CLASS DESCRIPTION:
How To Make Fabric Paper:
I think we should lobby for 5 seasons instead of 4. The fifth one should be called Back-to-School and not just because the kids are getting back into a routine. It's the time of year you walk into any office supply or discount store and the front aisles are filled and overflowing with new, delicious, colorful art supplies. Can't you just smell all the artsy goodness when you enter the store? It can wake up your senses as much as evergreens and candy canes!
Now, I'm sure the creators of these bins of goodness don't label them as art supplies, but nevertheless, that's what I call them and I stock up because the prices are super!
I love taking advantage of back-to-school sales to replenish my studio with kids' construction paper and anything else I use a lot like glue sticks, pens, crayons and composition notebooks. I especially love white or other light colors of construction paper because I can do so much with it, like make my own Fabric Paper. (And, if it's not school-supply time of year, that doesn't stop me from finding construction paper because it's available year round.)
Have you ever tried making Fabric Paper? It's probably more fun than you should be allowed to have. Fabric Paper is simply a combination of paper and fabric put together in such a way that the characteristics of both are strengthened.
By using a few basic supplies from office supply and fabric stores you can create beautiful Fabric Paper that people will drool over. (Just watch that they don't drool ON it. LoL!)
After playing with colorful shapes of oil pastels on paper, you'll learn how to turn construction paper into a beautifully pliable, stitchable Fabric Paper. It's an amazing, yet incredibly simple technique that doesn't use messy glue nor does it require hours of drying time. BONUS!
Although Fabric Paper isn't washable, you can use it for all kinds of fun projects like journal covers, greeting cards or post cards, for wallhangings or art quilts, bookmarks, and you can even make your own charms and beads. I bet you'll think of lots more ways to use your awesome fabric-paper, too. Using construction paper is definitely not just for kids!
Joining the class is really easy. Just click the button in the video and I'll see you in class.

    Your description of looking at where you want to sew is just like when learning how to drive and the instructor tell you to look at where you want to go and that way you can thread a needle while driving. LOL So both driving and sewing use each others analogies. HILARIOUS. That has to be one of the BEST tutorial I have seen in a very long time and this technique would actually make for the best Art Journal cover EVER. I know what cover I am making for my upcoming Art Journal. TFS your astounding talent with us, it is much appreciated.

    Barb, great video. I learned a lot and you gave me the answer to how to move forward into the next level with my art. I am a Chilean artist based in Dallas and I do paint on newsprint follow the same process you do with the iron and when I'm done I pat the paper onto a canvas. and. the result is amazing. Your suggestion about the transparent fabric I will definitely add into the canvas for a new look. Thank You! / romanho

    Hi Linda. I love combining all sorts of paper and fabric together. I, too, love the versatility. I usually use gray or tan thread in the bobbin unless a specific color of thread like red or white is required. You can always do hand stitching on the fabric-paper. I've done that and love that effect, too. Thanks for watching!

Anyway, can you please offer some suggestions on lining the wrong side of the fabric paper....I'm stuck on that part and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.....Deb

  • @BarbOwenDesigns

    @BarbOwenDesigns

    +Deborah Ring Truthfully, most often I leave the inside without lining because I like the texture of the stitching. You could also add a layer of cotton fabric as a lining before stitching around the edge to hold the pieces together.

    This looks like fun! It would be great to do this with a heavy, cotton watercolor paper, fabric paint, and/or fabric medium with acrylic paint... Then you could wash it! You could use a wax-based, washable "crayon" as well for the resist too. VERY inspiring class! The info on stitches & fusible webbing is great too! I've never heard of the circle stitching foot or attachment for the sewing machine before. I'm going to have to find your tutorial on that as well! That would make a fun design for quilting too! Making interlocking circles on a quilt, you could make some incredible designs that I've done on paper (flowers, tile designs, geometric designs, etc.) that I've never seen on a quilt! Great video! I've been thinking about sewing my first quilt, and wondered what kind of design I would do for the quilting part... Now I have a lot more possibilities! Thank you! It's amazing to bring together ideas from different places, then put them all together! Great video! Seems I need to pick out some fabric now! Hmmm!

