The "assembled' in Australia makes sense now. I did note some foot wells in the cockpit with the North American Aviation trademark stamped on them. Just got back from the museum a day ago. Sweet deal you had with staff letting you into cockpit.

Surplus RAAF Sabres were transferred to the Indonesian Air Force (AURI) and based at Iswahyudi Air Base, Madiun, Central Java. I saw them in 1975. A RAAF team assisted with support. In 1976 an AURI pilot ejected but unfortunately the seat hit and killed a farmer working in his rice padi field, just not his day. Iswahyudi Air Base had a large number of Tu16 bombers and Mig fighters, all non-flying.

Great footage and commentating on an aircraft which had input from the Brits, Americans and some final refining by the Aussies. Real International effort! Interesting that it was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier (not official) - albeit while in a shallow dive. Great to see some flying footage of this aircraft too. Well done Paul.

Final refining by the Aussies? To accommodate the Avon, over 60 percent of the fuselage was altered and there was a 25 percent increase in the size of the air intake. Another major revision was in replacing the F-86F's six machine guns with two 30mm ADEN cannon, while other changes were also made to the cockpit and to provide an increased fuel capacity.

"By 1949 they had to replace their ageing Spitfires and Vampires"???? I'd revisit that one, old son. The RAAF stopped using Spitfires when the war ended, and the RAAF's first Australian-made Vampire ENTERED service in 1949, and remained in service until 1970. One of the prerequisites of an aviation history channel is to have your facts vaguely correct, not totally and comprehensively wrong!

  • @PaulStewartAviation

No the RAAF continued flying the Mustang after WW2 ended. And I sourced the 1949 date from the HARS website.

@@PaulStewartAviation You said "aeging British SPITFIRES and Vampires. The Mustang wasn't mentioned, and, in any case, the CAC Mustang remained in service until 1959, and, as I said, the Vamp until 1970, even though it was an aeging design, and obsolescent pretty quickly. Even the Gloster Meteor didn't enter RAAF service until 1951. So, I say again, your facts are wrong, and have spoilt an otherwise excellent presentation. If I were you, I'd redo the voiceover. Here's the quote from the HARS website. "As early as 1949 the RAAF began planning a replacement jet fighter for the locally-built CAC Mustang and DHA Vampire. " I can't see the word "Spitfire" mentioned anywhere.
