Re: Stunts at the Academy awards: Can’t you say the same about Visual Effects awards? How does the average Academy voter know what’s CG and what isn’t? And if they have no concept of what a visual effects designer does, how can they accurately judge its difficulty and execution?

VFX houses provide VFX breakdowns to academy voters. Stunt teams would do something similar with their "stunt viz." As it is, they already record rehearsal and cut it together with music like it is in the film. Put that side by side with the final product, and there you go.

They really need to find a way to add a stunt category to the academy awards. Just because it's hard and they don't know right now, it simply isn't fair. Stunt work is so very important to film making. A committee can be put together to try to figure it out. It can be done.

When it comes to Academy Awards for stunts, I just think it would have to be judged by the stunt work of an entire film. I don't know how you would be able to nominate individual stunt workers, but you can nominate stunt coordinator teams or fight choreographers. There would be a stunt branch with stunt coordinators and choreographers who would nominate films with the best stunt work. Makes sense to me anyway.

They could nominate movies for the stunt Oscar, and submit a 20 minute reel of the stunts filmed for the movie without CGI. If needed, they could then submit the final ou 44:40 t of the film.

Movie ending twists are awesome for each viewers experience. Last, Season 2 of Shogun should follow the characters we have and not the next generation just yet. I don't believe its overly complicated to add the category and decide the criteria for it. They could/should adopt the method that the GRAMMYs/Recording Academy uses nowadays. I sit on the board of my local Recording Academy chapter in DC. One of the major changes that has happened in recent years is that we as musicians no longer get to vote on every category/genre. We choose three genres and then vote within those areas. This forces us to focus on our areas of expertise. It's part of the reason that, Killer Mike and Nas won best rap albums in recent years. It's less of a popular contest and is decided not only by random professionals but people who know that particular area of the business. My point is it doesn't need to be voted on by all members. Let the stunt people decide the criteria and be the main people or the only ones to vote on it. There could be a digital ballot connected to the members account that decides what categories they can vote on based on their skill set and resumés, which I'm assuming is part of how they qualified to become voting members in the first place. Just my two cents. Fan of the show since 2018. Keep up the great work.

i think a really good way to do a stunt category is to not merit it based on how difficult or dangerous it was for the stunt crew to achieve, but on how great it looks in the final cut of the film. therefore, since most stunts today are generally a mix of both practical effects and vfx, i think films that use full vfx stunts should still qualify. so for example, tom cruise on the side of a plane for mission impossible is a great LOOKING stunt regardless of if he did it in real life or on a soundstage. just my thoughts 👍🏽

Maybe for the stunt category, the requirement would be that you have to submit a making-of video of a particular stunt submitted for oscar consideration. That way they can see the actual stunt. Mission Impossible showed the motorcycle jump and John wick 4 showed the stairs fight.

No other category in the Oscars requires Academy members to do additional homework aside from just watching the movie. Then the award would just be presented to whatever movie put together the flashiest and best 25 minute sizzle reel rather than for actual stunts.

My brother in Cinema, my film-lovin’ brother… it’s not that hard! Your arguments are: • Academy voters are not aware of what goes into any given stunt. • How do you compare different stunts to one another? • Integrity of showcasing stunt work. I think your first argument is an odd one to me. When it comes to technical awards, I doubt many actors or producers who vote know the breadth of what goes into cinematography, or sound recording, mixing, and editing, or even screenwriting-screenwriters don’t write movies, they write screenplays. These screenplays go from draft to draft, and after a shooting script is completed, there are often changes made while filming. Yet, studios submit these ridiculously polished final drafts, that eerily resemble the released film, to voters as part of their FYC campaign (I jokingly refer to them as “editor’s drafts”). It should also be asked “what is good writing?” Most people colloquially refer to good dialogue as “good writing,” but that is merely the tip of the iceberg. Maestro was aimless, about nothing, poorly structured, with vapid characters, but it did have an aggressive FYC campaign, and, I guess, “good dialogue.” See also VFX: most digital effects are invisible, yet every year, VFX studios release breakdown reels of their work as part of the film’s FYC campaign. This is a small gesture to give voters a taste of what goes into their craft, and demonstrates their role in telling a story. Also, the Academy historically awards films with more subtle or subdued VFX (Interstellar winning over Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla Minus One winning over The Creator, Ex Machina winning over Star Wars VII, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Martian, etc.). Besides, by simply watching a film, the viewer is never 100% sure what is entirely a prop, and what is CGI, and where the line is between the two. You simply believe the effect or you don’t. So, I think the biggest factor in legitimizing a Best Stunts Oscar is making it a part of a film’s FYC campaign. While shooting the film, the stunt team could document the journey of what goes into a handful of stunts and release it as a breakdown reel as a small gesture of showcasing what they contribute to the story. Your second point brings to question your core belief that “film is entirely subjective.” How do you compare a comedy script against a horror script? How do you compare one musical score over another; do you judge the music itself, or how it is implemented into the film? If you think Oppenheimer had better cinematography than Killers of the Flower Moon, do you think the full IMAX aspect ratio is superior 2.39:1 widescreen? It just depends on how the element serves the narrative! Likewise, stunts should serve the same purpose. One stunt may be more technically impressive than another, but it could lack the intended effect on the story. Your final argument about the integrity of a stunt category is your best one. However, I think that relies on the stunt community. If they had their own branch of the Academy they could be the ones to establish what the rules are if they were given the platform to do so. I honestly think this is where the most positive potential lies! If there was incentive for stunt teams to revolutionize their craft, the community could establish their own checks and balances that we wouldn’t think to! Anyways, that’s just my 2¢.

Long time fan, I think the Oscars has a time length problem …I think the categories need to change…to me audiences only love what they see ( actors/ directors)and what music they hear( popular songs) that is mainly the actors and the directors everything else is below the line talent…so let’s stop pretending to force people to watch these bloated award shows… I believe a great way to change the format is to have all categories get their own time to shine, but not all be televised…and during a two hr show, they rotate categories that get televised….one yr, you get the sound category, then the following yr the special effects category ….the main difference is the foundation category that are in the show are the above the line categories…then have live performances of popular music from songs in popular music and only 2-3 below the line categories are cycled in every yr….fill up the commercials with movies and tv show people want to be the first to see…that will make cause the Oscars to return to being MUST SEE TV…. You want this show to be SuperBowl levels…people will watch!

Free education or health insurance? Literaly the easiest thing to solve. Dwfund your military budget, pump the health and education budgets. There is literaly no war activity in america since civil war, and yet you spent trilions dolars every year on military. Reason? Destabilising other world regions for your political goals. But americans will rather have that, and refuse to go to hospital untill dying, and leaving bills for the next 5 generations to solve... anyway... good show. This got me rattled😅😅
