Just wanted to make a comment about how much oil the bike actually requires. You need to remember that if you are removing your old filter and starting with a new filter that new filter is going to absorb and fill up with a substantial amount of oil. So you should start the engine let it run for a minute or two and then check your oil level. I believe this guy forgot to mention that information

Mine (a 2010) has a 10mm 'female' Hex (aka allen wrench) for the sump nut. But then, I bought it in Germany, about 2 miles from their headquarters. :)

Thank you for this well-made and very informative video! I am considering buying a 2008 F800ST, It is really good to know that I can easily do a minor service. Do you have advice on resetting the "service needed" warning light? Do I have to have the GS-911diagnostic tool to do that?

Just one thing: The choice of the oil depends on the avaiability, depending on the brand used, synthetic can be a good option, mineral oil of a bad brand does more damage than any other, synthetic or semi-synthetic. I use a semi-sinthetic that costs 18 euros per Liter, around 23 dollars, to give you a comparison.

That's an expensive oil. The Castrol I use works out at about €12.50 per litre. I used to use the mineral version, but that is hard to come by lately, so I've started using the semi-synthetic.

@@clearskiesahead synthetic oil works a lot better, especially in high temperatures. Don't spare on lubrication ;)

How much oil do i need to put in ? My dipstick broke 🤔

Question: did you (have to) adjust the gap of the spark plugs? Also, did you use a torque wrench to tighten them? If so, how much torque? Anyone? Otherwise, great vid, thanks!!!

Actually, it's always good practice to use new washers. They don't cost anything and make sure you'll never leak past the seals.

On all the cars and bikes I've owned I've never used new sump plug washers. Not one has leaked.

this was really great to see under the fairings...that air filter is functional AND cosmetic, then, eh? Makes me want to redesign all that and give me room for some storage instead of that Faux-tank...would have been nice if you started the engine with the monstrous airbox removed...that coolant tank seems out of place

I'm pretty certain that airboxes are matched to the engine and it won't run well without it. There are some bikes with a trunk where you'd expect a traditional tank to be but they'll still have an airbox somewhere.

Just noticed these sidelights. I was told i could not fit those on my F800ST since I haven't got the crashbars. Could anyone point out to me where I might find these?

It's better to use a breaker bar, rather than the socket wrench, that way you don't put too much stress on the wrench mechanism.

What filter is that

correct oil is 15W50 100% synthetic

I see that you removed the mirror (but didn't mention it) when you removed the upper fairing. Is that necessary?

Yes, the mirror fixture also fixes the fairing to the frame.

Imagine my face at min 3:13 when I thought the reason why I was watching the video (seat removal) is just not here 🤣

The seat comes off by using the same key for the ignition. There is a key slot to the left of the brake light, simply turn the key while lifting the rear end of the seat, then slide it out of the front catch by moving it towards the rear end of the bike. Anyone using the bike should have picked this up in the user manual or in regular use, and since it is not a technical issue, it was excluded from the video for the sake of brevity. I hope you figure it out, there's a handy helmet catch under the seat too. Look it up.

15w-50 oil recomended!!!

SAE 15w50 is now prefered, right?

I can never tell where my oil level is. No matter how I attempt to pull out the stick, I can never see a definitive line of oil, it just always looks covered. I wish the F800ST had a window like the 1200 bikes usually do. Are there any tips to actually see a line of oil on the dip stick?

I know what you mean, it can be difficult to see the oil mark especially when the oil is clean or the engine is still warm, as well as the brand and viscosity of the oil you use. All I can advise is to insert and remove the stick slowly when cold and have the bike on its main stand. If you're not using Castrol Power 1, I would suggest you try it. I hate endorsing big companies for free, but it definitely makes a difference to gearbox smoothness and it is a mineral oil as stipulated in the fluid specifications. Hope this helps.

clearskiesahead which one is the main stand on BMW F800 S/ST? Because usually the side stand is main and the other is always optional

The main stand is the one with two feet, which leaves the bike vertical.

The manual says to read the oil without twisting in the dip stick. If you're twisting it in then you cannot get a good reading.

Great video but turned me off looking into getting a F800ST. Seems overly complicated to do regular maintenance.
