Few possible misconceptions to be cleared here: First, In the game vs Colombia. Peruvian Captain Paolo Guerrero took the free kick on goal because he was too concentrated on where to place it and ignored Peruvian midfielder Cueva telling him it was an indirect. He explained this multiple times. Please, do not believe that the had an agreement for him to take the shot and Ospina would let it touch his hand and go in. Cuadrado and James Rodriguez's reaction says otherwise. Also, Ospina has said that he believed James Rodriguez's head touched the ball. Secondly, these fireworks set in front of New Zealands hotel in Peru are a part of qualifying in South America. I can recall the same happening in Chile and Argentina. Do I agree with it? No. But do not think that it's these dirty unsportsmanlike peruvians that started this or decided to use trickery out of the blue. Lastly, Paolo Guerrero did not test positive for Cocaine. Rather, he tested positive for a very low amount of a chemical found in cocaine; Benzoylecgonine Also found in "mate de coca" which is a coca tea commonly used in South America for health benefits. He had the Flu the week of the Peru V Argentina game and he drank tea to recover. However, he never asked for mate de coca. He requested normal tea and claims the teapot or cup must've been tainted with mate de coca remnants.(It was widely reported on Peruvian television that he had the flu and could miss the game. This flu was not fabricated to explain away the positive test.) The hair folical drug tests he had performed on himself in Canada and Brasil suggest he did not consume any cocaine. TAS and Wada also suggested he did not consume cocaine nor did he look for a competitive advantage. It was a mistake that they claim he was responsible for. He appealed to the supreme Court in Switzerland and on the grounds that TAS's ban was overly severe based on facts of the case. The Switzerland court agreed and has decided to expel the TAS decision and thus Paolo Guerrero is now eligible to play for and will play for Peru in the world cup.

Thank you for finally posting this video! I'm Peruvian, but fyi, I will never agree with the whole let's-not-let-the-Kiwis-sleep-peacefully plot. Great video, I just wish you could've talked a little about how we suffered and failed miserably to qualify to all the following World Cup finals, and how our team manager Ricardo Gareca (whom as a young player kicked us out of Mexico 86) achieved what his predecessors couldn't. I guess the massive joy that exploded all over the entire country that Nov 15th cannot be summed up in a video. I daresay we celebrated even more than the Egyptians! More than half of Peru's population was born AFTER 1982, we grew up with our parents' stories about the glorious 70s, believing we would never see our lovely jerseys in the World Cup. But we're back, and I sincerely hope we will do our best in Russia.

Very well done, South America is a continent rich in footballing stories, and with the most difficult World Cup qualifiers in the world, I wish all the best to Peru's national team in Russia.

Thank you so much Tifo for making a video for us, people my generation have never seen our country in a WC, I am 23 and almost 15 million peruvians like me have always seen our team underperform, we only heard the stories of the golden generation when we were only behind Argentina and Brazil. This is truly a first in our lifetime....

Somebody should update this story up to June 2018...including all the friendly matches won by Peru afterwards (Croatia, Iceland, Scotland, Saudi Arabia...) and the return of GUERRERO eventually to the team!! ...a real Cinderella story of Modern Football! ;)

We got so lucky but I like to see that peru isn’t a team just happy being at the World Cup they are showing that they are capable of going further than the group stages

I'm from Peru, we are really excited for the WC. People got crazy after we qualified, everything you see or hear these days is only football. The faith of 32 millions of peruvians is on 11 players that will try to make history. ARRIBA PERÚ CARAJO!

Good video overall but I noticed 2 inconsistencies: 1) Perú didn't lose 0-2 in Quito in the first round. That match happened towards the end of the Qualy and Perú won for the first time there. 2) Paolo Guerrero's doping issue was made public days before the journey to New Zealand, not after qualifying.

Excellent, you could not describe it better, the qualifiers in South America are the most difficult in the world, so they are interesting from beginning to end, by history Peru has always been involved in the South American football circle, along with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, unfortunately due to acts of corruption in its federation and acts of indiscipline in its players they declined in their games and could not manage to qualify to previous World Cups, I'm glad that Peru has returned to the place they left for a good period of time, the unique football style they have makes them a dangerous national team in South America.

Yo why do you have to talk trash about the Venezuelan team 😂 I know we suck but we do our best. Our u-20 team is very promising though. They got 2nd place at the u-20 World Cup in 2017 and after our coach decided to start playing the u-20 players in the qualifiers we didn’t loose a single game.

I’m from New Zealand and we need to learn to stop being so nice for real not only did we waste chance in Wellington we should have played dirty like Peru did delaying flights, make sure they are last in the queue to get a terminal at the airport, fireworks outside hotels, we should have made their changing room as small as it could be, we should have done a haka before the game and fouled Peruvians and not get carded accordingly due to home advantage Sadly we tried to match them for skill which wasn’t a good idea we were outsmarted and outplayed Peru were the better team and if I had the choice I would have played dirty as well respect

I was very proud of Peru for returning to the World Cup. As an American of Peruvian descent, i was celebrating with my whole family and we cried for their return.

Mate, it wasn't cocaine, it was a chemical substance that is found also in cocaine. This substance is also found in COCA leaves, those coca leaves are ingredients of some tea, that tea is pretty common in Peru and some other countries in that area since it helps digestive system, peruvian families drink that all the time. By the way, you know coca leaves are not cocaine, right?
