Fancy a Brew? Season 3 Episode 10 - Talking to Angus Hosking about Free Diving in the Lake District

Спорт

This is the final episode of season 3 and I talk to my mate Angus Hosking. He's a lovely bloke and fellow ginger-haired outdoorsman, who loves to free dive around the Lake District and collect discarded or lost items in and around the waterline.
We chat about the types of items he's found from iPhones to engagement rings, organised cleanup problems, talking at Kendal mountain festival and how to practice breath-holding safely to be able to free dive.

The “mammalian dive reflex” is an instinctual reflex that causes the respiratory system to slow down, and tells you to hold your breath, when you dip your face underwater. On scuba, it causes you to take deeper, slower breaths. It also slows the circulatory rate.

The struggle of trying to get into and out of an open-cell neoprene suit without destroying is a special hell. 😂 I have a really nice 5mm Yamato open-cell neoprene suit, and while it is super warm to wear, far warmer than any other 5mm closed cell suits I have, it’s so difficult to get into and out of, I never wear it. I’ve only worn it a few times because of the difficulty, and I’m also always so nervous I’m going to possibly rip it open just trying to take it off. 😂😭🤷🏼‍♂️

SWB is the exact reason I won’t ever get into free diving. I’ve read it’s not good to hyperventilate prior to the dive either, as it’s what leads to SWB. As you dive deeper, same with scuba diving, the increased ATA also increases the Pp of the gas in the lungs. Your body metabolizes only a small amount (roughly 6%) of the O2 per respiratory cycle, and since the Pp is higher while you’re deeper, it doesn’t become hypoxic until you come back up. In the 0 to 10m range, that sudden drop in pressure as the ATA is halved, and by that point you’ve already metabolized enough O2 to make it hypoxic, is exactly what causes SWB. The suppression of the CO2 reflex that tells you that you need to breath (by hyperventilating prior to the dive) leads you to falsely believe you can go further and dive deeper.
