@22plinker These were invented in 1971 by Lawerence Fererro (my father) ...he developed them for snakes while fishing to fire from a .38 cal pistol with an 1- 7/8 barrel using a .357 case a cardboard wad filled the remaining case with no. 9 shot another cardboard slightly crimped and covered with a drop of wax. He later found pill capsules from a veterinarian that worked. also being a mold-maker he developed the cases you now use. he submitted his idea to Speer who bought it for i believe $ 1200 after rejecting an offer of a royalty of .5 cents per shell sold.... boy has he regretted that... lol

They were for snakes, I remember in the early 80s and late 70s, they were only seen for . 22 and .38 and had a viper on the box. I've shot a many snakes growing up in Louisiana!

Great idea & one of my favorite types of ammo. Always called them snake loads because they were far superior to anything else for that purpose. They greatly improved my success rate when they first came out. Unfortunately for the snakes. 👍

The reason the smaller the barrel makes the shot more accurate is because shooting birdshot/buckshot out of a rifled barrel causes the spread to be larger because the spin the rifling puts on the shot, this is why most shotguns have smooth bore barrels. So the shorter the barrel, the less spin it can put on the shot, the more accurate it becomes.

Excellent video! It's rare to actually come across shooting related videos that actually answers a question I had. I've always wondered what kind of patterns those types of cartridges would make at different distances and you covered it. Thanks!

  • @danielallison3540

The reason for the better pattern with the increasingly shorter barrel is the lack of rifling. Rifling is great for stabilizing a bullet or slug because of the centrifugal force it creates. However, with any shot, the centrifugal force causes the shot to scatter outwardly as soon as it leaves the barrel.

Back in 1980 when I began reloading, I was buying the CCI shot capsules and loading my own shot cartridges for .38 Special and .44 Special. I experimented a little and found that number 6 shot worked best for me. It gave decent penetration and pattern density. Good enough for soda cans tossed into the air. Shot cartridges in handguns have never been good for much, but they are fun to shoot.

i think the COP did best because when you shoot shot out of a rifled barrel the pattern spins and gets wider so the shorter barrel spun the shot less which caused a narrower pattern.

Some observations based on my experiences... and lots of reading! The rate of spin of the bullet/shot capsule is a function of the rate of twist of the rifling not barrel length. For example, a rate of twist of 1:18 would result in the bullet rotating once in 18" of travel regardless of whether the barrel was 2.5" long or 24" long. It would be interesting to know the rate of twist for the three guns... but I suspect they are not significantly different. In the the case of the COP, if it is anything like the one I have, the rifling is so shallow and the bore so loose that it doesn't stabilize jacketed bullets--keyholing on targets is the norm. It is possible the COP is barely breaking up the capsule and is not spinning the capsule as fast as the rifling would suggest, i.e., the capsule is stripping through the rifling. Bullets recovered from the COP I have show that jacketed bullets were not fully engaged by the rifling and the faint grooves left in the bullet were smeared. Velocity is probably the biggest variable here. The velocity out of the COP is likely significantly slower than that of the 6" revolver or rifle. As such even if the rate of twist was the same for all the guns the rotational velocity (a function of rate of twist and projectile velocity) for the shorter barrelled gun would be slower and thus would not disperse the shot as quickly via centrifugal force. For more on the theories see a quick summary I Googled up at www.schuemann.com/Portals/0/Documentation/Webfile_Barrel%20Twist%20Rate.pdf

The shorter barrel is more accurate with shot. The shot is pushed from the shell and gradually spreads in travel. The longer the barrel; the more of the shot ricochet's off of the barrel leaving the muzzle at various angels. If there were no barrel the shot would push forward with minimum spread right from the shell.

My grandpa used to load his 38 special with bird shot for critters that maybe trying to get at the feed stock and fowl... like, chickens, eggs and ducks and hogs too, and any would be trespassers back on the farm in the early 70's. It reminds me of foghorn Leghorn. lol He also had a special something called salt shot. Now, I never seen any of those rounds in action, but he proclaimed it to be the best hippy potion on the hill. Old pappy didn't play games when it came to his hill farm spread. Including the vegetable garden. The good old days. great times, fun times.

4:00 You're are absolutely right . I knew it in advance, before the results, but it's nice to watch the theory in practice, good video. The longer the rifling is, the wider pattern. A smoothbore barrel would be better and the results would be the opposite, the longer barrel the tighter pattern as long as there is not any choke involved.

In retrospect, I suppose it makes sense that the longer barrel has a wider pattern. The longer the barrel, the faster the shot will spin (generally). The faster they spin, the more centrifugal force is acting on them, pulling each bb away from the center of the spread.

Glad to see CCI has finally come out with a shot load that is worthy of the companies name. I loaded shot in .357 mag & 44 mag for years. It is some of the best home defense loadings you could ever ask for. 1 or more shots into the groin & up, the perp is no longer interested in what you have. The upside of all that do not completely penetrate, someone has to go have whatever enter them removed, lead poison is not pleasant. Got ya sucker, no matter what you did to me. As usual, great video.

Just watched this again. I have a fair amount of experience with CCI and Federal .22 LR shot shells, but only a little with.38/357. Up to 6-7 feet I have been AMAZED at how well the .22 LR shot shells work on our small prairie rattlers... turns their lights OUT! almost NO wiggle and no mouth movement (merely a bit of tail twitch). Works far better than cutting their heads off with a shovel. I'm hoping to get some more experience with the .38 / 44 in the #4 shot configuration, but I'm sure it will be totally deadly up to 10 feet. (So far all the shot shells I've fired from a revolver have averaged a spread of one inch per foot of distance.) Great vid! I went out and bought some of the #4!

Main reason to explain why the COP performed so well is that the rifling grooves in the barrel spread out the pattern far far more than if it was smoothbore. Since the barrel length is short with little to no rifling, The Pellets don't spread and remain fairly consistent in spread. These shotshells would make a COP a damn decent 4 shot defense gun.

The shorter the barrel, the better. I presume it is because the rifling twist the group of pellets inside the pipe better with longer barrels, and is good with slugs but not with pellets, because you make the pattern more wider as you give the pellets more "circular force" and it gives it more aceleration, wich disperses the individual balls of lead

Shorter barrel also means lower velocity. The rifle allowed gas to build up behind the shot so once it left the barrel it was at a higher velocity, his pen test shows this.

Commenting before watching So my guess is that the henry and rugger because of longer barrel will have the worst spread because the shot has more time to spin up because of the rifling while the little 4 shot has a very short barrel so the shot might not spin as fast and therefore the spread should be the smallest. Going to watch the video and see how wrong or correct it was :P

I got the opposite shot spread results using a .44 cartridge black powder pistol and rifle. The difference being no plastic shot casing in the BP loads. Two over powder wads were used over10 grains of 3FG then one overpowder wad, the #4 shot, then one or two wads over the shot. I also got your results in CCI .22 shot loads but the opposite results in a crimped non encapsulated .22 shot load. Good video!

It's weird that US law means you cant generally buy a smooth bore pistol. A deringer 410 smooth bore would be perfect for humane dispatch and many other tasks when out hunting. You could use slugs if required and the pattern would be so much better with shot.

I believe the Taurus Judge series of .410/.45 Colt revolver families have the minimum amount of rifling to meet the standards of NFA 1934 to not be considered a 'smooth bore handgun' and, from what I have heard, this causes accuracy to suffer when shooting .45 Colt rounds with bullets. But who cares? The whole idea was a devastating, closer range, self defense weapon, not a target pistol.
