How to Avoid Giving Up on Learning How to Play Piano

Музыка

Want to keep on your journey to learn how to play piano for your entire life? Whether you are a very beginner or you have been playing for while already, this lesson will help you develop strategies to make sure you are learning to play piano for a long time to come. Some of the main reasons people give up on playing the piano is that it turns out to be more work than they thought, they took bad advice which hurt them in the long term, or they just get frustrated working on the same things all the time. The key to being successful playing the piano is to balance between commitment and enjoying yourself. I also want to tell you that when I first started out, I had a lot of trouble. I found it hard to muster up the motivation to practice, but I stuck with it and here we are today!

Its been SO helpful to hear this and Ive found your music theory video's really useful. Im 8 months into starting the piano keyboard aged 60 , and have often felt like giving up in frustration. For everything I learn there is soooo much more , and my fingers and brain conspire against me !! But Im sticking at it by learning short simple tunes that leave me feeling proud and inspire me to continue. Also inspired as some family members bet Id give up within a few months and determined to prove them wrong. You have been a great help, and 15 mins a day is achievable most days. Thanks Robin. R

Subscribed :) i had piano lessons when i was a kid but it was only for a short time. My family had fallen to some hard times financially and i had to stop since we cant afford the lessons anymore. i'm also guilty of some of the things you mentioned here. Without a teacher, there was no one to guide me and i failed to practice what i knew. I also tried to learn new songs but i got frustrated because i cant seem to get it right. As i got older i didn't have the time to learn because of school and later on because of work. I want to continue learning how to play again. I'm even planning to get a new piano because the one that i have is about to give up on me. i've watched a couple of your videos and i like the way you teach. thanks for sharing what you know.

Been playing the classical guitar for years, always wanted to get in to music theory, mostly to understand and help me with composing. I recently got myself a midi keyboard to help me compose music on my computer, and found myself enjoying playing around with it alot, decided to finally learn music theory properly and having alot of fun following your videos, which are great! So just wanted to say thank you ! :)

Enjoying and appreciating your videos. I look at it as a thousand small advances. I also believe once the dexterity comes, the learning will come faster. Remembering scores - that's another thing. On your advice, I got the Alfred's Adult book, and it turned out the instructor I got (I started with him in addition to the lessons I bought from your lessons part of the site) uses that one. He is very carefully starting me thru it. Only on page 16/17 after 8 lessons but he is keeping me from developing any bad habits. My biggest problem is fly-away "finger 5"s, which makes me slow down playing anything. Great advice on "brushing your teeth." Also, digital pianos with headphones are great, keep the piano in a convenient place so you can get those 15 minutes in thru the day. Just sharing my 2cents, as a very adult-stage learner. You have to set your goals well, be reasonable, but motivated.

What saddens me the most.....is people who are really serious about piano playing and go out and purchase a quality piano.....and then they begin to hit a brick wall.....like taking on harder pieces beyond their level, or coming across an ordinary teacher, or not getting enough encouragement......and then they give up! Only to leave their well paid piano to someone else who’s only prepared to pay 3/4 or half of the price you paid for it yourself. Certainly finding a great passionate teacher will help you avoid these great disappointments.

A lot of good tips. In the past a lot of parents get their kids into music lessons. They are not exactly sure what it is all about. It's only when you get older that you know Mozart Sonata, Beethoven Moonlight Sonata or Fur Elise. In the beginning anything is a challenge. Know a retired person who is so odd he doesn't fit many of the common assumptions about learning. For someone who suffers from stress, he has personal issues to deal with. He has a repertoire of about 5 pieces at most. Most days he would just be playing the 1 piece he liked many years ago. Not an easy piece and he would learn by watching finger sequences from a pro pianist. For a retired person to spend a few minutes learning to read notations should not be a big deal. Every time the subject comes up sounds like he has some kind of "phobia". For someone who can play a 7m piece from memory can't use the finger sequences to decipher symbols on a page is mind-boggling.And then the issue of doing simpler pieces or pieces by other composers he is against the idea. Learning music theory and history of various composers are out as well.

A lot of good tips. Know someone who got back into playing piano a year ago. He took lessons in his childhood but got back into playing in a totally "unconventional" way. First he doesn't play scales or exercises or just any song because it looks easy / difficult. He would only play a few pieces he heard his father (who was a pianist when he was alive) play. He basically learn with the videos he finds on the Internet and imitating people's hand sequences. Unlike the rest of us who would learn with sheet music first, he would tackle a few pieces others find difficult to master by completely avoiding notations (with the excuse that music notation is a foreign language that is impossible to master). Being retired for a while he has a lot of free time but doesn't play piano as much as he can possibly. He doesn't get into play any piece for the sake of learning. 6 months later you would hear him work on the just about the same pieces he worked on 6 months ago because they reminded him of his father whom he has fond memories of...

Yeah, there is a huge group of people out there who memorize a couple of songs using synthesia videos. If you want to learn just a few songs and not really learn the piano, it is fine. It is really cool that he got into playing because of his father though.

  • @thepianoplayer416

For many of us including myself who took music lessons take for granted that playing music involve certain amount of sight-reading so learning notations is part of the deal. Yet there are people who would learn songs painstakingly by imitating other pianists' hand positions but make no effort to learn to read music. On the other hand, the same person can play the few songs on piano in a music store sufficiently well that other people around would think he is a professional pianist... yet he can't read music. This man's father had a degree in music and could read music so it's puzzling why the son doesn't learn to read. Not that he has no ability but has chosen not to learn. Also there is no effort to learn about music history, the genre of music he is playing, the biographies of composers and "other" pieces from the same composers of the pieces he is playing. I've come across a few people who claimed to be able to read music at a social gathering but yet unable to turn what is on paper into nice sounding melodies. Once came across several kids at a party sitting in front of a keyboard. For a few hours in the afternoon they were trying to decipher a piece of music on paper (no exaggeration). Looked like the piece wasn't too complicated and only got 1 page. Thanks for the reply...

I have played lots of difficult pieces, it becomes boring overtime when you can't learn anything new now. It takes a lot of time to try and master something that is harder than your previous hardest piece ever played. Which makes me just yawn every time I play the piano, I seem to can't find any progressions right now, I feel lazy all the time.

Is there a correct way to practice? Instruments just make sense to me, and adding-in all the terminology and technicalities to them seems to make my progress slower if anything. I've been playing guitar for 13 years and I never once looked at tabs or sheet music. Only recently started playing the piano about 3 weeks ago and my hands are already independent and it is *extremely* fun.
