FCTR: Choosing and Using Amplifiers

There are hardly any amplifiers out there designed to work specifically with violin. For string players then, choosing an amplifier becomes a matter of testing for a good match with your electric violin. Often, acoustic instrument amps work well with violin because they usually have a high impedance input. Check that the amp you're buying colors your tone in a way that you find pleasing and that it doesn't break up when you play double stops!
Once you have an amp you can use it on stage for monitoring (05:11), for tone coloring (05:44), or for amplification (06:18).
If you need help pairing your violin, viola, cello or upright bass with an amp, contact us at info@electricviolinshop.com or call us between 10am-6pm Eastern, M-F at 919-806-3311. Over the years we've tested all sorts of amps and selected several that work well with most violins. We'll help pair your instrument to an amp that fits your needs and your budget.

    Very informative! One thing I want to mention is using the DI out from your preamp gives you a low impedance signal to use. That is for the pre amp I'm currently using (Grace ALiX). We run everything to a Soundcraft mixer and then through 2 Bose L1 Model 1S PA's. It works well for acoustic instruments. Still, if I had the energy I'd play through a tube amp, but I've already got too much to carry and set up!! Thanks again for a very informative video!!

    True. That's definitely worth mentioning. It is possible to convert your high impedance signal to a low impedance signal and then shoot it into whatever amp you like. Maybe you need some roadies! Then you can use all the gear you want. lol!

    We always say "try it" and see if you like it first. In our experience, Peavey amps are pretty brightly voiced, which is great for guitar but some people may think is *too* bright for violin. If you get a violin and add a good preamp (such as a the LR Baggs Para DI) or effects unit with preamp/EQ like the BOSS ME-80 then you may be able to shape your signal in a way that works well with the Peavey amp. If not we offer others like the Kustom Sienna series, BOSS Katana series and Fishman Loudbox series amps that work great with violin and won't break the bank.

    There are several issues with guitar amplifiers. The biggest one is impedance. Electric violins tend to have impedances in the 1-5 MOhm range. Electric guitars are usually in the 300-400kOhm range. Another issue is voicing. Electric violins (and their overtones) are voiced at least an octave above guitars. A bright instrument into a bright amp can be a real problem. Plus, bowed strings act very differently than plucked strings. Double-stop distortion is a real issue with some guitar amps. The only way to know for sure if a guitar amp will work well with a violin is to try it.

    Thanks so much for this informative video! New to your channel and have a question: I’m just a casual fiddler, no expert but got into electric violin a couple of years ago as a occasional thing. I play bass and have a Traynor DynaBass 800H Head on a generic 4 speaker cabinet that I don’t even know the name of, but works good for small gigs.. But when I got my first e-violin, a Wav4, I just plugged it into the Bass setup and made a bunch of adjustments and it actually sounded pretty decent to my untrained ear! Emphasis on untrained!! My question is, is this Traynor Bass Setup a bad idea for my violin and would I be getting a far superior sound by getting a Katana 50 or 100 for example, or will the current setup keep me close! Problem is, I live in the middle of nowhere and don’t have a lot of violists to talk to, much less electric ones. And on that same note, I don’t wanna spend extra money on an amp, if I don’t really have to, as this is not my primary instrument! That being said, I’ve been getting into violin a lot more lately and would love a dedicated setup.. My inexperience is the problem.. Thanks a bunch for any input! Bottom line, will a decent Bass Setup work as a violin amplification or will that give me a far inferior sound! Thanks again! Blessings

    There are a two reasons we can't really give tone knob setting recommendations. One is that tone is totally subjective, and what sounds good to us here may not sound good to you. Second, every amp and instrument are different and sound differently when paired together, so there's no ideal tone setting. Your best bet is to set all the knobs to 12 o'clock (or 5 out of 10, or half way, or whatever the most neutral setting is). Then adjust the Bass knob all the way down while leaving the others neutral. Play a lot of different bow strokes and listen closely to what you hear. What gets lost by subtracting bass frequencies? What sounds better by lowering the bass? Then set the bass back to neutral and repeat the process with the others. You'll find that raising or lower each setting helps or hurts your tone and then you can work with adjusting them in pairs. Eventually you'll find a tone you love. Endless tone tweaking is just a reality for all amplified musicians, and each piece of gear you add to the equation causes you to have to recalibrate all over again. Even once you find you optimal tone you may change your tastes at a later time. :)

    No problem! And to answer the impedance question, your electric violin is almost certainly a hi-impedance violin, so use that setting. And regarding reverb, a little goes a long way toward making your violin tone come to life. Too much and you'll sound like your stuck in a well!

