Federal .22 LR Bird & Snake Shotshell - Is It Really Effective? 3-Gun Shooting Review

Are Federal Small Game Bird Shot rimfire cartridges really effective beyond five or six feet? Not really. Watch as I shoot this ammo through two revolvers and a lever action rifle.

The crimped ones have been around loooong before the capped ones. I prefer the capped ones in an automatic pistol because they actually feed, whereas the crimped ones will not.

Another excellent video. I had a rat problem in my garage back in the early 2000's when they discovered the dog food stored there. I found the crimped .22LR shot rounds seemed to pack more of a punch than CCI capsule type rounds. I want to say I was using Winchester crimped shot, but it was long ago. I was considering stepping up to a smoothbore designed specifically for .22WMR shotshells (Marlin Model 25MG) but I suppose the rats got the gist and stopped invading my garage. Even with rifling, which spreads those patterns like crazy, those crimped .22LR shotshell did the trick if within 15 feet.

Used Heritage single action 6.5” barrel; Winchester lever action 20” barrel; and Ruger 10/22 16” (take down), all at 7 yards. By far best result was with the 10/22 using Federal. Did not cycle (didn’t expect it to) and shot was concentrated in 3” group! Best I could get out of (more expensive) CCI isn’t even worth mentioning.

It turned out to be a N.I.B. Marlington first year production 1894 .45 long colt , 11+ years old made 2011-2012 , I've always had the .44 magnum , the .45-70 , and a couple of years ago the 1894 in .22 magnum , this is my first .45 long colt , I'll let you know how it shoots soon . 100 degrees here yesterday and today , keep your powder dry out there ..

But now, I've got one of those Bond Arms derringers that shoots either .45 Colt or 410 shotgun. I found some .45 shot shells at a gun show, and I've got some various .410 shells. I did a review on CCI .45 ACP shotshells and I got better patterns out of my Bond Arms derringer with a 2" barrel than I did with a 5" 1911 pistol. Rifling in a barrel will indeed have a big impact on lead pellet patterns. A short barrel is definitely an advantage when using shotshells.

Not sure if anyone else makes one, but Henry actually makes a smoothbore version of their H001 rifle for this very application. It's sold as the Henry Garden Gun. I'd find it a bit pricey for something that is only useful with shotshells (it reportedly shoots regularly ammunition horribly), but there may be some demand among farmers and ranchers.

You're right, the Henry Garden Gun is pricey with a retail price of about $500. On top of that a 50-round box of Federal .22 bird shot costs more than a box of some 9mm ammo. I just can't see a big demand for the Garden Gun.

Speaking of shotshells.... I'd love if you'd pick up one of DoubleTap's Snake shot options and test it out. They run a lightweight wadcutter (full caliber) behind a load of shot, capped by a foil. The result seems to be greatly diminished spreading (typical problem with rifled bores) and the backup of a lightweight wadcutter for being more effective on small game.

I remember grabbing a few boxes of these shells in the crimped shells. When I was a young man and my father at the time would grab a box, hand it to me with his ruger bear cat which I still have btw . And send me to the barn and tell me to whittle down the rats and snakes. "Aaaand feed the cows while I'm there." 😂 I also remember finding a large cotton mouth in the barn one time and I nailed it 3 times on the head from point blank range of about a foot and a half with this shot.. 😮 It bounced off it. 😂 Good thing I always had standard rounds and at the time there seemed to be a surplus and popularity of the long rounds, not long rifle. But longs. I also inherited my father's boy hood hand me down to him, of his Winchester HC 62 A pump. 22 so old it had a browning, instead of a bluing. Still have it too, it accommodates short, long, and long rifle. Many many rabbits and squirrels on that rifle. My very first .22 rifle was a colt stagecoach. Can't find them anymore. I've looked for about 10 years and they just aren't out there. Went through a stupid stage and traded it for something ridiculous. A Honda trail 90.. Underage beer and a whole Lotta stupid went in that trade.. 😂 Happy Father's Day men!

For 22 shotshells, the Federal old-style crimped shotshells are a much better value for the money, than the CCI variety - a box of 50 Federal shells, versus a little tray of 10 or 20 CCI shells. Where people run into trouble with the CCI shotshells, is when they try running them through a semiauto pistol, the most notorious being 9 mm Glocks - those shells just don't have enough "oomph" to properly cycle some semiauto pistols - they end up with a misfeed, that little plastic bubble gets broken, and you end up with lead shot dumped all inside your pistol. For doing work on our property during that time of the year when snakes and other critters are active, I'll carry my grandfather's old High Standard 9 shot 22 revolver, loaded with Federal shotshells. I've practiced with it, and know how far away I can be to get an effective pattern and where to aim. And depending on the circumstances, less chance of "collateral property damage" with those 22 shotshells, than with the CCI shotshells I have for my Glock 40 S&W.

