Fancy a Brew? Season 3 Episode 6 - Jessica Irwin Maritime Archaeologist and Diver from the US of A

This week I chat with Jessica Irwin, a military mom, a maritime archaeologist, an environmentalist and explorer. She loves to explore ideas, places, and new ways of doing things.
She says "I am an archaeologist but that doesn't mean I just dig in the dirt. I also dive under the water, visit archives, and write. I look at cultural material to learn about the past."
She loves maps and making maps. "Honestly maps are what brought me to archaeology and love for history. I have worked doing GIS for years and I am happy to use those skills to further archaeology and to make what we do more accessible to people."
She believes that it is our responsibility to teach people about archaeology and history, "ALL archaeology is public archaeology."
Most of her career has been working in organizations that are non-profits. That means wearing a bunch of hats. Archaeologists are bad at many things that are not archaeology!

Outstanding conversation. Wreck penetration requires many of the same rules used in cave diving, and is arguably just as dangerous for both similar reasons and completely different ones. Wrecks are in a constant state of deterioration, and besides sharp edges, are always potentially deadly if they happen to collapse while inside. Your bubbles can be the very thing that causes an overhead to break free and fall on top of you. Lines must be used to find the exit, and improper tie-offs can lead to a cut line, causing you to get lost, even if you obey the rule to never leave the line. Wrecks are dark, and you should never enter without lights, but not just one. Just like cave diving, you should have three at least. And buoyancy, trim, and proper finning are paramount... If you can’t even stay put without moving, you could become the very hazard that kills you if you enter a wreck. And let’s not forget proper gas management and dive planning for wrecks... And finally... Spatial Disorientation. Wrecks can be huge, a maze, and cause you to easily become lost and confused. Visual illusions such as artificial horizons, structural illusions, size-distance illusions, altered planes of reference, and vestibular illusions such as the leans and the coriolis effect, can lead to confusion, disorientation, incapacitation, and death.
