Well said, Andy. There's a world of difference between being able to learn pieces from sheet music and being able to actually 'play the piano'. I'm certain that most people want to do the latter. Traditional piano lessons seem more geared to producing concert pianists and many people are disheartened because of it.

This is an amazing video Andy, I’ve been learning piano for about a year now from video from yourself and others on KZread, I was playing on a public piano the other day and an older lady came over and started talking about pieces and such I explained that I I don’t read music, she was shocked and impressed that I understood scales and chord theory and could also pick tunes out by ear (to an extent) she explained that she has played piano since she was a child but without sheet music wouldn’t have a clue with how to play which blew my mind, she had some sheet music in her bag and played yesterday by the Beatles as I explained they are my fav band it was very cool experience but she explained again that if I took that away from her she would struggle, sorry for the long story haha keep up the amazing work mate !

Personally i have been learning songs from bands i like which i find one of the best ways to learn as it fun and you learn more than you realise, Here are some of my fav channels - Marc González, MikesMusic123, pianojohn113, The Beatles Vocal Harmony, Steve Lungrin, drawboy6x3, Shawn Cheek, Aimee Nolte Music and of course Andy's videos, alot of what these channels teach will reflect my music taste ie 60's/70's soft rock and prog such as the Beatles and Supertramp, but i hope you gain something from these fantastic channels and also continue to develop watching Andy!

I feel you. I started playing when I was 4yo, sight reading only. I quit when I was 14 ish because apart from getting scolded by my grandma and then twice a weak by my teacher I felt like I made no progress. I went through sheets and sheets, performed here and there with the music school I attended. But when I didn't have notes I didn't know what tf to do with the piano. But the sheet music was always associated with negative memories back then. So I quit. Now 10 years later I try the other way of getting at it. And I'm motivated like never before. I sometimes have to stop myself from playing too long. I am also old enough to have my own taste of music so I know what I want to play or what I want to sound like. And it is so much fun mixing the music theory with some improvising. I'm by no mean a good pianist, yet. Will most likely never be the next lang lang, but I definitely enjoy myself playing. I progress and am very proud of what I can achieve. It's therapeutic to just play..

Just started following you and working through your videos.. Learnt piano as a child, but quit at 15 and have always regretted it. Starting up again, now at 49! Really love your simple, easy to follow approach!

So true what you say about people giving up music after their teens. I learned to read music by playing brass instruments at high school, but was lucky that my brass teacher was a real jazz enthusiast who encouraged me to just play, with or without music and to play as many instruments as I could lay my hands on. Fast forward 25 years and I'm trying to relearn piano and guitar. My progress is slow (I don't manage to practice enough) but not having to rely on the ability to read music has been refreshing. If you are reading this and don't read music and thinking this is a hindrance, listen to what Andy says and be encouraged to keep on going. And Andy, please keep on doing these videos. I find them the best of all I have looked at on the internet for a 2nd time beginner like me.

Thank you Andy. This was timely and helpful. I've been learning, with a teacher, for about 3 months and am learning to sight read in the usual way. Learning scales was part of the process, but I've learned what I know from KZread videos and a lot of practice. I know 12 scales, fluently, inside out, their broken chords etc, even hands together, but.............I've not been able to play much. My lessons stopped over the holiday break and I decided to learn some fun things, chord progressions and Hey Jude. It has been a lot of fun. My lessons are supposed to start again next week and I'm wondering whether to quit them and just keep learning the stuff that appeals to me. Still not decided, but a lot to think about.

@@AndyPiano Hi Andy, thanks for your answer! A structured beginner course like your guitar course would be very helpful. Beginning an instrument is a very daunting experience and hard to tell how to shape the pad. Your guitar course helped me because was able to work my way through step by step and gradually get better. For piano f.e.it could be first a level with beginner chords and beginner songs. After that a level with scales and songs. 3rd level with 2 hand coordination,.. and so on. Anyhow, great thanks for all your work here. Love you guitar channel and fantastic you are trying to do the same with piano.

Beginner

Without technology, many would not be able to play and would have to rely on private lessons (or books) with sheet music. So, luckily for technology. Even still, there are other reasons one's interest might wane. Especially when you build up a library of songs/pieces, having to play them regularly - on days you may not feel like it - to keep them in your head, can be an issue. Having it written down, lyrics and all, with detailed notes that I can understand is what I've been doing lately & will do from now on to make it easier. Knowing how to read sheet music would help in such a case.. I also have to be more discriminatory in what I choose to learn so I don't waste time and end up sounding like a hyena as I sing to an accompaniment I learned.

There's just absolutely no where to learn the piano, i can not pay for lessons so trying to find something free is way too much of a puzzle. I'm way too much of a fucking burden to my family, i can't be a disappointment anymore, But how? And where? I don't know.

Knocked it on the head for me Andy. Now at 40 trying to learn to play without sheet music is taking far more work than the thousands of dollars of lessons as a kid 🙄

I know the feeling. Why do I persevere..and thinking about taking up guitar too. Oh no lol. Don't want to have wasted my time learning nor to forget what I learnt... I still like piano but don't feel like playing it all the time. I find guitar is harder.
