F86 Sabre Jet Fighter Walk-Around w/ Steve Hinton | PART I | Planes of Fame
The F-86 Sabre was scheduled for a photo flight a few weeks ago. Steve Hinton walks us around and explains various parts of the aircraft during his pre-flight. Part II coming soon includes cockpit footage of the flight.
Planes of Fame is currently closed due to COVID-19 and had to cancel our favorite event, our annual airshow. We are in for turbulent times ahead. If you are a WWII aircraft enthusiast or someone who appreciates aviation history and would like to support Planes of Fame Air Museum, you can:

I am a US Navy Veteran Schooled, Trained AMH (Aviation Metals, Structures, Hydraulics/Flight Controls, Landing Gear/Brake Systems Mechanic/Technician, for 7 years, 9 months of active duty. I still know how to FIX aircraft from that Real World Class Practical experience and have used the Skills and learned more advanced concepts when I went to work for Lockheed Aerospace / Space Systems Division. Every time a Pilot show me parts of an Aircraft I still have that passion, the high pressures, pneumatic, hydraulic valves, cables, servo motors, and that Life Experience made it easy for me to get a Mechanical Engineering degree with a minor in Physics.
This is not an airplane, it's a work of art, wow!

Agree, this plane is a work of art.
Steve in the 1980’s my wife and I used to grunt work at the museum. We’d sweep, clean glass cases, etc. I believe you had a newborn daughter at the time. Loved those big band dances where most people showed up in WWll uniforms.
Four planes I want. One: Sopwith Camel. Two: P 51 Mustang, Three: F86 Sabre. Four: F4 Phantom.

That's my wish list also..!
Thank you so much. My Grandpa flew these in Korea and always talked about what a great plane she was
To the staff, pilots, spokesperson, and all other employees of Plane of Flame: Amazing effort and work on the aircraft! That is... a BEAUTIFUL AIRCRAFT! And that is an honor to clean and fly F-86 Sabre!
i have loved this aircraft for 60yrs. great walk around steve.
Fascinating airplane, particularly the details of the hydraulic system and the chem-milled wing box. I had no idea those technologies dated to the 1940s.
It's cool seeing plane in museum but one that is still flying is awsome
I was on Okinawa in 1955, these were parked along the runway at Kadena Air base, saw one go down, crashed in the Marine Corp Bombing range
The prettiest jet plane, ever!
AS a teen living El Segundo, CA next to the LA Airport I would watch these F86 Sabre's take off regularly as they were made in El Segundo. Really a cool sight as a teen. Noise but exciting. Thanks for sharing this video.
When I was stationed at Pt. Mugu in the early 90's they still had a half dozen or so F-86F's, some were in the Japanese Blue Impulse colors. It was interesting to watch them enter the break, the intakes make a weird howl as they bend it around the corner and start slowing down, my comment to a co-worker was " flashback to Korea". Unfortunately they were all gone within a year, replaced by F-4S's.
Beautiful silver fighter!
Thats an incredible looking Saber. Such a fantastic design. Love its earlier family of the Fury also. Wonderful Aircraft of those times. Thanks for that walk around introduction. Wonderful metal bird.👍🦘🐨🇭🇲✌️
Steve could narrate a slow motion, paint-drying video, and I’d still be fascinated at all the detail. The F-86; proof, as if it were needed, that aerial magic exists. CAVU 😎👍
This plane is the 57 chevy hot rod of aircraft.
Beautiful aircraft !
Excellent! thank you for this otherwise unattainable content!
Saw it fly again on Saturday. Great flight and Steve was the pilot
Great pilot & Chino Air Museum is fantastic
The F86 was such a great looking aircraft!
Wyatt Fuller had one (Canadair F86, N86FS) based at KHKY. I worked next to the airport and live quite close too. I saw it fly numerous times. Loud, fast and very aerobatic. It was a beautiful airplane. At Airventrue 2005 he won reserve grand champion in the post WWII category. Sadly Wyatt was killed in an attempt to abort a take off when he was leaving for Oshkosh in 2006. He was unable to stop the plane. It went off the end of the runway, struck the localizer antenna, continued down the hill, through the fence and came to rest in the road.
Steve - Great video and miss you all
Edgar Schmued designed some iconic aircraft, didn't he? P-51, F-86, F-5, even the T-38--all impactful and stunning in their own right.
Great walk around,thank you🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
When I had the great fortune to meet Mr. Hinton back in May, He said that this is his favorite.
My great uncle flew the Sabre during the Korean War. Stationed at K-13 (suwon air base)
I’ve always thought the F86 is the best looking fighter. It looks so purposeful.
F86 is my favorite jet
A work of art ❤
Great! I want to see a video about his brother, the f86D
What a beautiful plane.
Muy buena exhibición del F86 Sabre, un superavión, héroe de Corea.
The fighter plane of my childhood!
I still remember 1979 and the Red Barron RB51 crash. The first info stated Steve was killed in the crash. Thank God that was an error! He is right up there with Bob Hoover and Chuck Yeager.
Thanks Steve! It's always great to see these videos from you.
Great stuff, looking forward to part 2 !
That was great timing. The final clip when Steve goes to start up. Boy that engine sounds rough!😂😂 Great stuff, the engineering is such a quantum leap in such a short space of time. And the P51 was still being used in the same combat! Thank you. Everyday is a school day.

