John Wick Chapter 4 is the fourth time John Wick goes out to gunfight a bunch of grunts and bad guys. Yet the movie keeps finding fresh ways of doing so, and in the process comes up with some of the greatest action sequences of all time in places like roundabouts and stairs, with weapons like dragon's breath shotguns. How does it do that? How does it keep finding fresh action? By identifying its core conceptual elements and then pairing them up with the world and people around. Here's how John Wick 4 comes up with some of the best action scenes out there and how you can too.

Chapter 4 was able to do so much stuff because Chapters 1-3 won huge audience confidence and did all the groundwork so that we care. If Chapter 4 were the first movie, or an original film not called John Wick, it would be kinda hard to understand what's going on and why. But I do fully agree that a writer should always true to get more of your setting and incorporate it into the story.

@@RastaGamesful I disagree about it ever being characterized as a mundane action movie about killers. Even in the first film, there were clear hints of deeper systems in their society. There were still an absurd amount of assassins in the Continental, gold coins, an assassin speakeasy, a body disposal service, and cops who are aware and unfazed by John's contract killing. I would say it definitely ramped up its fantastical nature in the second film and beyond, but hints of that stuff had existed since the first movie. I also can't think of any plotlines that were abandoned. I can understand if the over the top nature of it isn't your cup of tea though.

To me, it seems they had "gamefied" the movie. You got the journey to kill the main boss, fighting his army of minions and mini-bosses. You got Jumper Frog in the arc of triunph. You got Hotline Miami in the BEST SCENE OF THE MOVIE. Of course they needed the dragon breath gun, for us to see the shorts in the top down camera. You got Donkey Kong in the stairs scene. And in the end, you got the final boss fight. Don't know if I am too much into videogames to see them in everything, but I think that movie makers are now "gamefing" their movies.

Some of the early sequences where you see john wick doing the disarms and takedowns, there are moments where they hang alittle too long, long enough that you kinda seem him struggling to line up the throw. Theyve done that in previous John Wick movies but i guess after watching the whole series i just notice it abit more. I do appreciate that they show the whole move, it's just this time around the takes they used were slightly long enough that I noticed them that way Definetly loved the roundabout and the hotline miami sequence. The old boy homage was cool too.

I personally appreciate these aspects honestly! Even if it's unintentional I think it makes him come across as less flawless when he's not always actually more skilled than his opponents (as seen by being saved from likely death by allies multiple times). That and while Reeves doing the stunt work means it's not always as completely flawless as a professional stunt double might have made it it does allow them to put him in full view of the camera rather than having to conceal the double work, which is a big plus too (probably obvious to many as this is a big reason why Reeves did so much of it to begin with, but worth mentioning regardless).

I really appreciate your channel and what you do, And I especially like when you make a video about a movie you thought was done really well, because I think I speak on behalf of a lot of people who came here to learn when I say that I learn more from your critiques and analysis of good movies than bad ones, because the things that make a good movie very good are often not as easily identifiable as the things that make a bad movie bad.

I liked part 1 & 2’s gritty melee combat, in the first 2 it looks like his opponents are actually trying to be uncooperative and he has to use his technique’s more realistically. In 3 & 4 it looks more and more like ‘normal’ action choreography. It may sound odd but look at part 1 then part 3 and you see the difference very well. 4 is a good movie but it’s more of the same, not bad, a fun watch but I do feel like a part 5 won’t be adding anything to this franchise. But that’s just my opinion 🫡

I'm afraid of Chapter 5. With every new movie, the stakes are raised more and more. The expectations are getting higher and higher, and right now, the franchise is in a good place. Of course, Chad Stahelski and Keanu and everyone else are awesome, but I'm not sure how they'll bring John back from the dead. He looked pretty bad.

John wick 4 is 3 John wick movies in 1. The first movie is an awesome Japanese style Wick film, the second is John rejoining his family in Germany, then the third movie is John Wick in Paris non stop fighting to kill his mark. Maybe this is the normal 3 act structure but I like seeing it as 3 movies because each act you’re so engrossed in what’s going on, by the end I genuinely forget how great the opening is

What I find about John Wick franchise which sets it apart from other action flicks is it's use of location in general . Every location has a very futuristic vibe for example the glass museums , High end nightclubs , beautiful church etc which really feels like John is taking on an ancient force which goes beyond anyone's comprehension . Every other action movie just uses generic set locations such as Hotels , warzones , filthy alleyways etc which makes them by the books and hitting checkmarks . Even the final boring conversation between Akira and John was unique due to the use of the Subway and the lighting . These are signs of a great filmmaker

In the third movie he gets tossed off the balcony of the Continental and bounces of multiple hard surfaces, but still survives to make it to the Bowlery King. In the fourth movie he gets tossed off yet another balcony in the Berlin night club, and also gets up after about ten seconds and shrugs it off. In Paris, he gets hit by about three cars in a row and it barely affects him. On top of that, he falls all the way down the stairs and even gets his back slammed against a lamp post, but apparently he also shrugs that off quite quickly and doesn't affect him when fighting up the stairs with Caine and fighting him in the duel after.

My only gripe with this film is that the old rules stated that the 2nd person picked for a duel would also unlive if the one that picked them were to lose but I'm also not mad that they didn't do that to a legend like Donnie, maybe it's because he made the annoying french guy say that he would get pardoned once it was over but it's still breaking the rules (and the old ones too which should be an ever bigger no no). Maybe there's some fine print to it idk...
