    @@burningpotato9447 In my opinion this makes it less iconic because they are so similar, you can not really tell wich plane is better. They are both based very much on german technology and not too much on the individual skills of the american and russian constructors. At later stages, where the aircraft desingns of both sides are more different, it is more exiting to watch them because i'm not watching basically the same plane.

    I think the sabre pilots were already wearing G-suits at that time, enabling them to pull harder and withstand more G's than the mig pilots. Am I wrong?

  • @ontoverse

    @ontoverse

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, the MiG here was pulling 8-9 G's through most of the fight. With or without a 50's G-suit, I don't think many North Korean or even Soviet pilots could handle that. But yeah, the USAF had g-suits by then. I've found conflicting information regarding whether the Soviet ("honchos") pilots had them. They did have high-altitude suits (probably the VKK-1), but I'm not sure if they worked like g-suits as well. Generally a g-suit only increases tolerances by 1 g, though. 6 gs in a 50's plane is already pretty extreme -- but I doubt a real MiG-15 could handle a sustained 9G turn. Maybe I'm wrong on that though, maybe the NK and Soviet pilots where total badasses and held their planes together through the power of ideological purity....

    You know what though? I kind of like the fact that those sorts of variables are out of the game and it's just one plane versus another. I get that DCS isn't totally accurate a simulation, but no sim, even military grade, is. It's fun putting two planes up against each other without things like pilot training, tactics, G-suits, maintenance quality, mechanical reliability, etcetera... and just seeing them go toe-to-toe how their designers (largely) intended.

    Sure, MiGs in Korea were able to intercept a lot of bombers and just have a few bullet holes, And you can see that americans were horrible at marking their kills since when they saw smoke they thought that the plane was already destroyed, but the MiG-15 was incredibly build to survive that it could even land in a near base even with performance problems. Thats why the KDR of the sabres in Korea were so high. It killed more migs than it was produced at the time, like, bruh

There is a term called an "operational kill" meaning that you have taken the enemy aircraft out of the fight, hitting a mighty so it has to RTB would qualify as an operational kill. So you are right that the claimed and credited kills are too high for him many miss were actually destroyed, but that isn't how kill tallies work. Then there is of course the usual over claiming that happens in every military and that how you get these overblown numbers. Doesn't mean they fyhough a smoking mig would crash.

    If memory serves, the F86 had hydraulically boosted wing surfaces and a movable tail or "flying tail". The Mig did not. What that meant that the F86 was much more controllable at high speeds (in fact could go trans-sonic in a dive). The Mig had better thrust (a little) and a better ceiling (a lot in the days of guns only). I sorta remember the early F86 had automatic slats - giving it a boost in turns as well. Get the MIG to follow you in a dive and then pull out when you want and have him play superman against the controls.

    @@thomasvelazquez9789 I've flown the MiG-15 and Sabre in DCS, above about 700 km/h you practically can't roll in the MiG, you have more authority in the Sabre but it still definitely stiffens up. In a pure one circle/two circle fight if the MiG driver plays his cards right he should generally be able to beat the Sabre (stiff-arms him into a lower speed engagement). The radar ranging gunsight is difficult and finicky to use in the Sabre, I usually just cage it. Also, to my knowledge the British actually sold the Soviets the Nene and Derwent, which they promptly reverse-engineered and put into the MiG-15.

    In the circle fight @19:30 (ish) would you have been better served by going vertical to try and reset instead of bleeding all your energy in the turn. You weren't going to get lead on him, and his energy state didn't appear to bleed at all no matter the rate. I realize he had you right where he wanted, in his rear quadrant. Maybe, if you had broken it off a bit sooner, went vertical and used your roll rate to keep him on the lift vector. Sure, that would have likely put you into a vertical rolling scissors. But I can't help but think that changing the geometry of the fight after first realizing you couldn't match his turn would have, at a minimum, given him another equation to solve. Probably the only time I've seen you straight up out fought by a determined and relentless foe. Love your videos, so informative!

    Maybe the major mistake in the tacview round is that you kept on trying to lead him to bring a gun solution. That way, you've never been in the control zone. Same when you both dropped altitude. You are well aware that you have the advantage at altitude but you descend with him anyway. Be patient, let him sacrifice altitude and keep potential gravity energy. Don't try to lead him at all costs. When he'll realize you did not take the bait he'll have either to pull up to you (and you'll be waiting for him with more energy) or he'll flatten his curves and you'd be able to have an opportunity to boom and zoom. Anyway, don't let him pull you down when you are in the middle of the circle. Extend your turn to be under his wing plan, not over, and wait for the solution. Get outside the turn. Remember that by being under his wing plan you are actually under him where he can't see you. The moment he'll put his wing flat to look for you he's dead.

    I'm a bit confused. If Longshot's Mig has a poor roll rate, why would he prefer rolling scissors? It seems back to front (to someone who knows zip about air combat) Great video as always, really appreciate the tac talk at the end (which usually makes sense) thanks

    a rolling scissor doesn't require to constantly bank the aircraft left and right, you just keep it banked in 1 direction and you roll around the guy, where a flat scissor is left and right left and right.

    in the earlier version of these 2, the mig15 had the advantage, but US crew had better training, also, mig15 had much higher service ceiling, so could dictate when and where the fight starts

    I have been told that the mig15 suffered in the dive with pressurisation issues that effectively blinded the pilot. This came from one of my old instructors who flew the f86 in the RAAF.

    If I remember correctly, RL Mig-15s didn't have hydraulically boosted controls, so Soviet pilots would've been in a disadvantage to American pilots in drawn-out turning fights.

    F-86's and MiG's combined the best of two worlds, you have the bare bones, armed with nothing but guns and cannon dogfights where the victor all came down to which pilot honed their technique better and then there's the jet era where you fly at speeds no prop has ever flown before and never will. Several planes have come after these two beasts, with the same dogfighting doctrine, but this is the pinnacle and the peak of it all.

    DPRK and PLAAF pilots also didn't have modern pressure suits which limited their ability to push the Mig15. NATO pilots did which gave them the edge, coupled with the fact that NATO pilots had much more training, and were often experienced pilots from WW2. North Korea and China didnt even have modern air forces and tried to build one on the fly. The Soviets even sent in experienced Russian pilots to try and even the odds a bit more. Of course, they couldn't tell anyone about this so they gave their pilots a handful of Korean phrases to use in the cockpit to make them look like North Korean flights. Of course once the pilots started cursing in the middle of dogfights it kinda gave the game away!

  • @draqonfyre4385

    I believe that was a great advantage that it had, along with G suits, so the pilots could withstand more G's. For those who don't know, the Sabres had gyroscopic gunsights, allowing the gunsight to give an estimation of how much they should lead their nose, depending on the turn rate and range set on the gun sight.

    Just found your channel by accident. What amazing video--really enjoyed it! Question from someone who knows nothing: I'm curious. Why did you allow him to drag the fight down to the deck where you lose performance? Not criticizing, just wanting to learn.

  • @GrowlingSidewinder

    @GrowlingSidewinder

    3 жыл бұрын

    hey man and welcome to the channel, the nature of dogfighting is that as a fight goes on long enough it will inevitably lead to the ground, as 2 aircraft convert their gravitational potential energy into kinetic, they obvs do this at the cost of their altitude (dumping the nose) hence the fight gets dragged down, altitude can be regained but 1 fighter must figure out how to reset the fight and regain altitude.

    Can we get some MiG-29 vs F-15 BVR, with you flying the MiG-29 and trying to not die 50km out by you know, staying low. MiG is perfect for when you get into Fox-2 range, that's kind of what you should strive for.
