    Avatar Issue Update: Hi everyone, between me recoding my review and today Walksnail have reached out and confirmed a few things regarding what I have highlighted in my post. They are working on new firmware to resolve the issues I have highlighted and will be released a soon as possible. Secondly it’s been confirmed that the Walksnail Goggle is actually 5S rated as well an the original info was incorrect. As I understand it the Walksnail goggle is identical to Fatshark Dominator and as I said in my video they come with antennas included. That would make the Walksnail Avatar a better purchase over the Fat Shark from a monetary point of view however how their support for issues will pan out remains to be seen compared to Fat Shark. I know there are things I have not covered in this video and there is so much more to add but it would have gone on for hours. This is my honest and true thoughts on where it’s at today. Thanks Mad

    Great to watch the review now why I have not get one, most likely never, cause flying dji drones and FPV planes make the decision a lot easier just due to not willing to invest in 2 goggles and vtx aka air units. But I follow the topic and updates closely just to ever be prepared to leave the dji ship once it takes water and get a list from my point of view. Far from being happy with dji and still relying on a mavic 2 pro and its goggles. Good review on spot and enjoy the Summer sun you had kindly send to us after 8 days of bad weather at least for mid Summer. I sit on the bank enjoying the Sunset after flying my Mini 2 batteries down to the bitter end. Couldn't be a better moment when you released it. Thanks, hope to see your Carl s system soon. He is the guy to understand real reviews and critics to improve. Good luck.

    Fatshark repair in UK is gone. They shut down a while back. Not heard of any replacement and EU used to send there items to UK repair centre. Something to ponder anyways. Could be costly and timely. Would be a good idea to check as support may not be as good as it once was for uk/eu customers

    For what it's worth, I got terrible performance from the Walksnail goggle antennas and don't consider them to be much of a value, unless one is on the tightest of budgets. I didn't try swapping out the vTX antennas so I couldn't say if they were any good.

    It looks very much as if the WS system isn't using adaptive compression/bitrate to anywhere near the same extent that DJI is doing. This explains why the image quality still seems good when the RF levels drop but at that point latency spikes. WS seems to have favoured image quality over latency in this situation. These are "tuning" issues which hopefully will be resolved as the system matures.

  • @JoshuaBardwell

    @JoshuaBardwell

    2 жыл бұрын

    I agree. Before the x.5 firmware, they had fewer latency spikes and blurry image. I think they just turned the knob the other way, but still haven't figured out how to improve the system overall.

  • @johnfaustus1

    @johnfaustus1

    2 жыл бұрын

    There's actually a couple things going on here with WS. The crazy compression they are using creates anti-redundancy - more information is put into fewer bits, and makes subsequent frames much more dependent on preceding ones. Also, their video codec is almost certainly nowhere near as degradation tolerant as DJI's, resulting in a probably a ridiculous amount of forward error correction. Regardless of DJI's 25Mb/s or 50Mb/s or adaptive, they have written the rest of the system to have predictable (and early-warning capable) degradation, even at sometimes significant cost of clarity of image. Anyway, the amount of time and money the RF, EE, and firmware guys in Nanshan have spent will make WS's job quite difficult. On a philosophical note, I'm conflicted: I want a competitor, but don't want FatShark to benefit. We shouldn't forget how they sat on their butts for a decade without any innovation and grifted pilots with $550 goggles whilst having a BOM cost of $90. I do want them to meet their comeuppance.

    Elrik Toft shared some DVR footage using 23.23.4 firmware and provided the DVR files. What I noticed is that the DVR records at 39mbs so my sense is trying to get a real sense of what this looks like in googles is going to break down and be difficult. This other thing I'm picking up is that the Avatar and DJI systems handle poor quality signal, or break up differently. I still fly analog so trying to see do I care and on the plus side I like the better clarity that Avatar can give when signal is weak, the muddy effect isn't too appealing. If I'm understaning this correctly, then with the cliff edge approach you'd expect to see what'd I'd call almost a full frame loss in areas of signal loss thus causing a jittery or stutter in the video feed. My sense is people find they like one approach better than the other, and I'd take the same approach with any system of getting to knowing the area where I'm flying so I don't fly into an area where your video feed goes dark completely and you can't get home. Again, seems like it's going to be a personal preference thing based on how your brain reacts. Thanks for all the work, I really appreciate it.

However, it seems pretty likely to me that in six months time or a year, Walksnail will have tweaked the firmware to the point where it will probably be at the same image quality and rf behavior level as dji. There certainly seems to be potential for that. And,, if Walksnail do manage that, then their product at that point will imo be superior to dji because of full BF OSD availability in Walksnail. Also, Walksnail seem to be much much more responsive to the fpv community's thoughts and desires, than dji. Furthermore, the Walksnail goggles seem to me much superior to the dji goggles, due to oled screens, better form factor, less weight, focus adjustment, better style and dmi out. I would totally wait a couple or a few months to see how fast the Walksnail system evolves, before deciding which system to buy. In a couple months' time I think we will have a better feel for how much potential there is in the Walksnail product. My gut feeling is that Walksnail will turn out to be a very desirable system. I also like where HDzero is going, with their constant latency and lighter-weight vtxs. It's just really hard to decide which way to go right now.

