated air from inside the tent run a separate 3” intake hose from inside the tent out to the heater air intake. The small intake hose is for the combustion air, not the heated air, it can also stay outside. Plus this would move the fuel pump farther away and less noticeable. I would also open the cabinet and make sure the pump is rubber isolated, if not that could be where the extra noise is coming from. Thanks for making the video!

Chuck, the small black air intake pipe that you mention is for the combustion air. Ideally that would be outside so it doesn't use up the air inside the tent and then shoot it out the exhaust. It uses very little so I wouldn't worry about it. The heater pulls air from the back of the unit, pushes across the heat exchanger where the combustion is, then blows it out the 3" pipe. So having it inside definitely makes it more efficient that way as its heating the already warmer air. I personally like having mine outside, so I have a second 3" return pipe that I attach to the back of the unit and run inside the tent to pull the warmed air through. Makes a huge difference than just having it warming the outside air like you did in your previous video. Mine works very well to about -25C, but starts to struggle any colder than that.

The diesel Vevor has two modes. Thermostat is one. The other is continuous combustion, where you can dial in the amount of heat. In combustion mode, the fire never goes out, uses very little electricity. In thermostat mode, the igniter has to get red hot which uses a lot of electricity. Combustion mode uses one tenth of the battery as the thermostat mode. The exhaust can get plugged with snow and ice if left unheated. Better to poke out the tent when you are ready to start it. Your wood stove, if left assembled, will draft the heat out of your tent. Get it to to -20c or -30c, and the Vevor is marginal. Bring the heat ducts into the sleeping bag! LOL.

If the Bluetti gear wasn't so heavy you could have just used an electric blanket or pad, but of course it wouldn't heat up your whole tent. Electric heaters in general are HUGE power drains, worse than air conditioners in the summer, but electric blankets will keep you warm all night on very little power.

That diesel heater sounds annoyingly loud with that pump pulsing . When we go ice camping we just use a buddy heater . Quiet, efficient, easy. Wood stoves burn out to quick, run super hot, then have to put wood on to often. Those diesel heaters definitely have their place though. Thanks for the comparison Chuck!

Hey Chuck! after watching your videos on that heater I think I will get one for myself. It will be ideal for melting snow and ice out of my snow blower. My garage isn’t heated so I think one of those heaters setting next to my snowblower with my tent hunting blind over all of it will be the answer. I love how well behaved your dogs are. Does anyone hunt rabbits up there using dogs? It’s so much fun. Happy trails.

That little inexpensive heater sure looks like the answer to the elimination of broken sleep from topping up the wood stove in the middle of the night. I wonder how well it would work in my 20x24 insulated cabin with the wood stove? Of course eastern NL doesn't get your extreme cold temperatures but it may keep it comfortable for when the fire dies down. Another thing, why is it that when I watch your videos I am compelled to dig through my deep freeze to take out a chunk of moose, trout, rabbit ....now I can add Partridge to my list because I just got back from visiting Labrador. Looks like I will be going north twice a year now... Fishing in the spring and bird hunting in the fall. I totally enjoy your camera work, it takes a lot of work to make your audience feel like they are right there with you.

Great Video as always! Happy Birthday to big butt how old is she now? Well the new machines in the shed and wouldn’t you know it rained and most of what we had for snow is gone😢I am wondering how long the diesel heater will run on a deep cycle battery . Was wondering to how it will stand up to a good sleigh ride was trying to come up with an idea for a box to put it in.I quickly tried mine and was hoping the jackery would run it but not enough amps to fire it up😢 so will have to use a battery. Loved the cook up and glad to see your better half made it out for the evening take care and we will see you in the next one! Ian

How much fuel does that diesel heater consume? Whenever, I've winter camped with a hot tent, I would ensure my sleep system was rated for at least -40C and I would let my stove burn out over night. In a wood area, the fuel supply for the wood stove is pretty abundant. If got overly cold overnight, I could just light my wood stove to warm it up. I never had to do that in all the trips I took.

  • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors

100% bone dry with diesel heat. Anything heated with propane like a buddy heater leaves outrageous amount of condensation plus emits a large amount of Carbon monoxide

@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors That is not what I inquired about. A 12v battery (deep cycle or conventional automotive) in reasonable condition at rest no load or draw should be something like 12v. However, it is not indicative of battery life capacity. For example... running a little capacity test light in the field might reveal you lost a 1/4, 1/3, charge etc.
