Thanks for posting this Pat, glad to see how simple it is, my ST drive belt disintegrated at 17k miles, ordered a Contitech OEM belt well under half the dealer price. Two youtube videos later it was a half hour job, and I think I stopped for a tea and a smoke in the middle. Never changed a drive belt before. This one is easy enough to do by the roadside if you had to.

Its a far better system than a messy chain. Clean, maint free, quiet and efficient. These types of kevlar belts are widely used in high power industrial applications and I don't know why they aren't more common on bikes. A tip is to source a belt from an industrial belt supplier and save plenty of cash.

Hey, I did today on my F800ST within 18 minutes, extra 5 min is for 16mm wrench in the shed to undo the main stand, which is underneath the footpegplate. You have saved a lot of money, time and effort of mine. Thanks!

I checked tension and it was ok. As the belt was a used belt it matched the old one for size. I run with a lower belt tension than BMW suggest to save killing the bearings

Do you know of an after market place to purchase these belts as BMW is charging 500 for the belt? I like the idea of carrying a second belt but at $500. I have the F800ST Thanks

Continential CT1158 is what you need for an S or ST model. The GT has a longer swingarm so a different belt is needed. If you can't get the belt locally ebay will work.

Valeriu Fortu there is 3 hex that you’ll need to slacken first then underneath there is a hole in there witch you’ll use to take off all the slack and then from there you’ll replace it and to adjust it witch does require a special tool to set it at 10ibs and tension it to 4 and a half if I remember from the top of my head after that you’ll tighten the 2 side hex once belt is replaced

I'm thinking of getting a 2013 F800GT, used with less than 4,000 miles on it. How often do these belts need to be changed? I also was wondering about the belt tension. It also looked like you knew exactly what you were doing, as in, you'd done it quite a few times before. How many times have you had to replace this, and how many miles on the bike? TIA

Depends on your riding style. I just replaced one due to it starting to lose teeth. I was trying for 100,000 kms but only got to a bit over 99,600. Last belt was at 117,000 this one is at 227,000. One belt lost teeth at 40,010 kms. Go figure 🤔. Short answer - whatever you can get. My son got 12 000 put of 1 when a screw holding the belt guard in place worked lose and went through the belt. He kept riding for years like that but bought a new belt ASAP to keep as a spare. Of course he removed the screw and check the damage regularly.

You didn’t slacken the adjustment and didn’t set the rear pully in the right way witch needs to be set at the tightest point and didn’t even adjust the belt at the very least

@@rideronthestorm5925 the two on the side is the locking nut the one in the middle adjust to get current adjustment you’ll need a tool that provides 10 ibs of force and from there tighten up
