Fantasia (1940, clip from 1990 VHS edition with Deems Taylor's real voice)

Ойын-сауық

A clip from 1990 VHS edition of Fantasia with Deems Taylor's real voice. All subsequent releases of this film use modern dubbing for his voice, due to the lack of original recording of Taylor's narration.

Just remember, for this movie's 50th Anniversary it was re-released to theaters in 1990, and then onto VHS for the first time ever in November of 1991. That is the edition where we actually hear the voice of the Master of Ceremonies and Narrator of the film, music critic Deems Taylor.

In 1947 Fantasia was cut to 115 minutes which shortened Taylor's introductions to the compositions. They were able to restored the original introductions of Taylor from the debut release including the Chimes accident, but they couldn't restore all of Taylor's dialogue, they didn't just re-dub Taylor full introductions they also re-dubbed the orchestra. The original audio elements of Taylor's introductions couldn't be fixed so they hired Veteran Voice Actor Corey Burton to re-record the dialogue. I think that Disney re-recording Taylor's introductions with Corey's voice is understandable.

So here's the story as far as I understand. When Fantasia was first released in 1940, Taylor's introductions were pretty long, and as the years went by and Fantasia was re-released again in 1947 and every release since, Walt Disney's distributer R.K.O shortened down 11 minutes of Taylor's scenes to get to songs quicker. Then when it came time to release Fantasia for home video, they wanted it to be the original cut. Only after all those years of not being in use, while the footage remained in good condition, the original audio from Taylor's extended scenes either became unusable or lost. So they had 3 choices 1. Release the shortened version with the original voice, but without the complete scenes. 2. Use whatever OG audio they had and fill in the in betweens (which there was a lot of mind you) 3. Or just redub the whole thing. Now if you're wondering, "Well why didn't they just use the audio from a VHS tape or 70mm film role?" because every release of the film on those mediums would have been the shortened versions.

The "Three Kinds of Music" bit, for some reason, is deeply-embedded into my brain and has been for my whole life. When I was a kid, I used to put on our VHS copy of this movie and pretend I was conductor Leopold Stokowski during each intro, conducting the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra.

Well, what happened was that Deems Taylor’s voice had been deemed virtually unachievable because of how badly his voice clips had deteriorated, some of his extended voice audio had been completely lost, so they had to bring in another person to voice over all of his lines.

I knew something was off about the voice in the version I grew up watching (2010 DVD release) when I watched an episode of Justice League Unlimited and heard Braniac’s voice, which sounded like “Deems Taylor’s” voice, but couldn’t have been, cause he died long before the show aired. Turned out, it was Corey Burton overdubbing Deems Taylor. For what it’s worth, Burton’s voice does a good job of keeping us excited about what we’re going to see, but I wish that Taylor’s original voice tracks hadn’t deteriorated, so we could fully see Fantasia as it was meant to be shown.

On one hand, Corey Burton's voice does do a good job portraying the professionalism and sincerity of Deems Taylor's voice, but on the other hand as most have already said in the comments the original is Deems Taylor's ACTUAL speaking voice and I understand wanting to hear the actual person speaking and not just the dubbed voice.

The restored version is longer, with more footage of Taylor, but Taylor's voice only exists in the shorter version. If they had used Taylor's voice in the longer version, you would've heard parts with his real voice and parts not. That was the reason they decided to just re-dub it entirely. We can hope they may uncover the missing Taylor voice recordings in the future and re-restore them.

The reason that they did not use the same audio master for the DVD/Blu-Ray releases as the one they used on the Laserdisc is that the LD master was the shortened version of the film. When Disney seeked to restore the length of the film to the original roadshow length, they found that the Deems Taylor audio from the missing segments had degraded significantly enough to the point where they felt an entire redubbing of him was nescessary.
