Brushed Motor timing, rotation, and matched pairs
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
R/C Off-road trail trucks pose a unique challenge for brushed motors. Low speed binds are frequent. To make things worse, not every truck uses the same direction of motor! Knowing your brushed motor rotation and timing is critical for proper operation.
Please note that advanced timing will make forwards faster and more efficient than reverse. If you use reverse a lot, 6 degrees advance is ideal for overall performance and longevity.

I built my first rc10 in 1990. I liked how everything was back then. Soldering lightbulbs together to drain cells. I had a shoe box full of cells that I'd match together and solder a pack up. Cleaning brushed motors, using commutator cleaning bars, timing, armature lathes. Today everything is RTR and ready to go. Back in they day people seemed more knowledgeable because you HAD to learn/do that stuff. A lot of young people today don't really seem to know/understand much (there ones that do, don't get me wrong). And it's because half of them have never even assembled a kit. They just put a battery in and turned it on.
Thanks for this, I great to see a company that’s so helpful
Having just started using brushed motors, I found this information to be very helpful. Thanks!
Very informative video John. But I just gotta say, you are the Bob Ross of RC. This was the most soothing RC video I've ever watched lol
Thank you for all that info John it was all very helpful.
Thank you thank you yesterday I was able to reverse my motor and to adjust the timing all because of your video. My bully 2 MOA Is going to perform better because of you
nice video, I was researching different effects of brushed timing to test on trolling motors but i do love my MT rc!
I have learned quite a bit in the last few years about the whole rc scene and thanks to people like John Holmes,I'm still learning something new. Thank you for the very informative videos!

Thanks! We try to cram in tech vids whenever possible. It will be much easier once the Hobby House is running full tilt.
I literally just fixed the timing on the motor and I got this notification I have been into Rc for 35 years and have never done anything with timing this video taught me a lot after I fixed the timing the motor worked flawlessly but I learned from your video that it was spinning the wrong way and so I did a 180 with the timing and now it spins correctly that just absolutely blows my mind you could do that again thank you again in case you’re interested it’s a team kinwald the dirtinator
another great video!!! lots of helpful tips, thanx again brother;)
John Holmes, awesome. I'll stop there. Good information.
Thanks John. This helped out a lot. I have the same non labled motors.
Awesome video , thanks for the time!
Nice to see some love for the Brushed motor guys. I have been running the BRXL esc's for almost 5 years. Ive been running Holmes Expert 40T, on 3s for two or three years now. I love how smooth, quiet, and dependable HH equipment is. Oh Im running the 12v servo too!!!. Wow that bad boy is no joke. Gotta love not needing BEC!!!!! Keep the videos and top shelf products coming. Thumbs-up #inholmeswetrust

Hey JRH I would love to see a video on timing a team puller motor by amp draw... I've learned a lot from watching your other 540 motors (crawlmasters) like timing and rebuilding them. I've now stepped up to team puller 500 and would love to learn how to time them for lowest amp draw. Thanks.
Also does the esc running the reverse setting effect the timing? Best video ever!!! About timing 👍🏽
Do a Christmas special and play jingle bells with motors. It's more like humming bells but I think it still works since you're playing it with motor bells.
So a friend of mine took a modified motor apart and I put it back together and everything gets EXTREMELY hot in seconds so I’m not sure if I did the timing correctly This was a great video you had no music playing while you were talking
excellent
If we set a team 500 puller motor to lowest amp draw. Then it's @ 0 degrees of timing? Do you recommend 6 degree of timing on the 400/500 puller motor also or lowest amp draw?
Holmes has excellent customer service too! It was so fast and friendly I felt weird, like I time traveled.
I watched this video and got some understanding of what you're trying to explain on reverse motor rotation I have a bully 2 moa. I went on your site to order two motors and when it got to the part where it asked me do I need reverse rotation I got confused all over again. It tells me I need to order two so do I order one and forward rotation and order the other one and reverse rotation some help would be appreciated thank you. 😵🤔😵
If I want maximum power and speed from a low turn motor in a stadium truck should I use soft brushes and firm springs?
Hello, 1st, thank you so very much for the educational videos. You make learning your products fun and entertaining. Also, learning the technical aspects of your products is invaluable and so very useful. I’m new to crawling. My question: Prefacing my question. I am an engineer from the aerospace industry, I work for an airline. All components on commercial aircraft are tested and retested for certification purposes. Regarding new aircraft, you can find many KZread videos such as the testing of the A380 wheel and brake assembly. Specifically, you will see the wheel and brake spin up testing the brake assembly to failure. Do you have the equipment to test shaft HP on one of your brushed and similar brushless motors. I would like to see a video of you spinning up the motor measuring Current Draw, Voltage Drop, Shaft torque, watts, and perhaps spinning the motor to ultimate failure. Thank you in advance! Rob-

