I once had a sit down with a motorcycle gang enforcer. I'd promised to get him real messed up if he answered my questions. A friend had done some time with him so I had someone he trusted vouching for me. I'll never forget one question I asked was how do you enforce on a guy that is sure you're not suppose to kill him? He said he'd show up with the first round being snakeshot and plug the person in the leg. "They'd hear the bang, feel the pain and see the blood and start complying with me"

Should compare the .45 Colt shotshells to .410 shotshells out of the Raging Judge. See if the pistol shotshells seem to give any kind of advantage out of the short barrel vs. the .410 in a similar bird shot.

@@eldeestephens From what I can see, both a .410 in #9 shot and a .45 Colt in #9 shot both have a payload weight of roughly 1/3oz, so, in theory, they should be pretty comparable, especially out of the same gun. (As I'm sure you know, most of these .410/.45 Colt guns have very shallow rifling so there will be minimal spread.) It would be interesting to see if theory and practice match. (In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they usually aren't.)

Reloaders can have some fun with shot shell loads in any straight-wall cartridge. In the .45-70 I fill the case halfway full of 2Fg black powder, seat a gas check firmly onto the powder, fill the case with #8 shot to slightly below the case mouth, then seat a reversed gas check onto the shot and give it a firm crimp and they're ready to go. Why black powder? Because I don't know of any tested data with smokeless powder for this type of round, but I do know I won't get into trouble with black powder. It just takes a little more cleanup.

I also build gas-check shot loads in everything from 38 S&W (for the old inexpensive double-barrel "derringers") to 454 Casull, albeit with smokeless powders. The 454 loads are easily the equal of .410 shotshells, and I generally load #11 or 12 shot in all calibers for the densest patterns possible in snake country.

If you're looking for a good compromise, CCI makes a .38/.357 shotshell as well. I live in the Copperhead epicenter of the world, and with the kids and critters to worry about, I keep a revolver loaded with the .38 shotshells in the kitchen from April through October.

I have the shot shells in 22lr and 45acp. The 22’s for my Heritage rough rider and the 45’s for my RIA 1911. They actually function in the 45 without a hiccup and cycle the action every time. I have killed mice with the 22. They worked just fine.

I used CCI .22 once for a water moccasin out on our dock. It was a fairly large snake, but not huge. Standing ~4-5' away, shooting out of an old Ruger single six (believe it's the 6" model). That snake wasn't even phased, literally just sat there. I fired off two more shots and eventually he was like "eh this is a bit annoying" and slipped off into the water. Ever since I have been curious to try some of their bigger pellet loads in .38 (only other revolver I own), feel like the bigger shot would be more effective.

I've killed many cottonmouth up to 25 feet but definitely beyond that it's pretty much useless with the 22 but I simply use birdshot in my little Public Defender and it gets with the program but I've made up my mind even with that not to waste a 4-10 much past 15 to 20 yards because the spread gets too big after that. Man you're shooten the high dollar stuff I bet with the CCI 45 shot shells. I really enjoyed the 😳oh💩 look when the hammer dropped on the little hand cannon.😆 For sure another really fun video.👍

I tested .44 Rem Mag CCI bird shot shells in a Ruger Super Blackhawk with 7.5” barrel, shooting at two pieces of 5/8” drywall separated by a 2x4” frame. At personal defense distances the shot penetrated the first piece of drywall but ALL of the shot was stopped by the second piece of drywall. Those test were made in the early 1980s. It would be interesting to repeat the test today.

I have taken countless Small game with these shells, including three medium sized rattle snakes with the 22LR out of a NAA mini 1 1/8" barrel I had my doubts about that working but on all three occasions it was one shot instant results from maybe three or four feet away i carry them in my 9mm and 38 on the farm and they are absolute hell on pack rats and make hitting a moving, running , at a high rate of speed pest a real possibility extremely useful load for pests around the farm. like having a little shotgun in your pocket . I imagine they could be very useful in a survival type scenario as well for small game hunting

I remember trying out a .22 shot shell through a rifle a few decades ago, but only on a paper target. It had a massive spread. The box at the time said to fire through a smootbore long arm (I guess I can't call it a rifle if it has no rifling) or a pistol. That kind of makes sense, since the centrifugal force would create a wide spread of shots. A pistol would not have as much opportunity to impart as much spin. Then I was wondering how many .22 smoothbores "rifles" there are.😕

Have toyed with handgun shotshells for decades now. I have found shotshells handloaded using gas checks much superior to the plastic shot cups or Factory loaded shot rounds. The .45 LC gives the best performance, (of course).