Thar engine sound you heard was the Ground power unit(gpu) so it wasn't the jet or a car near by.
She's a beaut. Love listening to Steve talk. Growing up, I remember reading about Steve in the aviation magazines, especially when he flew the Super Corsair.
Thank You for another fine Video. Love the F-86. They say it is the easiest of all jet fighters to fly and fly's like a dream. Can't wait for part 2.
Excellent video and thanks for posting it! Love those F-86 Sabres Jets!
The most beautiful aircraft ever made, peroid.
Super - thank you for sharing!
Thanks very much Steve. These videos are fantastic! 👍❤️
One of my old time favs. Nice vid 👍✈
Excellent video. Thanks for making this.
It’s a beautiful aircraft, thank you
Thank you for the informative walkaround. A superb, beautiful aircraft!
Great video of a great plane. Thanks Steve on a job well done.
Excellent clip. Informative and entertaining. An education. And hosted by the man himself. More videos like this one on other PoF's aircraft would be a treat. Please keep them coming! Thanks.
Great narration sir, and the F-86 is a beautiful aircraft
This is the jet. In our town, we have one of these beauties on display at a park. Great video. In my buddy's and my artwork in elementary school this was the jet that was taking down saucers from outer space. Thanks 😊
Very clean looking Sabre👍
This is one beautiful jet!
Hello Steve! Is good to see such a great man still so actively taking care of those beautiful and important birds..! Best wishes..!!
That was very informative, thank you.
I have followed jet aviation since the fifties, and this is the clearest and most informative walk-around tour i have ever seen. I like the way he explains things. Fascinating, thanks 4 sharing
Such a beautifully sleek jet!!!
Rudder is just there for looks, it's a jet. That's awesome. Awesome guy!
Great simple explanation... and I love the sound of the diesel engine starting up as he enters the cockpit (reminds me of the movie 'Airplane').
Never met this great man but I've seen him flying various aircraft when visiting POF . My first visit a few decades ago found me taking pictures of him flying this very aircraft. As always great job Steve
Simply amazing, I would like to flight one of those Sabres!!
Fantastic!
All i have ever wanted to do in my life is fly an F-86 Sabre. Maybe one day.
Thanks for the walk-around - my two favourite jet fighters of the '50s are the Sabre F86 and the Hawker Hunter.
Great show, lots of youthfull memories from ManstonAFB/RAF UK of the late 40's and early 50's.Thankyou and Be Blessed.
Beautiful walk around. Very informative of a legendary aircraft.
Excellent!
My Dad was a crew chief on the F-86 in Korea.
Steve Hinton aka the warbird wizard seems like a really nice guy. Hope to meet him one day
Good show.
Thanks Steve, you sure know your stuff. I can only dream, i do fly a RC F-86. It is a sweet flier just like the full scale. Enjoy your vids
Thank you NA for such a pretty (& lethal) airplane!
Steve, you have the greatest job in the world...
Thank you for posting
I had the good fortune to meet Steve and visit briefly at ICAS years ago. Such a humble guy. I don't remember why, but we talked about the filming of the movie "Always".
Great video! I can't wait to see more. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve at Oshkosh 2014 when he brought Glacier Girl in right before a big storm came through. We had a nice conversation in one of the big concession tents as we watched the storm go by, good times.
Always enjoy Steve talking in great detail..but in very simple terms that,s very easy to understand how the system..or component.actually functions..wonderful pilot..very good talker...
Thanks Steve. She is my favorite at POF.

Pof or Paf?
I saw Steve Hinton test fly the "Glacier Girl" P-38 on a PBS program a few years back and have been a big fan ever since!
One of the most beautiful airplanes ever designed❤❤❤
I’ve just started getting interested in korean war airplanes. Great video and great timing!
This is badass 💯🤙🇺🇸
And I've always thought the F-86 was the best looking, "sexiest" jet of the early jet fighters. The rc model I built many years ago, a ducted fan, was so easy to fly! Thinking about building another someday, this time with a turbine.
Beutifull. Thank you.
Great video Steve! Thanks but I know Sabre that was heaps better?? It was the CA27 Sabre Australian version with a Rolls Royce engine did mach 1 Aden cannons ! Flew these out of Williamtown nsw before converting to the French Lady ❤❤❤ Mirage 3 back in 1986 !! Great times ! Great memories! Take care everyone!!!!
Prettiest fighter ever built
Steve good information on the F-86 my dad flew it we have seen it fly in person at events at Chino airport always fly safe
Holy cow...this is a dream. My old man flew the -D model....prettiest airplane ever......I would pay a lot of money to go up in one.
North American Aviation gave us the P-51 in WW2 and then the F-86 in Korea. That’s like winning back to back championships in sports!
good walk around, help for my model making ,cheers mein
Awesome airplane! Great pilot, is there any plane Steve Hinton can't fly!
Reminds me of when I was a kid at Luke Air Force Base climbing on the fire trucks and in and out of the h43 B
what a nice jet
Didn't this first flight about 1950? Or before? So were looking at late 40's technology! W O W ! By the guys with drawing boards and slide rules!
Hope you and family are doing well, Mr Hinton -a former POF volunteer
This plane, along with the yellow-nose FW 190, are the best looking fighters of all time.
