    I had one of these back in the day. You use the steel flywheel for 27 turn motors, and aluminum for modified motors. Had a small old laptop we lugged to the track to run it. Back at the house, we would have a printer connected as well. Also had the competition electronics turbo 30 dyno. Had the infrared printer that worked with it as well, and took both to the track. Also had the turbo matcher from competition electronics as well. Tekin dyno, 3x victor hi-iq chargers, various other chargers as well. Victor hi-iq battery matching system as well. To power all this stuff we had 2x30A 12v supplies, a 75A 12v supply and when on the road, we had a deep cycle 12v battery to provide the surge current needed for the dyno’s (the 75a supply was tasked with running only the fandom dyno). Had some motors that had surge currents near 100a. In order to test the max rpm of a new brushless motor (they where in their infancy) that we had for our insane speed run car we used the aluminum flywheel, the 24 cell battery we built and of course the motor controller. When we hit the throttle (full), the dyno flipped over from the torque. Subsequently we held the dyno down and recorded an rpm of over 50k. I believe dyno maxed out at 50k.

    By the way, there is another place in the menus where you can compare saved files. This is the true power of the Dyno since you can see if your modifications are working. As far as the power supply, I would use a 2s battery charged to storage voltage. Also, turn off the 5v regulator and let the whole 2s voltage through. As far as how the Dyno works, it isn't too complex. The flywheel has a known moment of inertia and the Dyno measures how fast the flywheel is accelerated. Using a little math, it can back calculate the torque and power. The holes in the flywheel allow the Dyno to measure rpm by interrupting a photo eye that is placed across from a light source. This is why the flywheel sticks into the box a little bit. I am currently borrowing my friends RSR Dyno which is the predecessor to the Fantom. Software is nearly identical.

    forgot to add... it uses a small, infrared HP thermal printer. on the top of the dyno is this little nubbin, about the size of a pencil eraser. that is the IR transmitter. Sends the report out to the printer, and it report looks like a little receipt from a cash register. About 1" wide or so. Pretty cool.

    That's a nice Dyno 😮 I have the Team Orion MPM, no need for PC, but no torque and graph thing. Still enough to see if your motor will send your car to the Moon 😊 (Without load, I clocked a 9x3 at around 52000 rpm and a 8x2 at 55000+ which sent a TT02 at 70mph). I love those vintage stuff (same with a lathe). Now we have 2.4GHZ, brushless and Lipo, so much easier than 20+ years ago. At least, now, we can concentrate on running cars 😅

    Thanks for sharing this old school motor analysis tool. The torque and current measurements are very handy, most modern dyno only measures RPM. This would be a very cool portable dyno at the local RC club if you hook it up to a low-spec HIGOLEPC Mini PC using a serial to USB adapter.

    Those numbers are really bad for those motors! Your power supply running the dyno is to small. You would be surprised how many amps that thing need. We used to run them on 50 AMP power supply and that was for stock 27 turn 24 degree timing motors. For mod I would not recommend doing any lower turn then 10 you can kill the dyno. You can run the dyno on a 3s Lipo pack now a days and get about 10 runs out of the dyno. I have run that dyno on 7.2 volt nicad batteries back in the day before I got a large enough power supply. Stock motors like the Trinity PK2 would make 60 to 62 watts and the fly up time should be under 1 second.

    I probably won't run much more than a stock motor on it be honest for future videos. That 10×4 is definitely in need of a cleanup & rebuild (not even certain if it's a 10 turn arm. tbh) so I'm not surprised if the numbers are not what you would expect to see. The guy I bought it off of said he used a deep cycle 12v car battery with it. I don't really have any interest in running crazy turn motors. So if that's a better option I could use that (actually have access to them in the garage). The power supply I have is 40 amps btw. Appreciate the tips.

    Much more info with that dyno compared to the dyno I have (no pc interface). Back in the day of brushed motor tuning, there were a few dyno's on the market. I would like to compare a motor with my dyno vs your dyno using the same motor. The only thing I don't like is the metal hold down for the motor (it will mark up the can or sticker). I just would like to know if my dyno is as accurate as yours. Of course brushes, springs & timing make a huge difference in the outcome but would be cool to know. Great video man!!!!!!

    Thanks brother. The decals absolutely get marked up. Maybe I'll try some rubber in between the clamp and motor and see if it stays put in the clamp. I would assume everything number wise would be different. More than likely arbitrary numbers that just reflect the Dyno that is being used to tune on over any sort of real world data...but who knows? Might be a cool thing to try for sure!

    @@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC I could do a video with my dyno on an old Trinity Speedworks Blueprint 427 motor (would only be max rpm & watts), then send you the motor (you'll have to send it back) run it on your dyno and see if the numbers match. My dyno is an old APS Racing Dynocharger.

    @@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC Sounds like a video in the making for us. Great idea with a silver can motor, a dime a dozen. I have an old P2K-2 Pro and the spec sticker says RPM 32.953, I can tell you that it's not even close up tp 8 volts, my dyno runs from 3 volts to 8 volts or 8.5 volts.

    Can I ask a big favor? If you have them, run the Tamiya Sport Tuned Black and the new Silver and while we're at it, maybe even the Torque Tuned run in both forward and reverse for the clodbuster crowd to put the timing debate to bed.

  • @VINTAGEBACKYARDRC

    I'll take a look and see what I have. Definitely don't have the Clod motors. I think i have most of the black can sport motors from Tamiya. The Dyno only works in one direction btw.

  • @geniusanthony

    @geniusanthony

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't think I worded that very well, I can do better. The sport tune came in a black can for the longest and only recently was changed to a silver can with the same sport tune branding. The question that pops up all the time is, are the motors set with standard 0 deg timing the same as with a standard silver can 540. Meaning do they run the same speed both wired conventionally and reversed for reverse rotation? The reason this applies to Clod folks is that both axles are identical however the front is turned around so the motor is run wired in reverse. If the motor were timed, it would run faster at one axle while the other dragged.
