The Charger had kicked the pipebomb into the spawning area, which it took the infected longer to chase it and for it to kill a few of them instead.

The real reason it was a fail is that the plan is to bounce off the common infected to skip the horde event by going over a building. The pipebomb moving prevented a common bounce

Anthony speedrun for 8 years on Last of Us. For me it’s been 3 years, but for Last of Us 2, I can’t say the exact number of hours. But it’s above 300 hours.