    Pratim, the new Boss Katana 50 has an acoustic setting, which sounds great with electric violins (including the Stingray SVX4) when you want to sound like an acoustic violin. When you want to sound more like an electric guitar, the Katana amps still sound good with electric violins, and the built-in effects are quite good. At only $200, the Katana 50 www.electricviolinshop.com/boss-katana-50-combo-amp-with-effects.html is an impressive value, as it eliminates the need for a separate effects processor.

    Hey Matt. I am using a YEV-105 with Peavey Classic 20 Mini Head. So far with good results. But I do want to work my tone to compliment my band mates who run thru 5150 and Orange amps. I see you have Woods Violin and you say you use JMC 800. What amp would you suggest considering the lowest string on my YEV is C, should I down tune the whole fiddle to add crunch to my sound?

  • @ElectricViolinShop

    @ElectricViolinShop

    7 жыл бұрын

    That's a tough question. It's one of those things you'll just have to experiment with. It took me years to tweak my sound. Lots of listening to recordings, too. As far as tuning down, that's one way that guitar players have added crunch and depth to their sound throughout the years. Unfortunately, YEVs don't have a lot of bottom end power. They tend to be pretty thin and clear. I don't know how much money you're willing to spend, but for about $500-600, you could put a Barbera pickup on that YEV and have a fire-breathing monster. That'd be cheaper than a different amp, probably.

If you decide at any point you'd like to get into stompbox pedals or multi-effects processors you can still use them with the Katana 50, which is a really nice sounding amp in its own right. On a tight budget we really like the ART Tube MP: www.electricviolinshop.com/preamps/art-tube-mp.html You can use a DI box as well, but to use it with an amp you would either need to find one with a 1/4" output or pair it with an amp that accepts an XLR input. The ART Tube MP above has both 1/4" and XLR out, so it's perfect for violin to amp.

    We always recommend trying what you have first and deciding what your ears think. When we tried the Performer here in the shop, it did sound okay with a few models, but not very good with others (harsh and brittle, surprisingly). We tend to carry amps that sound good with nearly all electric violins, rather than ones that only sound good with some, so there are no surprises when someone orders an amp for any given electric.

    @@depressed_marvin , what I would recommend to test an amp with any electric violin with an amp is to turn the volume up on the violin, set the Gain on the amp to about 1/3, and play a lot of double-stops, especially on the A and E strings. If the signal breaks up (sounds like an electric guitar with distortion), then the amp is not a particularly good match for the violin. That said, if you *like* the sound you're getting from your amp, then I wouldn't worry about getting another one.

    John, you would definitely want to use the HI input, as nearly every electric violin uses a piezoelectric pickup, which has a much higher impedance than the magnetic pickups of an electric guitar. Other than that, let your ears be the guide. Some amps that just *shouldn't* work well with violin somehow manage to be the exception to the rule, so whenever our customers already *have* an amp, we always recommend trying your amplified or electric violin through that amp first. If it sounds great, you're golden; if sounds awful, you can always buy a new amp *after* you've discovered that the one you've already got won't work.

    Thank you so much for your prompt reply and excellent reviews. I wanted confirmation about the HI for electric violin. (My cheapo is nice and easy to play, as I'm a beginner. But it has a cheap 1/8 jack!)

    Hello there! Which amp would you recommend for the cello? I remember you said about 12’ speakers but the Fishmann Loudbox Mini has a 6,5’ speaker and it’s still recommended for cello.

