Your comparison with chemistry is flawed. Chemistry and other basic sciences and mathematics courses teach critical thinking and are the core fundamentals that form the basis of many professions. Even adjacent professions like business and investing require such knowledge or analytical ability provided by those subjects or analysis of businesses/products that involve such knowledge. Science and math is also the foundation of the world itself so learning those subjects allow people to understand the world we live in. That leads to applicable life skills/knowledge such as why water alone cannot clean an oily pan or why more A/C cooling is needed on upper floors of a house than the lower floors or how to do fractional accounting for taxes. Music has no such similar degree of influence or practical life impact. As such, there’s no strict requirement for music by most, if not all, educational boards - just a general arts requirement for breadth of experience. So yes, just because something is hard or not one’s core interest doesn’t mean it should not be learned, but that’s not justification for forcing piano or other music classes onto children. Lastly, be aware that when your children are young you may have the power to force piano lessons or whatever lessons onto them. But be prepared if that leads to lasting resentment which those children may hold over you into your children’s adulthood and what long lasting relational impact that may have.
