Scuderia Ferrari Le Mans History (Prototype Racing)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Video Game Footage: (Includes Real World Footage From KZread)
Game: Assetto Corsa & Forza Motorsport 7
Ferrari first participated in the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans race in 1949. They have a respectable record at Le Mans and won the race nine times outright between 1949 and 1965. Ever since Ferrari hasn't won Le Mans, even with the F333SP, which was non-campaigned by Ferrari themselves but was a beast at winning championships. The GT Ferraris have been consistently successful over the years, winning a number of Le Mans in their class and earning podiums and victories, but Ferrari’s prototypes were stopped by Scuderia Ferrari in 1973 to focus on racing in Formula 1. Now the factory team is back to join LMH prototype racing after 50 years from 2023.

Fun fact: It wasn't a Ferrari factory entry that won overall in 1965, instead it was the 250LM of the N.A.R.T (North American Racing Team). Overall, the '65 Le Mans was one of best races at the venue.

Congrats for this nice video 👏 Le Mans 1966 was a huge defeat for Ferrari against Ford. But very often everybody forget that few months later (January 1967) Ferrari placed 3 cars in the top 3 spots at the 24h of Daytona. In what was considered a sort of home-soil for Ford. Cheers from Monza 🥂 Marco Lazzari [iKR] 🙋🏻‍♂️

Good video. However you made at least one key mistake. Ford did not "instantly" end Ferrari's winning streak. Ford tried and failed twice against that same Ferrari team (1964 and 1965) before their first victory. Also, Ford didn't make sure Ferrari ever won again. Ferrari kept competing and it was Porsche who gets that credit. After 1970, it was clear that beating Porsche would be a tremendous undertaking. Ferrari quit some years after that (1973). Ford had already quit endurance racing.

  • @clutch3615

Porsche doesn't get that credit either. Ferrari simply decided to concentrate only on Formula 1 because it was getting financially too difficult to keep racing in both F1 and prototype racing category. Nothing to do with any other car company.

I think the 333SP was actually an IMSA car and technically not legal for LeMans, just like the Panoz "Batmobile". The ACO allowed the cars to enter but put engine and other restrictions on them that made each uncompetitive against the Porsche, Mercedes, Toyota etc. LeMans prototypes.

You're right, the 333SP was an IMSA prototype sports car. It joined the IMSA series in 1994 and then joined Le Mans in 1995 - 1999. The 333SP was technically legal to race at Le Mans as it competed in the LMP1 class. Therefore it is a Le Mans Prototype.

I was at the 24 hours Daytona in 1996. And it was a dog fight. Between Ferrari and Oldsmobile. And the Oldsmobile will have lost the third year around midnight. And I was standing at turn one. And I could hear the guy rev up the engine in the Oldsmobile. Coming out of the road course and on to the banking and shift the gears from 2nd to 4th.And the battle on the tracks. Between Ford Ferrari and Oldsmobile. Was outstanding. But sadly Oldsmobile with us anymore. Now if Ford builds a hypercar. I was born in 67. So I never got to see them guys race. So it'd be pretty interesting if Ford builds a hypercar.

I saw 333SPs race several times at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. when the IMSA circuit payed its yearly visit. An enduring memory is of encountering a bright red (what else?) example inching through a crowded paddock en route to the pre-grid. At one point, no more than ten or so feet away from ,me, the mechanic then behind the wheel goosed the throttles to clear the engine's throat, if you will , producing a sound that could break glass -- and probably did. Once heard, never forgotten. One of my very fave Ferraris.

They would have beaten Porsche at least a couple of times at the 24 hours of Daytona the 12 hours of Sebring and the 24 hours of LeMans. And without that 3 L engine. We wouldn't have the iconic rally car. The Lancia Stratos. Which won 3 world rally championships 76,77 and 78. And if you follow endurance racing. I would look up the rallying.

Did I miss something? Ferrari said they never raced the 312PB at the 24 hours of Le Mans though it was permitted to race there. Due to having concerns about the F1-based powerplant not lasting 24 hours in testing after research. Update: Okay, so the 312PB did intend 1973, Le Mans with an improved engine but was prone to unreliable, leading to the risk and stress of breaking down. Ironically, it was the only top-class Ferrari in the race to survive the 24 hours and finished 2nd place.

Also, your 1955 LeMams fill footage, showing the Macklin-Levegh accident was visually backwards. You also used footage from the movie "Le Mans" without giving proper ownership credit. So much that Ford tried Ferrari acquisition in 1963, the deal was almost done, but Enzo Ferrari refused when discovered he had not all control over the budget for racing activities. Fiat purchased the 50%, saved the company, got control over road car and Enzo Ferrari had full control over racing activities includong the budget. Uhh, I can argue the 50s - 70s Ferrari prototype cars were LMP back in the day. And yes they have... Ferrari built the F333SP and raced it from 1994-2003. Now they are returning back to Le Mans Prototype racing in 2023. In between that 20-year-hiatus, there were rumors (since 2014 or whenever) that Ferrari would finance an LMP-1 program (back when LMP1 existed) and Ferrari was and still is linked with Formula One. But Ferrari's return to prototype racing seemed unlikely at the time because of its reputation of losing in F1 and because its money couldn't afford to take a beating at Le Mans. That's until 2021 when FIA and ACO announced the new Le Mans Hypercar and LMDh program, Ferrari built the car under LMH regulations.
