    Historic comebacks in the MLB happen all the time. The Mariners trailed Toronto 8-1 after 5 innings in the playoffs but came back to win. And look at game 6, Mets-Boston in 1986. Play until the final out, never let up. Don't apologize because the other team is inept.

    I play baseball and basketball, and it’s one thing to shoot a 3 pointer when you’re up 20 with 20 seconds left in the game, when there’s no shot of a comeback. But in baseball, you could theoretically be down 20-0 going into the bottom of the 9th and end up that. Which is why this is one of the stupidest unwritten rules in all of sports

    Unwritten rules to protect a pitcher's feelings: - Don't steal when leading big - Don't swing at 1st pitch after b2b homeruns - Don't swing at 3-0 when leading big - Don't bunt to break up a no-hitter - Don't talk about a no-hitter in progress - Don't step on pitchers mound when entering / leaving the field - Throwing at a batter in retaliation is ok when a team breaks these rules Unwritten rules that help batters: - Nothing. Not one damn thing. So yeah, to hell with pitchers.

    @@khamjaninja. I think if someone strikes a pitcher with clear intent then that batter should get an automatic home run rather than a walk to first. I think teams would start cracking down on baby pitchers if it started costing them a ton of runs because that pitcher just let two or three people get home because of their ego.

    I understand not swinging on a 3-0 count but if the bases are loaded and you’re up you can do whatever you want. How I was thought you’re not supposed to swing because they’re probably gonna walk you anyway and if they don’t you usually swing in the second one depending on how the pitcher has been performing all game

    People are missing the point. The reason the rule exists is to increase odds of finishing the game. Baseball is very imbalance at the extremes. Because there is no clock, other team can just take a fan out of stands to pitch when a score differential gets high. They have no incentive to waste arm of a pro pitcher at this point.

    There is a difference between not stealing a base, or hit and running, and giving yourself up in an at bat. 5 hits is the difference between 9-10 batting average points. and the HR and RBI also will help come contract time. Should he have taken a 3-0/ well, only to the extent that players used to always take 3-0 pitches. But now, even light hitting hitters swing away.

    Amen! The biggest thing I hate is when a team jumps out to a big early lead and then just quit for the rest of the game wanting it to get over. Last week, I saw the Pirates jump out to a 7 run lead and then they didn’t even get three hits after that.

    As a Padres fan I cant respect him after that. Be upset if he missed a sign yeah, but talk to him in the dugout, not through the media. Then he adds "we're not trying to run up the score"... like what?? Should everyone bunt out? Has Tingler been asleep when our BP has been blowing leads all season? He was totally kissing ass for his former team. Tinglers a clown for how he handled this whole situation

    I'm glad to see most people agree it's a stupid "unwritten rule". I also think it's even more ridiculous considering the fact that he was about to tie or beat a record. So you're telling me to just NOT go for that personal achievement because it might hurt the pitcher's feelings?

    This unwritten rule doesn't make sense in baseball, since technically you can score 100+ runs in an inning because there's no time limit. So you have every reason to pile it on because they can score unlimited runs in the last inning.

    that unwritten rule actually sucks, I’ve seen teams comeback from a 10 run deficit to win a game in the 9th, by the way, WGAF, the manager should talk to his pitchers for being terrible at pitching and NOT to get mad at the other team

    Imo the rule only applies when your up by 7 or more runs, past the 6th inning.

    When it comes time to renegotiate either the batter or pitchers contract, that is xtra walk, home run, base hit etc adds up and can be the difference of the paying out big money or not (certain benchmarks a pitcher or hitter needs to have to command a certain price) so this “unwritten rule” should be no more and may the best mad win the exchange nmw what the score is !!!

    Screw unwritten rules. His job is to hit the baseball. He did his job. Why didn't the Rangers manager pull the pitcher? He was clearly struggling. Pitcher threw a tater and paid for it.
