In 1963, Father Bill Mackey, a sixty-one-year-old half-Bhutanese and half-Canadian Jesuit educator living in the remote mountains of eastern Bhutan, was asked by the King to help set up Bhutan’s first educational system. Father Mackey thus became the Principal of the Sherubtse School, which has since become Bhutan’s first university-level educational institution. He also became the only foreigner (along with only four Bhutanese) to have ever received that country’s highest award: the Beloved Son of Bhutan Medal. This film examines his work, his philosophy and his desires for the future.
En 1963, le Père Bill Mackey, un enseignant jésuite canado-bhoutanais vivant dans les montagnes de l’est du Bhoutan, fut invité par le roi à établir le tout premier système d’éducation au Bhoutan. Ainsi, le Père Mackey fut nommé directeur de l’école Sherubtse, devenue depuis le premier établissement d’enseignement de niveau universitaire au Bhoutan. Il est également le seul étranger (en compagnie de seulement quatre citoyens bhoutanais) à se voir décerner le plus grand honneur du pays : la Médaille du fils bien-aimé du Bhoutan. Le film se penche sur son parcours, ses philosophies et ses aspirations pour l’avenir.
