1954-56 Lancia D50 F1 GREAT & RAW V8 Sound In Action!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here you are a video of the only Lancia-branded F1 car: the Lancia D50. The car was conceived in 1953 and made its first appearance in late 1954 driven by Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi during the Spanish GP, claiming the pole position with Ascari by a full second from Juan Manuel Fangio’s Mercedes (the car which had qualified first for four of the previous five F1 1994 races).
Why this car was so special? Mainly because of the the excellent study and design made by Vittorio Jano. He was able to create a very compact car with a very low gravity's centre and all weight concentrate between the wheels. This was possible thanks to two expedients: fuel /oil tanks placed between the two wheels and the use of a V-engine (instead of the largely used straight-6/8).
The fuel tank was traditionally placed behind the rear axle. But in this new position it means fuel load was a key factor to effect the handling of the car: following the continuous drop in fuel (caused by consumption in the race), the D50 seemed to enjoy an exceptional stability with full tanks, but was going to decline as they emptied. Without forgetting that they also had an aerodynamic function.
The engine was quite special too. It was a new 2.5L N/A V8 engine, designed and built by Ettore Zaccone Mina, and was able to produce around 250hp and 210 Nm of torque. Thanks to the "V" structure, it took up less space than straight-6/straight-8 engines used by Ferrari and Mercedes and it allows to lower the center of gravity. This V8 was a so called "stressed member engine" which means it was used as an active structural element of the chassis to transmit forces and torques. Lastly it was angled at 12 degrees to allow the driveshaft to pass left of the driver's seat and lowering the seat position for the benefit of aerodynamics.
The car was raced in other 5 races till 1955 (Monaco GP) but after the tragic accident of Alberto Ascari during a Ferrari test at Monza Circuit Lancia announced the definitive suspension of the F1 activity also caused by Lancia's financial crisis.
But the D50 continue to race untill 1956 under the Ferrari brand. In fact an agreement was signed between Fiat, Ferrari and Lancia according to which Lancia gave Ferrari six D50s, two bodies, some mechanical components and numerous spare parts for free. Ferrari also received a contribution of 50 million a year for five years from Fiat in order to race and manage the F1 activity. This single-seater, recalled Lancia-Ferrari D50 or Ferrari D50, was conveniently revised by the Emilian technicians and it allowed Juan Manuel Fangio to win the 1956 World Championship.
In this video you can enjoy the lovely and raw V8 melody of a few of them I recorded at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed and the 2015 Salone dell'Auto Parco Valentino in Turin.
The two full red ones are probabily the same car and "genuine" Lancia D50. The second one with the green front, should be a Ferrari D50.

    The car with the Italian Police escort is, I believe, one of two (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) surviving original Lancia D50. When the team got sold to Ferrari at the later part of 1955 season, Gianni Lancia kept two (?) cars, the rest went to Ferrari. The other cars in the video (the #14 and 17) were recreations built around many original components by a group of Italian Lancia enthusiasts from what I've read. The team managed to find original D50 engines in Italy (one of the engines they bought is still in its original delivery crate, with dyno tags!), and also a number of original D50 transaxles. They also have several original blueprints which helped them in recreating the cars. Hell, the constructor even has the contract of Alberto Ascari with Lancia as its works driver!

    Hey Mick! Yep those "unseen" scenes are from the first edition of the Parco Valentino motor show in Turin in 2015 and that parade lap was a sort of Lancia D50's celebration. Believe or not but that car actually raced around those streets for the Gran Premio del Valentino. The race was held for 10 official times in alternate years and it was a non-valid race for the F1 championship (especially the 1952 and 1954 editions, since before 1950 the so called "F1 championship" didn't exist yet) but still an extra F1 event with the presence of famous drivers. The 1955 edition was won by Alberto Ascari with this Lancia D50. In any case those things simply sounds mental, love them. Thank you so much for the comment my friend! Wish you a lovely Sunday ;)

The car being demonstrated is an original example, owned by Lancia themselves, the other cars in the video (the one with the green nosecone and the one with race no 17) were all rebuilt from many available original bits, apparently.

  • @identiticrisis

    @identiticrisis

    6 жыл бұрын

    Cross-plane. Back then they thought its better balance would result in a smoother running engine; once engine speeds rose, crank torsion became an issue and the flat-plane was actually smoother. On one of the featured cars (the "Ferrari") you can also see evidence for the other drawback, namely in the individual exhaust pipes per cylinder. Flat-planes are a lot simpler to package and tune the exhaust for performance. Both Coventry Climax and BRM subsequently went through this same process in the early '60s.

    This car was designed by Lancia and was well ahead of the competition. It is one of the great innovative Grand Prix cars with the fuel equally distributed in its panniers situated within the wheel base, which design also aided better aerodynamics. Unfortunately Lancia went bust before the car was fully developed (tyre design in particular was also a significant problem). Because it was the fasted car on the grid, the Italian Government insisted that it should be raced, and it was transferred to Ferrari together with Lancia's leading engineers/designers. FIAT provided Ferrari with the finance to race it, and the following year it won the world championship for Ferrari (not Lancia). Ferrari did not want to develop the car since it was not a Ferrari, and did not like running something better than a 'real' Ferrari, so it concentrated on creating a new vehicle. As a consequence the D50 never reached its full potential.

  • @jcgabriel1569

    @jcgabriel1569

    Жыл бұрын

    @@richardverney6702 no, they did develop the car the best they can, but the thing is, the regulations would ban alcohol-based fuel in 1958 in favour of Avgas, which proceeded to adversely affect all the engines that used to have alcohol fuels. This caused Ferrari to develop their F2 car, the 156 Dino, and give it a bigger engine, from 1.5 to 2.5L l, because the F2 class didn't use alcohol fuel anyway...
