Look at chronic illness forums and see how many women are told that their health problems are just their period, depression, or failure of character. They may not call it "hysteria" anymore, but women are medically gaslighted all the time. Men are too, but not near as often.

Well, this is why women did what they were told for so long. Their parents could send them to places like this or worse if they disobeyed and it was completely normal and accepted. We didnt have rights for a long time and it really shows how scary it was for us and how dismissed we were when former male slaves got to vote before we did--especially given the racial climate of the time. But then again women have been slaves since the beginning in many cultures. We could go away to one of these horrible asylums just for having simple emotions. I feel awful for the women who had no control whatsoever over their lives.

Apart from the spiritual aspect, all of this stuff actually happened to women. If you spoke out or didn't act as you were told you would be declared crazy or that you suffer from hysteria. Not only women were victims of this abuse but many people with mental disorders were given a place in these asylums. It's insane to think that the sweet kids I work with could have ended up in such a situation if they had been born in that time

Wrong, she wasn't at a friends funeral at the beginning of the film. She said she was at Victor Hugo's funerals. He is one of the greatest French authors. (he wrote the Misérables and so much more) His death was a big big event for French people, especially young people. Lot of people came to say goodbye to his genius mind. In the film, we can see many time that Eugénie love poetry, and we can suppose he was one of her favorite as she read some of his works later in the film.

sadly, I’ve learned that psych wards even today, are rife with the same amount of harshness and S-xual assault, pain, over medications, and misconduct of mental Patients. If you do some online research, there are a plethora of people coming out and talking about their stories of the terrible things that have happened to them. I really hope some change will come to those areas in every countries system, because mental health isn’t something you just throw away for others to deal with. That’s just awful. And I’m terribly sad that life is just screwed up like that.

Well since it was all horse carriages, no cars, we can correctly assume this took place before the 1900s, and back then psychology was just a pseudoscience. They didn’t know what they were doing as it was a whole new branch of research, and intentional or not new science will always bring new casualties. What’s important are the further casualties it prevents. Still kinda f**led up sh*t tho

Bro I have a suggestion for u. There is a malayalam (an Indian language) called Atbhutha Dweep. The movie says a story about an Island full of dwarf men and normal women who are unaware of the outside world. The film take a turn when some survivors of a naval helicopter crash tries to swim into the island and these people kill them stating that they are monsters. But at the same time some hid from there and escaped into the temple in the woods. It's an interesting movie. I think it does deserve a recap
