Astonishing Reasons Why Some Birds Lay So Many Eggs

Some bird species lay a large number of eggs compared to others. Blue Tits and Great tits are among the few that can lay up to eighteen in a single breeding cycle. However, the typical clutch ranges from between eight and twelve.
It may seem strange that some species lay so many eggs. But these birds have a hidden secret as to why this happens. Most may lay two, four or even six eggs, but some can lay up to eighteen. The mortality rate for Blue Tit and Great chicks is rather large, and two-thirds of them won’t make it past the first year. Lack of food and predation are often cited as reasons for this. Laying many eggs increases the chances of the species’ survival in the long run.

0:33 Wow 13 eggs 😮. I know tits and chickadees have high rates of predation, so they lay more eggs and have multiple broods a season to make up for the losses. They also don't live very long so they maximize the chance when they get it. 1:38 it looks like all 13 at least made it to this size, a lot of hard work for both parents. They would have been making over 300 food drops a day to keep them all fed. Getting them past the early days where starvation and exposure is a real high risk. Now its mostly predators they have to avoid. People installing very sturdy nest boxes with a very small entry pretty much will keep them safe, the birds using a natural cavity don't have the luxury of having an opening only big enough for their species to get in.