    Thank you for this. Ideally, DJI sees this as a genuine threat. If they do, AND DJI was interested in continuing to offer FPV systems aside from their FPV drones, then DJI may be motivated to increase the capabilities of their FPV system. In the end, at least DJI accelerated the development of other digital FPV systems.

    I think fatshark have actually missed a fundamental feature on there goggles which NO reviewer has brought up. Fatshark are not making vtx's. So to sell a goggle at as high a price as they are with no cross compatibility is a joke. If walksnail go under or decide to cease production, these are some rather expensive paperweights. Even dji goggles had composite in. It would not be the first time a company has entered the HD space and left without trace. (Connex prosight)

    for the history of channel 1, do you remember when you "bind" them, if you were on channel 1 or 2? because if it is, you have to bind in 1 and then maybe all the channels would work? (an idea like that because of the quality of the firmware.... maybe too early?) I'm waiting for the DJI V3 (v5 in reality), because with a little luck and intelligence, it will be at least can be compatible with my current air unit or vista drones?? that would be awesome and still put the competition down once again. and yet we cannot say that the competition did not have time to react.. (and I remain on the idea that dji sold its technology to caddx.. which turned into Walksnail/fs in order to to avoid having that to manage.. because it may not be the same chips, but too similar and it smells of quickly being badly done..) but in these times of war, there is a shortage, how to do better at the same price as dji at the time? impossible, and this video proves it. overall not great. but it's not for those who don't have

    They will never tell you, but it is more or less a core part for some industrial applications here which they sell a lot to. You will see an Upgrades new version for sure soon being the market leader or in particular DOMINATOR. A bit less latency, more range, more immersion, OLED, bigger battery - the usual things, nothing too fancy. But of cause a price increase - or the opposite to cause their competitors headaches. In Europe some dji executives have been talking about the topic in a more general kind like open questions as I said: Why should the market developer and dominator retreat If sales had been strong? And the smile that followed seemed to be even bigger than the market share.

    latency is higher than DJI, it only shows a lower latency on OSD but measured it's about the same or worse, the average latency on Fatshark is still higher for now, OLED is nice, and smaller form factor, for now lower performance and more expensive.

    I have tried the Dominator today (recent purchase). The OLED is very nice indeed, and more luscious compared to my V2 DJI. I think there is really milage in the dominator, something really strange is going on the software. When I first did bind and fly after update the image was amazing, better than the DJI I would say, I then went into the menu and then something happened with the image and it seemed not as good as the DJI. I do believe that if they get the software right then they will be a clear winner. Betaflight OSD, no need to register the air units or goggles, the goggles are so so light and small and the OLED is stunning. Are those things enough to upgrade... only you can decide. If they get the software a bit better then for those not on digital then I would probably advise the dominator as it is at the beginning of its life, not just about to be discontinued.

(but is not like the air unit, with nothing to put it on a frame BUT you can put it on a frame with zip ties.. because it dont decompose itself..) but you dont have a nice dji vs fs because one with two antennas and a vista with one, is not really equaly..

    Man... as a consumer, this vs DJI feels exactly like the early days of the ios vs android smartphones haha... DJI is like iOS and has their first mover advantage with a developed firmware and system from being 2-3 years old already, but with a locked down system with some faults and etc... Walksnail is like Android with some half assed features and "potential" but came out 2 years too late and feels like it's a 1 year old product. When it's priced the same as a the DJI system, it just feels like you're paying to be a beta tester with who knows how long for it to reach the same maturity as DJI system. Who knows what else is gonna come out by the time the firmware gets to the same level as DJI...

    The DJI is terrible at 25mw too, so nothing new there. The reason you sometimes don’t get the latency freezes on for compared to google view is because of the resends, this is the same for DJI too. Considering what it is, it’s not too bad for what is essentially still a beta product, but I won’t be selling my DJI gear and jumping ship, that’s for sure.

    I think WS/FS should be worried that DJI slashed the price of the v2 goggles more than DJI should be worried about competition from a product not ready for prime time that's being compared to something DJI released a few years ago. I hate DJI but generally speaking, when you buy a DJI product they aren't selling you something that is barely ready for beta tested that MIGHT catch up with the v2 goggles someday. They'll never catch up to the goggles 2 which come out very soon. This video is very misleading if not flat out dishonest; especially with the garbage video virtually everyone else was releasing a month ago lmao

    I love to know how this review is drama and speculation when it’s in my actual hand. But hay I can’t please everyone with everything I do. I am openly critical, I push for consumers and I highlight good and bad. There is lots of the more in-depth technical content coming but again I can’t please everyone so if you find someone else that suits what you want to see better then great. If I’m not upsetting someone I’m probably not doing it properly.
