I absolutely love water fasting ! I've done 6 water fasts since getting ill with long covid in 2021. My favourite length is 4 nights and 3 days, i.e., over 72 hours (after 72 hours your immune system rejuvenates itself). The first day is easy for me, I don't notice anything different, just more time to do things because I don't have to cook nor wash the dishes. The second day I sometimes feel quite sick, especially if I didn't prepare the fast well. The 3rd day I feel totally amazing, lots of energy, clear mind, super happy, I feel soooo good in my body (outside of fasting I usually feel sick, uncomfortable, pain). Thanks to fasting I don't have the following symptoms anymore: headaches (I had them 24/7 for months), mold toxicity (combined with a detox and brain training), and considerably less brain fog. It gives me also a boost in energy, helps my body detox, lifts my mood, etc. My advice: choose the right time, when you know that you can fully rest while doing it. It is a big stressor on the body, there shouldn't be additional stress in your life when you are fasting, otherwise it will be too much on your body and an unpleasant experience. It can be a very beautiful experience during which you solely focus on your well being, reconnect to yourself, etc. Drink salted water for electrolytes or buy sugar free electrolytes. You can also drink bone broth (haven't tried it). Listen to your body, it will let you know when to stop the fast. Last month I did 5 days (the longest fast up until now), I felt extremely exhausted on day 4 and 5 so I stopped but after 1 week in a dip, I woke up with a whole new level of energy. I still prefer to do about 3,5 days, which seem to be the sweet spot for me (no dip) and I can't wait to do it again in April :)

Raelan would you say you need to be in somewhat of a calm nervous system/adrenal state to try this? I’m still in throws of cfs and disregulation and when I try to fast it sends my body spiralling into complete panic- did it worry you at all that this could trigger off fight of flight for you or do you feel your regulated state meant it felt safe to do this for your body? Well done you are SO inspiring, thank you for all you share 🙏🏻🌻

I wouldn't recommend this for people who have a lower baseline in regards to me/cfs etc. At this stage, eating regularly is likely to help more. As your baseline improves, may be play with 16 plus hours, but with anything, start low and go slow! Your body needs to feel safe and not eating for 4 days when you are close to bed or housebound is a major stressor that your nervous system isn't likely to handle well. However, many people find that fasting and cold water therapy can help further down the recovery road, when the body can handle the stress. These therapies then become useful as they build resilience. The problem when our baseline is low, is that we don't have the resilience, so we need to be really gentle with ourselves.

Well done to both of you! Nice to meet your husband, Raelan! What a lovely couple you are! Blue's cute too! I did a 5 day water fast many years before I got CFS. Probably around the early 2000's. I did it to help with stomach issues and my Naturopath said it would give my immune system a rest, as I had food intolerances. I launched into it when my husband and I took our 4 school aged children on a holiday to a beach location. I cooked everyone else's dinner each night. I didn't really crave food. I did feel quite weak though. The first thing I ate when the fast ended gave me energy, but also a sore stomach! I didn't notice any benefits from doing it, but was quite surprised how I was able to get through the whole thing. Just thought I'd share my experience. I'm not sure if there was any science around it back then. The idea to do it came from a Doctor who wrote a book about digestion issues. Take care.

I loved this so much. Honest, raw, and yet kind of fun? For the viewer, anyway 😂. I have both LC and ME and I haven’t liked how awful I’ve felt around the 40-50 hr mark. When I hit that point, I always find myself saying, “if eating now means it takes me longer to recover from LC and ME, so be it.” I do time-restricted eating most days (eating between noon-8pm), which does make 24+ hour fasts much easier to tolerate. Two questions: 1) why not take the sugar free electrolytes starting on day one? I always take them when I do a 24+ hour fast and it makes a huge difference in how I feel. And 2) have you or Geoffrey heard of Valter Longo and his fasting-mimicking diets? You can eat 500-600 calories a day of specific foods and still technically be giving your body the same or similar benefits as water fasting, according to Longo.

I'm shooting for something a bit longer right now with a couple of days of dry fasting to begin with to speed up the entry in to ketosis and there's less hunger pangs without water. Yeah, you gotta have some things to do, things that aren't too physical as you can get incredibly weak and dizzy. BTW - If you find you are experiencing heart palpitations, I recommend you perform the “Physiological Sigh” breathing technique to calm yourself and slow your heart rate. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a normal breath, then before exhaling, breath in more through your nose using your diaphragm. After the 2nd inhalation, release the air through your mouth in a Sigh. Then repeat. Keep it up for 5 minutes. There are actually videos on KZread that will guide you through a session, telling you when to inhale and exhale. You can also focus on your Breathing as you perform calming Meditation.

My guess is: link simply means correlation, not causation. Correlation in this case is really easy if you look which folks do intermittent fasting. Mostly people with health issues in the first place. (Pre-existing condition which was already there) Also, often they are people who are doing unhealthy keto with lots of animal fat, which is bad for heart health. I think it was critical that such information be released now that the GLP-1 weight loss drugs are available. Fasting with use of the GLP-1 drugs or not provides a significant threat to the profitability of the Snack Food industry. I anticipate more information about the “dangers” of Fasting are forthcoming. My personal take: People have used Fasting for decades to reverse the damage of the Chronic Diseases of Metabolic Syndrome (of which Cardiovascular Disease is only one). If Fasting were Bad for your Health, our Paleo ancestors would’ve died off long ago and Homo Sapiens would be just another failed experiment on the trash heap of Evolution. 🙀 I believe it is our DEVIATION from regular Fasting and a Low Carb Ketogenic Diet that is responsible for the accelerating epidemics of Hypertension, Liver Disease, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Strokes, Cancer, Kidney Disease, Alzheimer’s, and others that we observe today.
