My mother's uncle was suspected to have been in the CIA. He spent a lot of his life in Beirut and in Iran during the reign of the last shah. He claimed to have worked for a milk company that made the wax cartons milk used to come in and was trying to bring milk into popularity in Iran. Our family always thought this story was ridiculous.

A friend of mine worked for the secret service and the entire time he said he owned and operated a bakery, then after he finished his stint with the secret service, he bought a bakery, lol

Guy I grew up with a retired USSS sniper. They were given unofficial public jobs based on the building they protected. He primarily "worked" for the National Archives iirc. Afaik, he's now an arms instructor at their training facility.

Why would the Secret Service actually be "secretive"? Historically they were a part of the Treasury Dept but were absorbed into Homeland Security after 9/11. Besides protecting high government officials of the US and foreign governments (when visiting the US), they also investigate counterfeiting and other financial crimes. They are a law enforcement agency bearing more resemblance to the FBI, DEA or ATF than to the truly secret CIA.

The FBI is a national domestic law enforcement agency, while the CIA is a foreign-focused intelligence gathering agency. The CIA coordinates and liaisons with US military branches to carry out international operations deemed to be in the national interest. The CIA and Secret Service are not the same at all. The Secret Service operates under the Treasury Department. They are tasked with providing security to executive officials and their immediate families, as well as dealing with currency fraud.

For brits CIA = MI6 and FBI = MI5 + NCA… also there is DIA =DI and NSA = GCHQ

The NSA dwarfs both of them in terms of budget and secrecy.

Navy SEALs are part of combat units, there are no active desk jockey SEALs lol that's what other Naval personnel are for

Yes, they part of Special Operations Forces. Navy seals are a tier 2 level of funding as part of Department of the Navy and only in Navy. Devgru or (Seal Team 6) fall under Tier 1 funding along with CAG (Delta Force) under JSOC.

There are some automatic disqualifications for the CIA that is not that obvious. Having worked with the Peace Corps, been a medical doctor, or a priest will automatically bar you from getting into the CIA. (The Peace Corps will also not hire anyone that has worked for the CIA). The CIA will also not use some jobs as cover stories as well. This is for the safety of aid and humanitarian workers worldwide. The CIA is also not normally allowed to conduct missions other than training on US soil. Most counter intelligence/ counter espionage operations are usually run by the FBI in the United States, while the COA does this overseas. I purposely used “usually” instead of a more definitive word because there sometimes is an overlap with foreign intelligence activity.

I just realized that Mike's a secret government agent.....or maybe I didn't.

My cousin is retired from the CIA. I didn't know where he worked until he retired. He was in Afghanistan in the early 2000s. I did find out that much (after retirement, of course) but I have no idea what he did. His college degree is in computer sciences, so I can imagine. He had rooms in his house that no one was allowed to enter.

@@mindigd meant to type SCIF. It's a security room designed for compartmentalized data, aka data you don't want anyone to access. Most agents use them for analysis, as hacking a SCIF is damn near impossible. Think like a nuclear bunker for data.

I believe it, found out my grandpa after he died being a CIA op during the Cold War with Russia. He was retired from military after 25 yrs. Apparently he was with CIA, fluent in Russian, found spy manuals cleaning out his home office. After his burial, two very tall and pale men dressed in black suits and hats came into the house, spoke with my Uncle and walked out of grandpa's "home" office with two large boxes of papers. The tall men were like albino pale white and strange looking. Not natural, gave me the creeps.

The guy states to join the FBI, you must be 23-37, etc. that’s in regard to Agents. A person can join the FBI as a scientist, computer engineer, etc. at any age over 18.

This issue should be readily understandable to Brits--it's similar to the difference between MI-5 and MI-6. I suspect the CIA gets quite few agents from the military, contrary to what you guys said. Historically, they had people on college campuses and other places where people are trained in the occupations they need who recruited. And at least in fiction (but I think there's some truth to it) they were a rather elitist agency, especially interested in recruiting at America's most selective universities.

Thats absolutely true for any sort of analysis job, forensic, desk job, drone operator, etc, etc. While true espionage activities are rare, that's when they'll send in a person they recruited from special forces. For any true boots on the ground specialists? They absolutely recruit from the top echelon of the military. Some navy seals and definitely from delta force. If you're a literal spy on enemy soil you're going to be required to have so much training that much of special forces have just as prerequisites. Covert
