Bluebird chicks undergo several key stages of development when inside the nest. They hatch and emerge from their eggs, develop flight feathers and then fledge the nest. Parents work tirelessly to feed and protect them during this period.
This nest box in Virginia, USA, saw the arrival of four beautiful blue-coloured eggs during the Spring breeding season. All four eggs hatched however, one of the chicks was lost early on. It’s not uncommon to lose a chick or two in a nest. There are several reasons why this may happen, but the parents will only feed chicks they know are going to survive. By around day seven, their eyes start to develop, and flight feathers will emerge by day twelve.
Male Bluebird chicks can be identified by bright blue coloured wingtips, which are not present in females. By day fifteen, the three chicks fledged this nest, and parents continued to provision them outside for a short while after.