You sound so sane in this one....that’s weird lol. 👍🏽🐒🇺🇸
Hi John! thanks a lot for this , I have a small question , my custom SCX10 has a aftermarket gear box, once i put the motor in chassis wont roll , once i remove the motor it smooth as butter , you think is it an issue on the gear box or its the motor
I like your videos i'm a beginner and I like to work with my rc (and other electric stuff like electric scooter skateboard etc) and repair or rebuilt :))) and I did not know about the timing of brushed motors :)))))) I will need to rebuild my small rc to put back 550 or 540 brushed because i keep it in parts from 1 year :)) after an stupid brushless upgrade =)) 20 or 25 amps esc and 540 brushless motor 4300kv on1:14 scale :)))
I've got a hobbywing 10/bl120 brushless esc and a Holmes 28ookv puller pro and it goes in reverse. Is there anyway to change the rotation. The esc dont have reversible programing. I installed it on a redcat gen7
Just bought a HH Tourquemaster Pro 27T from asiatees for my TRX4 Def ( boy the importation duty i payed😬), do i need to put the red lead on the negative side of the motor or will i just rotate it 180’? , how far can i advance the timing? any suggestions on the gearings as well? Many thanks in advance...
John, what is your preferred way to swap the polarity of your motor (let’s say because of SSD axle shape for an SCX10), to swap the pos and negative cables or to turn the motor end bell 180 degrees? Is there any difference between those two options? Any performance issues?

I would like to know the answer to your question. Anybody can help us? Thank you
Hey John! Thanks for these videos. They're very informative and in my case, somewhat of a refresher... I ran semi pro in the 80's to mid 90's.I have a question... Back in the day, we used to put "socks" over our Endbells, secured around the can with a rubber band or a zip tie. Kept larger debris out of our Motors. This is a bit of a question from the last video I watched about running in water.... I was wondering, would that old trick help our Rigs today, especially when going through water?? The way I see it, it won't keep everything out, but it should keep out the bigger chunks, that can jam up Brushes and Bearings...What do you think?Carmine 🚂

That would certainly help. I prefer to just run sealed can motors though. I don't like getting water into expensive ones.

I remember those foam "socks"!! I think they would HELP, at least keeping the larger junk out of your Motor (I'm assuming Brushed). However, watertight sounds a lot better to me. ;)

Since my puller pro 3500 v2 is running in reverse rotation on my trx4, should I mess with the motor timing on it?
I have no thinking cap...OR wisdom teeth!!!!XD
Im building a electric bike, and i have a question about the rotation of the motor. I've built my diy bike, but the motors spinning the wrong direction. How can I reverse the direction of the motor? I have it hooked up to a 2 pin rocker switch and a 22.2v 1400mah battery and it all works, but how would i have to change it if i wanted to make it go the opposite direction? Its going clockwise now, but i want it to go counter clockwise. If i swap the connectors on the motor ( like connect positive motor wire to negative battery wire and negative motor wire to positive battery wire ), would that work?
I have a JConcepts 13T adjustable timing motor but the end bell refuses to turn. What do I do?
Hi friend. My Hackmoto V2 13T motor rotation direction label says counterclockwise. But my Vanquish VS4-10 Phoenix crawler transmission rotates in reverse when pulling forward in the transmitter. Is it ok to just reverse the motor wires without damaging the motor to make the transmission move forward when applying throttle in the transmitter? I also ordered your Torquemaster 540 35T motor. Thanks in advance.