    I adored your tutorial on turning paper into fabric. I sew and could see myself making these "fabrics", and then embroidering a poem on them, but I'm lacking the vision on how to mount it so it can be hung on the wall. I think that would make a nice gift. Any ideas?

  • @BarbOwenDesigns

    Hi Terri. The finished fabric-paper is pretty sturdy so you might just fuse another fabric to the back and stitch around the edges. Or, you could bind the edges as for a quilt. Another idea would be to frame the piece. Loads of ideas. ;-) Thanks so much for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. First, I like what you do. Very clever. You remind me of me, I love to work with many different mediums. I make FP with muslin and paintable textured wallpaper and that is really nice, I love texture. I started your construction paper technique yesterday and It was fun, but I had problem getting paint just right I got impatient I guess. I did a few with paint then decided to try the Tumble dye by tulip. I thought since it is watery and would not have to dilute it. Just spray on and play. It turned out great, beautiful with the oil pastels (I used water soluble, but did not cause problem with the dye). I had a couple bottles of the glitter tumble dye and it was great. Today I am going to turn it into fabric. I am going to try my Daler Rowney pearlescent acrylic inks on a batch in a day or too. I made 12 sheets yesterday, my husband saw me using the pastels and when I started dying them he said he was wondering why I was doing kid art earlier. He liked how it turned out. I had been making fabric paper my way the last few weeks and he understood when I said what I was going to do with them. Thanks for the videos, you have filled my head with Ideas. I do not do videos really but put one of fabric beads I have made for years. They are hard when I am done, if interested in seeing them here is the video link.kzread.info/dash/bejne/h42KmJKGfLTWdLQ.html Fast forward through it, it is a bit long and not a how to just photos. My forte is definitely not videos. Yours are well done. Thanks again for your sharing your wonderful art.

  • @BarbOwenDesigns

    @BarbOwenDesigns

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ruth. I'm not sure what you mean by marble paper. The oil pastels add color to the paper as well as acting as a resist for the acrylic paint washes. You could try inexpensive kids crayons instead of the oil pastels. Thanks for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. Stay Creative!

    Hi, Barb: This is a gold mine l found!! Wow! Thank you a million times over for all the work you put into this video. You are a wonderful teacher. I enjoy the slow pace as l learn so much more when l don't feel rushed. Question: can l use regular thread or quilting thread, or is it vital that l use embroidering thread? Statement: Years ago when my son was in Cub Scouts his den made ( or mothers made ) vests out of brown, heavy grocery bag. We opened it up into one big piece. Then we crumbled it up, smoothed it out, over & over &'over until it felt like actual fabric. Then we cut out the simple pattern of back & 2 front pieces. Then we punched holes with a regular hole punch, all around the neck, armholes, & the rest of raw edges. From there we threaded large eyed needles with yarn. Then we did a button hole stitch, following all those holes. I used turquoise yarn & it looked great as any bright color would look on that "brown fabric"! Then the kids glued on wooden beads, popcorn kernels, pumpkin seeds and anything else they could think of. They were beautiful and so sturdy!! They learned an Indian dance & performed at a big " pow wow" for parents & friends of the community. Do you know that vest still hangs in his boyhood closet. Kids have borrowed it for costumes many times & it's still holding up. That was so much fun!! Oh yeah, they also painted Indian like symbols on the feats. This video reminded me of that time many years ago( about 43 years). Anyway, l loved this technique & l can't wait to try it. All l need is white construction paper & l'm off to the races! FYI: l'm almost sure Hobby Lobby has the construction paper in packages of different colors- - all one color per package. It's probably not the Big size you started with but it would still work. Thank you again for teaching us all a new "vice" to keep us from doing laundry or housework! Lol!

    Hi Katherine! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. I love using the machine embroidery thread for this technique because it shows well when stitched. Regular thread will probably work, but won't be as visible. If you use quilting thread, be sure that it is machine quilting thread. Using hand quilting thread in a machine can cause problems for your machine. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the cub scout vest and that it's still in use all these years later! What a special garment filled with memories! And, it's my pleasure to keep you from housework. If I don't have time to do it, you shouldn't either. Lol! Stay Creative!