    So, generally speaking the bigger the speaker, the better the bass response, but size has more to do with how much air a speaker can move, particularly at very low bass frequencies. Earbud speakers are tiny, but if they are well designed you can get very good bass sound in your ears. If you take them out and point them at an audience that's 10 feet away the listeners may hear the highest frequencies but won't hear any of the bass, because the smaller speakers can only drive sound efficiently at high frequencies. The Fishman Loudbox Mini (and Artist) amps work just fine with cello (and with 7-string violin, which has the same range) but won't push the bass sound out as loudly, hard and far as a cabinet with an 8" or 10" or 12" or 14" speaker would. You can get the Fishman amp pretty loud without destroying your fidelity because it has a 1" soft dome tweeter to provide clarity for the top end, which may otherwise get distorted as you crank the volume. You can fill small to medium-sized venues with really clear sound from a Fishman Loudbox Mini amp. If you play in a loud amplified band and/or in larger venues you can always use the XLR out on the back of the amp to hook up to the mixing board and out to the much larger PA speakers, or mic the amp and sent that to the PA for better coverage of your amp's sound, as described towards the end of the video above. Hope that helps! :)

    To answer the question which amp would we recommend for cello, obviously we feel the Fishman Loudbox Mini and Artist are good. We also really like the Acoustic Image amps, particularly the Contra and the Ten2, for cello and bass. The top-of-the-line recommendation would be the Acus One ForBass Cello / Double Bass Amp, which is the only amp we've ever carried that was specifically designed with the unique colors of cello and upright bass in mind. Electric Violin Shop Account Thank you for replying. Unfortunately here in Brazil we can’t find these brands you recommended for cello. From another talk, you recommended the Boss Katana 50 for cello. Which one would be worth buying: the Fishmann Loudbox Mini or the Boss Katana 50? Thank you!

    Yes, if you're getting a solid body violin then you won't make any sound without one. Now, if it's a headphone practice instrument (i.e. Yamaha Silent violin or any electric with a headphone preamp/output) or if you will plug into a PA system for amplification then you don't need an amp, but really you ought to have one.

    Robert, if you want anyone else to be able to hear you, and especially if you want to play in a band, you will have to have an amplifier. The un-amplified sound of an electric violin is very quiet, similar to what an electric guitar sounds like if you just strum the strings when it's not plugged in.

    Any recommendations for an amp that goes with the NS Violin WAV4?

    Any we sell on our site will work. It depends what you need it for. The BOSS Katana 50 is a really good jack of all trades amp that works for practice, recording, is powerful enough for performance and doesn't cost a fortune. C. Penn Hey man, how do you like your Wav4? I’ve had mine for years as like a secondary but never really liked the shoulder piece as it’s near impossible to really tighten on mine, and it’s just a hassle and hurts the fingers.. I’m wondering if you ever did anything with yours? Cuz I can’t be the only one complaining about the shoulder piece.. thanks in advance

    What do you think start learning violin with a Electric Violin?

  • @ElectricViolinShop

    @ElectricViolinShop

    It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a concert violinist, it's probably better to learn on an acoustic. If you want to be an electric violinist, go ahead and learn on an electric. Draw the parallel between violin and guitar. Plenty of world-class electric guitarists really don't play acoustic very much.

    You can learn the violin on an electric, but there are two caveats: 1) It is very difficult to learn the violin without a teacher, and not all teachers are willing to teach a student on an electric due to their own lack of familiarity with electrics. We do maintain a list of electric strings teachers and could possibly connect you with one in your area if you tell us where you are. (You can email us at info@electricviolinshop.com) 2) One important part of playing the violin is learning to project sound with a strong bow technique. The electric violin can project tone at just about any volume when plugged into and amplifier, so learning only on electric may not result in developing the best bow technique for when you do need to project on an acoustic. Traditionally most violinists have learned on acoustic and then adopt electric. That said, we know of at least one violinist (a customer of ours) who *taught herself* on an electric violin and is now playing electric violin professionally with a well known goth band! Whether you choose to learn on electric depends on your playing goals.

    Hi Thanks for your quick reply! I am mainly looking to play in small gigs, my apartment (studio in size), so Loudness is not the main aim, 1. I am mostly looking for basic delay/reverb effects, additional effects like distortion is a plus.. 2. I am mainly worried about the 1. loudness 2. Feedback because of the violin body.. (also since I am a newbie, how do I decide on the power ratings?) thanks once again!

    Deciding on how many watts is tricky. Not all watts are created equal. I'll say this, though. I've never wished I had less power, but I've often wished I had more. So, when in doubt, err on the side of bigger. I like both the Fishman Loudbox series (Mini or Artist) and the Boss Katana series (50 or 100). The Katana has more features for less money. The Loudbox has a slightly richer sound. My only gripe about the Loudbox series is that the Mini doesn't have a headphone jack. So if you wanted to use your amp for silent practice, either skip the Mini or you'll have to use a headphone jack from some piece of equipment upstream of the amp.