I don’t understand timing…I have a custom tamiya 1/14 scale semi…I have a 80T motor in it that pretty quiet…only thing make noise is the 3 speed…I love the torque and everything but not fast enough…if I adjust timing will it be a lil faster?

peak torque will be around 30t range for a 540. this also increases brush life compared to faster motors.

So let me get this right on the puller 500 and 400s the only way to reverse rotation is by reversing the wires. I have two and I'm about to put them on a motor on axel.
Great video! This will be a life saver for moa guys 👍 I'm building a dual 2200 kV Axial dragster and I've been researching... It looks like two ESC /two motors is the most reliable setup. I've seen a theory where they would use one ESC with two sensor motors. The first motor was connected with the sensor wire and the second motor operated sensorless .. stating that the first motor would give the ESC feedback to give both Motors the proper power.. my Layman's Theory is that I know my RPMs won't be any higher but using two Motors will help share the workload so I can use higher gearing just giving me incredible wheel speeds for hydroplaning vertical pit wall climbing Tire ripping speed on 6s because I'm also a purveyor of power breaking parts😯 so my question is if I used to ESCs with two Motors can I bench run them and adjust the timing through Castle Creations link to try to help out with synchronicity with a rpm gauge? Thanks 👍

this is probably your ESC. reverse your radio channel and reverse the motor wires and try again.
Wraith 1.9 is also reverse like its big brother?
Hi John, I recently purchases a 540 35T sensored motor. Out of Box the rotation was faster in forward direction and slower in reverse. The current draw from a 3.6V 1900mAh Ni-Cd in the factory setting was Forward-1.06A & Reverse-1.04A. So I tries to advance the timing slowly by 6 degrees and the current rose to Forward-1.08A & reverse-1.06A, at 12 degrees the forward was 1.2A & reverse- 1.18A. Finally at the third notch(marking) the current had risen drastically to 1.72A at forward direction and 1.68A for reverse(and speed reduced too a lot). Would this increase in current draw impact the life of the motor significantly?
@HolmesHobbies
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, increases in current will affect motor life, more significantly past 12 degrees of timing. The lower the better for brushes.
@salinbabu6992
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. So, currently I've kept it at 6 degrees. Should I go back to the factory setting for longer brush life?
what timing is best on brushed motor? leave it at 0 are...? Besides the 0 mark what is the next setting number?
@HolmesHobbies
6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the rpm that the motor is spinning. For a crawler that is normally close to zero RPM, 6 degrees of timing is a very good setting. Each little mark represents 12 degrees.
So to reverse the puller 500 i need to take out the screws turn 180 degrees and put it back together?
@HolmesHobbies
3 жыл бұрын
Just flip the wires on that one. It's set to zero which might not be easy to get back unless you minimize amp draw with a meter
So revisiting this because was doing maintenance and forgot the original research and didn’t take a picture before the maintenance 🤣. Opposite of rotation looking from front aka “advanced”. Because on my Trx4 nothing “sounds” advanced. Maybe because used brushes.
is this motor can turn reverse ? im makinn rc tank and im looking for this motor, i want to drive this motor normal and reverse . how i can ?

I don't really get it. Can't you just change it on the controller? What you are saying it isn't good for the motor to run backwards to much?

Johan Eriksson the timing of brushed motors is handled by brush placement, and not controller programming. having retarded timing will wear the motor very fast.

The light is arbitrary. And yes, typically pair matching will have reversed rotations.
why is the motor more noisey from one direction to another direction
@HolmesHobbies
7 жыл бұрын
Ric Gruber good question! You are hearing brush noise, which is common on stand up brush rebuildable motors without brush dampers (our pro handwounds have dampers). The brush seats in one direction during break in, while in reverse the brush wants to sit a little different. The sharp brush edge catches the comm gap, and makes a little noise. flipping the brush or sanding the sharp edges can help.

yes, it depends on the orientation of magnets, direction of winding, and termination style on the comm. Our standard of manufacturing puts it on the left when the timing mark is forward.
I prefer brush motor to my tamiya ferrari f104, putting brushless on it, is very uncontrollable, and wreck every part of my car.
Valeu a tentativa mais tá bem ruim a legenda kkkkk
Or is it so that you can run two motors at once
