Fiberglass and honeycomb core dinghy holders fabrication

If you're just learning to make things with these materials, it helps to do some small projects first before moving on to larger things. This way mistakes involve small quantities of material. It also helps if these small projects are non-critical and preferably non-structural. Some of this can be taught, but you learn the most by going out and making something. Hopefully your experience will be a bit smoother if you learn from my mistakes. This was my first project with honeycomb and also the first project of any size with fiberglass.

Instead of gelcoat, fair it and paint it with a one part Marine urethane paint

Thanks! that sounds a lot easier. If I don't have a spray gun, any advice about getting it to lay down and give a smooth finish if I roll it on? Should I thin it out a lot so it flows out and lays down flatter before drying? If I roll on something thick, it tends to leave an orange-peel texture, but thats mostly my experience with gelcoat and indoor wall paint. Whats a good urethane to use and should I thin it with something and if so, what? Is there a special primer to use with it? And do you think this urethane will flow out and make a smoother finish than the paints I've seen so far? Thanks for any advice you care to leave here.

Wax paper to smooth it while it dries maybe? That’s the cheap solution. I know there is a professional sheet of stuff they use to smooth the resin after it’s applied but I’m only learning too!

Nice suggestion. I've used that with various degrees of success. Its great for making sure you don't accidentally glue the part to something. I wrap 4x4 blocks with it and use it to prop up parts when using resin or gelcoat sometimes. I also used it on the rotten core repair a year ago where my patch goes around a corner. It helped make a neat radius by sticking the wax paper to the outside of the final layer of repair. On big, flat areas, I can't keep myself from trying to smooth it with my hand and making big waves that I have to sand through later. Given all the sanding involved, it would probably be worth experimenting with it a little more, maybe laying a sheet of glass on top of the wax paper instead of hand-smoothing? The wax paper also lets regular resin harden completely. Normally polyester laminating resin stays a bit tacky so you can lay another layer on top without sanding first. If you keep the air off of it, then it will harden completely. For gelcoat (works with resin as well) there is a wax and styrene mixture that you can add to the liquid resin or gelcoat that floats to the top of the resin making a waxy film that lets the resin cure completely. Wax paper can serve this purpose instead. A few of the small patches I did on the sailboat using thickened resin "peanut butter" were covered with wax paper so they would cure completely. I wasn't sure if the wax would float to the surface with all that thickener in the resin, but sticking wax paper to the top of the resin let it harden completely. Thanks again for the suggestion. Everyone working with fiberglass should have a roll of wax paper handy.
