FCTR: How To Simulate Multiple Violins

Музыка

There are several ways to simulate the sound of two (or more) violins playing using basic effects pedals...
Harmonizers let you split your tone and so-called "intelligent" harmonizers can be set to play diatonic harmonizing pitches within a selected key.
Octaver effects double your fundamental pitch an octave higher (or lower, depending on the effect pedal and settings). This adds to the illusion of a string section texture.
Detune and Chorus effects simulate two (or more) violins playing together.
For the fullest texture, combine effects, such as an octaver with a detune or chorus.

hey Matt! I am hearing this video two years after you recorded it and love the depth of explanations you have on the differences between pedals and effects. It is wonderfully comprehensive and works really well when you have a wooden acoustic violin with a higher end pickup (Baggs, Fishman, Schertler). For over 20 years I worked a combination of delay, chorus, and reverb to get a fatter orchestral sound. The modern sampling methods of some all-in-on guitar boards do a great job of putting all your controls in one box. I have graduated my sound pedal from Boss GT-6 to now using a Boss GT-100 to utilize some of the great controls over each individual effect. I use the built in looper function to store a string pad and then solo a clearer moderately delayed violin over the top of that. Great for wedding background music! Keep up the great work with the EVShop and hope to see a video on using a violin with an all-in-one board showing the same effects!

There is a Jerry Goodman passage somewhere on the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame where he's got the chorus box turned to 11, and it is just the greatest rock string sound I ever heard.

A couple new pedals that just came out is the TC electronic Mimiq Doubler and the Keeley 30ms. They're both similar, and are specifically made to create a doubled sound. If you're lucky enough to have two amps, they sound incredible!

I try to imagine what a string quartet with octave+detuner+chorus+ delay with some doublestops here and there would sound... The cello sould sound like a bunch of cellos, doublebass and violas, the viola would sound like a bunch of cellos, violas and violines, and the same with violines... It would sound pretty much like the whole string section + some... Its an amazing tool for neoclassical metal

I wonder what would happen if you record a dry signal then do a mix between harmonizer and chorus (while minimizing the doppler effect if possible). So here's how it would work: - Record with the harmonizer pedal with whatever key you like - Separate the dry signal from the harmonizer signal - Delete the harmonizer signal - Recreate the harmonizer signal by copying the dry signal, then using auto tune to get it to the desired harmonized pitch - Give it a detune effect or a slow moving chorus effect to minimize the doppler effect - Change the eq on the harmonized signal so it sounds a bit more muddy (I think it'll help it become a bit more realistic sounding) - Make your adjustments to make it sound as realistic as you can I know it's a tough procedure but I think it would be a nice video

I'd gi with the EHX HOG2. Great box with tons of options, and it saves presets!

I'm curious, have you tried the TC Electronic Mimiq pedal?

You're right Matt they're not building gear for violin, so we continue building violins that accommodate the gear available. Question: I would like to see a coarse on utilizing midi violin. Midi violin has improved since the zeta latency days. Why am I not seeing violinist utilizing this resource? Multiple voicing through midi is a richer option

It's coming. Our resident expert on looping is Shana Tucker. She's a part time employee here because she's a full-time touring artist and we're right in the middle of a super busy season for her.

Hey Matt. Given a choice between the HR-2 and PS-6, would you still default to the HR-2? I'm playing a Realsit Rv-5e and am at least looking for a pedal with a clean, well-tracked octave-down function, but the HR-2's additional octave+detune function does look quite appealing, too.

Me personally? I've been playing with the HR-2 so long and have built so many sounds around it that I'll stick with it. I don't use the down-octave on it, though, just the up-octave. If I wanted a down octave pedal, I'd probably go with the POG. That's a nearly universal choice for violinists.

Is there an effect pedal that will sound very similar to the HR-2 as this sound is perfect?

Sir can we use this pedals in a acoustic violin with a normal pickup ????

  • @ElectricViolinShop

Subhrajit Nandy - Yes. you can! You will hear your acoustic's dry tone along with the effect, and acoustic violins are more susceptible to feedback, but you can certainly use effects with a violin pickup.
