I play baseball and basketball, and it’s one thing to shoot a 3 pointer when you’re up 20 with 20 seconds left in the game, when there’s no shot of a comeback. But in baseball, you could theoretically be down 20-0 going into the bottom of the 9th and end up that. Which is why this is one of the stupidest unwritten rules in all of sports

I understand not swinging on a 3-0 count but if the bases are loaded and you’re up you can do whatever you want. How I was thought you’re not supposed to swing because they’re probably gonna walk you anyway and if they don’t you usually swing in the second one depending on how the pitcher has been performing all game

People are missing the point. The reason the rule exists is to increase odds of finishing the game. Baseball is very imbalance at the extremes. Because there is no clock, other team can just take a fan out of stands to pitch when a score differential gets high. They have no incentive to waste arm of a pro pitcher at this point.

I was in Dodger Stadium the night his dad hit two grand slams in one inning. Not sure if he's the only one ever to do that.

There is a difference between not stealing a base, or hit and running, and giving yourself up in an at bat. 5 hits is the difference between 9-10 batting average points. and the HR and RBI also will help come contract time. Should he have taken a 3-0/ well, only to the extent that players used to always take 3-0 pitches. But now, even light hitting hitters swing away.

He apologized for "breaking unwritten rules" and then stole third when they were up 6-0 earlier today. Legendary.

Amen! The biggest thing I hate is when a team jumps out to a big early lead and then just quit for the rest of the game wanting it to get over. Last week, I saw the Pirates jump out to a 7 run lead and then they didn’t even get three hits after that.

I've never heard of this at 47 years old, playing and watching baseball since I was a kid.

Let us write this unwritten rule: "players must deliberately underperform under threat of violence from the pitcher. Players who fail to comply may be subject to bodily harm". The only reason the rule is unwritten is because writing it lays barren the idiocy and moral failing being upheld.

The object of baseball is to score the most runs and win the game. F*ck any "unwritten rules" that suggest otherwise. These "unwritten rules" are exactly why so many people consider baseball to be a snowflake sport. In the words of every baseball player/coach who ever existed, "that's horseshit!" Props, Tatis. This is PRO baseball. You NEVER let up. If you don’t like it because you’re losing…..play better!!!!!!!!!!

Asking players to take a stat hit to help out the pitchers stats is kind of pathetic. Players get their money from their statistics, asking them to dial it back is stupid. If your team is so demoralized and finished there is the option to give up and forfeit the game.

MLB more upset about a star player breaking an “unwritten rule” than a full team breaking actual rules...clown activity

Track runners dont slow down when they're demolishing the field. They sprint through the finish line. It's an absolute shame that players and the manager publicly reprimanded him for it. If it goes against team policy, talk with him behind closed doors. What an embarrasment. And let's call a beanball what it is: assault. What a pathetic move by Texas.

It is always amazing to me how baseball players insist on consistently displaying that they are the softest athletes in sports.

I agree 1000%. I hate when the same thing happens in the NBA. They get mad if they are getting blown out and you score. If you don't want the other team scoring, play defense🤷‍♂️

It’s the opposing teams job to use whatever they can psychology, guilt or plain talent during the game. But to have your own coach and fellow teammates to throw you under the bus. That’s disgraceful. If they don’t like it IDGAF. Go coach or play in a league were participation trophies are handed out.

So baseball doesn't have enough arbitrary rules. Now they have unwritten rules to make it "more fair". Good god.

In short the MLB is NOT winning any fans with this kind of BS

They need new fans, and this bullshit just makes me sad considering this kid is one of the MOST entertaining players to watch in the game right now and they yell at him for swinging "too hot" of a bat. All I can think about in this situation is nobody would care if he swung at a 3-0 count and grounded out. So the only reason anybody is mad is because he is good, end of story

They are mad because he did not even bother to look at his coach for the sign. If he gets the green light to swing 3-0, this is a non-issue. But I would bet the bank they gave him the take sign. Tatis is good before the at bat, good after the at bat. Hosmer and the coach were upset because he did not review the sign.

I hate these “unwritten rules” because they give out awards at the end of the year to the guy who has the best stats, so I’m supposed to put on then brakes even though the losing team will not quit trying to come back!!! Any pitcher who ever throws at you should get a bat thrown back or swung back right at ’em!

I'm glad to see most people agree it's a stupid "unwritten rule". I also think it's even more ridiculous considering the fact that he was about to tie or beat a record. So you're telling me to just NOT go for that personal achievement because it might hurt the pitcher's feelings?

This unwritten rule doesn't make sense in baseball, since technically you can score 100+ runs in an inning because there's no time limit. So you have every reason to pile it on because they can score unlimited runs in the last inning.

"Wah, wah, wah. Mommy, he hit a grand slam off me. It's not fair." Just play the game. Good for him. Do not apologize for being good.

They goddam better be trying to run up the score. As a 12 year old I watched the game where the Phil’s were playing the Cubs and barely won a 24-23 game.

that unwritten rule actually sucks, I’ve seen teams comeback from a 10 run deficit to win a game in the 9th, by the way, WGAF, the manager should talk to his pitchers for being terrible at pitching and NOT to get mad at the other team

Imo the rule only applies when your up by 7 or more runs, past the 6th inning.

When it comes time to renegotiate either the batter or pitchers contract, that is xtra walk, home run, base hit etc adds up and can be the difference of the paying out big money or not (certain benchmarks a pitcher or hitter needs to have to command a certain price) so this “unwritten rule” should be no more and may the best mad win the exchange nmw what the score is !!!

The fact that he was forced to apologize, after HIS team ousted him, is disgusting. Respect = not giving pity, swing at the ball because that’s the game!