Nice video; it was fun to watch!.... I was thinking you might prove what I too experience with .22 'shot-shells'; to me, they're nearly worthless (except for taking out dinosaurs! ☺).... I have the plastic-dome CCI's and the Federal's that you used here. I bought them to shoot mice; if I got close enough to hit one, I think the mouse would run off laughing his butt off! The last box/card of CCI's I bought were $12.00 for 20 rounds. I DO mean my Last box! I've shot them out of a revolver and a 1963 Savage single-shot bolt action rifle (my first non-BB- gun, gun that I got when I was 10; still works, and looks, like new).

One of the most useful tools I have is an old 2'' H&R revolver using these cartridges. Both Federal and Winchester make them and work equally well. I use them to kill rodents (mice most of the time) after they are trapped in a cage trap. They are more humane than drowning and do not damage the trap much and versatile as the revolver can be used in tight places with no danger of the shot traveling and harming people and it can be carried in my back pocket for use at a moments notice. Revolvers are best for this cartridge because the forward part of the cartridge is actually where a bullet would be but it stays in place and makes cycling pretty iffy in repeating actions that rely on feeding from a magazine. This ammo is generally difficult to find and the last that I bought was $16 a box of 50.

Thanks for that review and tips. Also still in love with that custom job on the Sig. Stay cool! All the best. "The JJ" SW Penna.

Ever tried DoubleTap Snake Shot loads? They seem to produce vastly improved tighter patterns at range, also have a lightweight wadcutter behind the shot.

@@mixup98 You've very welcome! There's so little video data I could find on this product but the one I did, showed very good shot patterns at reasonable range, compared to anything I've seen from CCI.

Didn't know they made a crimp type. The plastic caps jam up in my 2 inch revolvers unless I put a little dot or two of super glue on the crimps. I use the 38 specials.

uou might like the henry garden gun. it is a smooth bore 22lr designed to shoot these rounds. it keeps a tighter pattern in the smooth bore because rifling spins the shot causing it to spread out.

Good video. Federal 22 shotshell is tough on the dinosaurs. Winchester, Federal and Cascade International all make crimped 22 LR shotshell, although hard to find. CCI of course makes the shotshell with the plastic capsule. 22 Magnum shotshell has much more punch. Savage smooth bore 22 extends the maximum effective range from six feet to 15 feet. Well done.

An H&R Trapper revolver was the first pistol I ever shot. It was reliable, inexpensive, and would shoot any kind of .22 cartridge made. Unfortunately, it burned up in a fire.

H&R made inexpensive but quality firearms and I love their old .22 double action revolvers. I also own an H&R Model 922 with an octagon barrel that is almost 100 years old! Here is my video on my 922: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d46Dt9OHf9GspbA.html

happened upon this, opening made me giggle.... sorta glad I wasn't drinking coffee still. We used to carry .22 shot for snakes. Wasn't super effective unless you were pretty close. Used an old Native trick that Dad taught us, that apparently began with natives, snakes, and bow and arrows. They tend to follow whatever is closest when provoked, and keep their head locked onto it, be it barrel end, or end of arrow being slowly circled. Pop 'em right the first time that way. Even tho damn things wiggle and squirm and try to strike after they're long dead. Always weirded me out. Family ranch was sage brush, scab rock, and rattlers.

It packs more punch than CCI shot. Carry it when frog gigging. East Texas has water moccasins. Took 3 CCI shot to stop it. One shot with Winchester shot. Even found a box of 45 ACP shot shells that looked like fmj. Worked great in my 1911 but never could find anymore.

I have used both the crimped end shells as well as the cap shells from CCI. I've used both in an H&R model 929 pistol as well as a Winchester Model 67 Bolt action. I find that in the bolt action rifle the crimped end will get stuck while trying to eject the shell casing but I've noticed in the 929 that none of the shells will get stuck in the chambers of the cylinder. I use the model 929 while mowing while I'm working outside.

I have a Browning .22 Lever action. I used the blue capped rat shot and could never hit a thing. Checking on target paper reveled that the pellets went circular around the bulls eye. Switching to a crimped .22 rat shot fixed the problem. I don't shot blue caps any more in my Browning .22. Also in order to feed the lever had to be firmly pushed open for the next shell to get into position to feed into the chamber.
