Fast X - What Happens When a Movie Grows Too Big | Anatomy of a Failure

Фильм және анимация

Fast X is the tenth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise. Damn. As per usual, someone from Dom Toretto's past shows up to challenge him and his family (this time it's Jason Momoa's Dante). Then there are bunch of cool cars and races and chases and gravity-defying action sequences. And the problem is that the movie and the franchise has grown too massive. So in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's try to understand what that means.

Fast X (2023)
The end of the road begins. Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious Saga, launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises, now in its third decade and still going strong with the same core cast and characters as when it began. Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything-and everyone-that Dom loves, forever. In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom everything wrong with fast x honest trailer fast x best moments funniest moments only action fast x cars rome sequence italy scene bomb fast x explained official trailer fast x ending fast x best action scenes watch fast x full movie online free fast x watch online clip hd 4k pay the ultimate price. Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Black-ish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance. Directed by Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk), Fast X stars returning cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena and Scott Eastwood, with Oscar® winner Helen Mirren and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron.

Another problem with these movies is that characters just don't die. First Letty died in 4, but then came back two movies later. Then after Han died, they brought him back in 9. Then I saw John Cena die in this one, and I didn't believe it. Then Gal Gadot showed up at the end, even though she died back in 6, making the theory that John Cena is still alive even more likely. Stakes? What's that?

Yeah, Game of Thrones really showed the audience how much better a story can be if everyone can be on the chopping block. I feel like so many series would be better if they were willing to kill off characters. If the whole cast makes it through everything, does it lower the tension in risky situations?

@@barnabusdoyle4930 That is the main issue in writing... You establish characters and put them in a situtation and they become fan favourites... From this point on you have two options - 1. Keep them in te story as long as possible, giving them plot armor; 2. Remove them from the story by killing or some other means of them to exit and risk it all to fall apart and loose its fandom... There is no easy way to handle it... In general I support the 2 option and it works great with books, but with Movies and TV in general it doesn't because you have so little time to establish a character and if you kill him, then you did it all for nothing, but if you keep them too long in then you risk to either not move the story or to just create some side shit for this character to do, which will dissolve the story... Many authors do just that and in the end we get fan favourite characters in the 8'th season of some show that just don't have anything to do and are just there for the runtime, which drags the quality down a lot...

This whole movie felt like a support group room for Dominic. It’s hilarious. Every interaction Dominic had with a character outside of the action was just them telling him “Oww you’ve been through so much, you’re a strong person for holding on and pushing through it all” and it was sooo annoying, literally every time and I would feel it coming up in the dialogue every time.

  • @Selrisitai

My theory is that it's not an inherent attention span reduction, but a contextual one. In other words, if you have to sit and read a book, you can't do it because you fidget and there's not enough stimulation. If you watch a movie at home you get popcorn, a soda, maybe order a pizza and even then, you find something else to do with your hands, or you watch it in the background, or you have friends to goof around with while it's playing. If you go to a movie theater, however, you have this expectation that primes your mental state: I'm here to sit and watch a movie. So you can.

Well at some point they had to evolve and they did that perfectly with Fast 5. The stunts got bigger and the action got better yes, but they were still trying to get away, evade the cops and start over with new lives. And they did that. Fast 6 made sense because they wanted to bring Letty back. Fine. It made sense to some degree and stretched reality but not too much. She ran with Shaw because Braga was working for him. They explain it all. Cool. Fast 7 made sense because Shaws brother wanted revenge for attacking his brother. There are always consequences for our actions and things come back to haunt us. Cool. END IT THERE! THE FAMILY IS SAFE AND SECURE! GODDBYE! FINITA LA COMEDIA!

Loved the video, though I would argue that Dante’s core is explained when Dom confronts him and says: “you had all that money…” and basically implies that because he was born wealthy, Dante doesn’t appreciate the life of luxury he has. This matches perfectly with this statement of “I lost everything”. He lost his father that’s what hurt him the most but he didn’t really lose everything. The issue is that he’s a psychopathic spoiled rich child who’s throwing a tantrum. THAT is the true core of his character which informs every single action he does. This is also why he’s such a good foil to Dom. Dom and the gang all come from poverty and rose up, they value wealth for the safety and stability it can bring. Dante doesn’t appreciate any of it and just goes on rampage after rampage because he’s letting off steam. In the intro they also reveal that Dante presented very clear psychopathic tendencies since he was a child. All of this is what informs his character.

This is one of those movies that, if you criticize it, I can't fault you for what your criticisms are. But as for me, I still absolutely had a blast with this one. It's objectively not that good, but the execution made me smile from ear to ear.

Complete agree re Dante. His introduction was great and they set him up as this dark individual that lost it all which got me really excited and then nothing that I saw after that reinforced the great introduction.

I’ll give the movie credit for reworking the F5 scenes to have Dante and bringing back reyes’ character to fill in the gaps and splice Dante into old footage. For a complete retcon, it kinda worked for me

Holy shit. That would have made so much sense if letty restrains cipher after their fight because cipher is too dangerous to leave. Later letty proactively decides to release cipher after chatting with her. That whole fight scene make no sense before.

Sicario's dinner scene was brilliant. You get to see a character's pain without words being spoken. No monologue, no exposition about unnecessary details. Silence and eyes of death staring were enough to convey the character's nature. It truly was an amazing character all around.

It doesn't help that they are constantly ret-conning all of the major character deaths from previous movies, because it sets the precedent that no-one is in any danger whatsoever, essentially removing any sense of purpose that the characters have. Why can't they just stay dead? Oh, because the movie needs them to get people talking about it, that's why. It's a really bad habit that the Furious franchise has been abusing way too much over the past few movies.

I would like to see you do these videos using some of the older great movies from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Maybe instead of focusing completely on one more and multiple concepts, you focus on a concept and show examples of that concept done well and done poorly throughout cinema. Food for thought

It is mentioned in Fast X that Dante was in and out of hospitals since he was a child, and the fall from the bridge is implied to have given him brain damage as well, since you can see blood coming out his head. And Dante saying that he lost everything probably has more to do with him losing his father and his father's empire than his wealth. So Dante's insanity and motivations are his actual core. I think the problem is that the film doesn't make it clear that this is the case from the outset, which makes it seem like Dante's core isn't consistent.

  • @shadowsmith841

I think that could have been explained as well if dante actually lost everything including wealth and had to work his ass of to make a new criminal empire in those 10 years maybe starting as common criminal or something. That would also establish he is so determined he would stop at nothing to get what he wants(in this case revenge against dom). The movie writers probably thought it was unnecessary and filled in some fight scene instead.
