Ferrari-Lancia D50A (1956) Grand Prix Car - 265Hp 2.5-Litre V8 Engine - Lovely RAW sound at FOS 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This extraordinary example of the 1956 Grand Prix Ferrari-Lancia D50A took part in the 2022 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS). The Formula 1 single-seater built by Lancia raced in the 1954-1955 seasons. With the death of their top driver Alberto Ascari, the Turin manufacturer decides to abandon racing and donate the cars to Scuderia Ferrari. These will race in the 1956 season, winning the world championship with pilot Juan Manuel Fangio. Designed by Vittorio Jano, it has the characteristic of having fuel tanks placed on each side, overhanging the body of the car, and between the front and rear wheels. Under the front bonnet, we find a 2.5-litre 90° V8 engine capable of developing 265Hp at 8,500 rpm. The suspensions are independent wheels at the front and a De Dion bridge at the rear. The clutch/gearbox/differential unit is at the end, and the gearbox, arranged transversely, is 5-speed. They are the lightest single-seater of the period, weighing about 650Kg.
I have to thank my friends and KZreadrs ‪@19Bozzy92‬, ‪@MattyB727‬ & ‪@NM2255‬ with whom I collaborated to realise this video. Enjoy! 😉
Buona visione! 😉

More than "Ferrari - Lancia D50" I would define it as "Lancia - Ferrari D50". The Drake received a beautiful and ready winning car from the Lancia family. Today I look at Lancia Strato's and Lancia Thema 8.32 with different eyes. Thanks for the great video.

Thanks, Lorenzo, for your comment; as you said, Lancia left Ferrari a car that proved to be a winner, which happened with the conquest of the world championship in 1956. It must be noted that it was in the hands of Fangio. I thought about the name, but I preferred to put Ferrari at the beginning because the car bears the Prancing Horse badge, and in that season, it was a car of his team and no longer Lancia.

Lord Bamford's Lancia-Ferrari D50A. That car represents the Lancia Ferrari in its 1956 guise when raced by Scuderia Ferrari. Now, some people didn't like that time. They bemoan those times that some of the Lancia D50's most distinctive and innovative features got discarded under the time the cars ran for Ferrari. Take those pannier fuel tanks flanking the sides of the original car, for example. In 1956, those side tanks became just fairings between the wheels, the fuel now relocated to a large tank in the tail, making the car behave more or less like the other F1 cars of the time.... But, there's a reason for that... Ferrari at the time, still uses Englebert tires for their cars. Now, at this point, Engleberts weren't as good as Dunlops, let alone the Pirelli Stelvios that many manufacturers use for their race cars... When Ferrari got the D50s in 1955, they tested them at Monza. And they noticed there that the cars were slower than when Lancia ran them. The only thing they really did was to switch the tires from Pirelli to Englebert. The Lancias were known for their traction and handling, qualities that were now compromised by the Engleberts. That, I think is what forced Scuderia Ferrari to modify the Lancias for the next two seasons, trying to make use of what else they could still gain from the design, with the car becoming the Ferrari 801 of 1957... Ferrari's contract with Englebert about the tires lasts until 1958, and they had to pay a fine if they were to terminate their agreement prematurely. So, that forced Ferrari to stick with the Engleberts, which didn't get any better as the years pass (the 1958 246 F1 car is a prime example).

@@Italiansupercarvideo there were only two surviving original cars, one owned by Fiat, and another at Biscaretti museum. That means this car should be a recreation made with original components. All the Lancia D50s we see running at, say, Goodwood Revival or Festival of Speed were recreations. In the 1990s, a group of Lancisti made four recreations of the cars, using several original bits. Now, I don't know if Lord Bamford's car is one of those, as all four recreations made were originally in their 1955 Lancia-run spec, and this car, as we can see, is a 1956 Ferrari-run spec...

I think it's the best sounding F1 from the 2.5L era and of the all-time best. Although Ferrari involutioned some of the innovations of the original Lancia D50s, the 8 pipe exhaust gave an amazing furious sound to an already aggresive-sounding engine as it was in '55. Great video! It captures the Raw and violent music of this beauty!

Ferrari had to remove those features... Thing is, with the original design, the Lancia offers great traction and handling, though it is said that when the tires do lose grip, it is very hard to catch the car. But when Ferrari got the cars, they had to use Englebert tires, in place of the Pirellis Lancia used (they are under contract to use Engleberts until 1958). Engleberts weren't as good as Pirellis, that's certainly one thing they found out... So, with the traction and handling advantages of the original design now compromised by the poor tires, Ferrari had to work around that, and tried to keep the car competitive in other ways...
