Fabricating Radiator and Oil Cooler Mounts and Shroud For the Subaru Rally Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The front end on the rally car is finally coming together!
We have all the bars completed and in this video we mounted almost everything that is needed on the front end. I'm really happy with how the radiator and the oil cooler fit and tuck away giving a lot more clearance for the engine, which should make it much easier to work on the front of the engine.Pretty soon we'll complete all the fabrication on the front end and we can move on to all the other items that need attention on the car!

Since you planned on relocating the battery, I've seen old WRC cars that would mount an oil cooler where the battery was, use the hood vent as an air relief, and then find a way to get air to the cooler. That way it's 110% protected. If I ever relocate my battery, I plan to do that for sure.

That’s a good idea, but I think it’s staying where it is haha. The fuse box and the air box I’m making will take up the space that you’re talking about. I’ll definitely have to come up with something to protect it though.

That shot from the top of the hood definitely shows how little room you are working with. I’ll quit bitching about my 60x40 shed getting cramped now. Much respect bro.

Haha yeah the 19x19 gets taken up pretty quick with a car on the middle. I’m looking forward to moving to a larger shop hopefully next year! A 60x40 would be amazing but it’s pretty hard finding houses with a shop

This is pretty badass. It's inspiring me to want to build my WRX/ STI for off-road at least.

Hey, I wanted to thank you for the main hoop tutorial, I got it done and followed your directions. Worked great. I meant to message you on FB but couldnt find you.

I got your message, I’m glad it helped you out since the main hoop can be pretty tricky and cause you to waste a bunch of material. What car are you caging?

Hey, I know the car is mostly done at the time I comment. But I'd recommend bending g and welding in a bar along the wheel tubs where it was cut, right in front of the strut tower. From the frame up to the tube you added in up top. But it all looks cool though. Really ljke you showing us this. There's not much rally building content on KZread

I’m thinking about adding a bar that I think you’re talking about, I’ll see if I can come up with something later on. I did run a bar across to both strut towers and tied it into the firewall already

I’m not a big fan of nutserts/rivnuts unless it’s not that important. The weld nuts I use work really well and have a lot of material to weld them on to the tabs.

I've seen tube front ends a lot on drift cars. I'm curious on how many rally cars run a similar setup? I can't find any rules for ARA that disallow this. Just wondering how common this is?

  • @DirtyGarage

There really isn’t any guidelines from any of the sanctioning bodies, if you run in an open class such as NA4wd, open 2wd, or open 4wd then almost everything is allowed. I’ve seen quite a few cars with tube front ends but most people run stock front ends so there’s less modification needed.

Hey I'm curious about that grey box of hardware you used for the oil cooler, where'd you get that?

I got it on Amazon, they’re just grade 10.9 metric flange bolts in m6, m8, m10, and m12 sizes. It’s super convenient to buy them in bulk because they can get really expensive buying handfuls at a time at a local store. I think it was 89.99 for like 20 of each bolt in different lengths. Here's a link if you're interested amzn.to/3lY7D8X, I think the price went up some since I purchased it but it's still a great deal compared to a hardware store
