It comes natural if you know what you are doing. A few years back I was "drifting" BMW X6 during winter on a huge parking lot, going sideways over 100km/h and after like 15 minutes we noticed we actually talked like nothing was happening for the whole time while non car people or someone unexperenced would be either puking or screaming lol

07:40, For RC model car racing, you often have to be thinking about the next corner - particularly in midfield sections - before you've entered the first. If you don't, you'll struggle to make the next corner. That's because they move so fast. You have to be using your peripheral vision, looking ahead of where the car is at any given point on the track. You also have to listen to what's happening ahead..

Good advice! It reminded me of my approach during many years of teaching track driving, from the passenger seat. If a student made a mistake going through a corner, I wouldn't start talking to him right away about what went wrong or how it could have been improved the corner as that would have him thinking about the last corner instead of the next one. I might just say we will work on that one next lap, if it went really badly. I would then just log it in my memory and start suggesting a different approach, or correction to that same corner as we approached it on the next lap. That way you keep the student thinking ahead instead of behind.

That's exactly happening to me in sim-racing. If I screw up a corner and think about it, the next two-three corners are worse than the "screwed up" one. Good advice, don't let emotions and mistakes dominate you, just focus on push, push, push, next corner, and again.

This makes my heart skip a beat, too. My Mk IV Golf was certainly no R32, but it did service in our family for 23 years and clocked up 421 000 km - on Norwegian roads, which are often salted to bits during winter. That car was a real trooper.

Especially with such a down to earth owner, you two had a really nice conversation. I had the stock exhaust on both my R’s but with resonator removed, & i wired a switch under the dash to open/close the flapper valve in the stock exhaust (that naturally opens over 3.5k RPM) 😅 Again, keep up the great driving & entertaining track vids Misha!! 🔥👌

The tip was about concentration endurance in a racing scenario where you drive on the limit all the time. On a passenger Sunday drive when your racing line is compromised you just let off the pace to make it safely. When you are distracted and have a non ideal conditions and decide to go for it anyway you can make a bad judgment and crash.

Listen to F1 drivers over their radios during races, talking with their team and engineers. Humans need 10,000 practice hours to become a master at more complex tasks (concert pianist, F1 driver) or 10,000 repetitions for a "simple" one (cartwheel on balance beam). If you drive two hours per day and 300 days per year, this means you need 16.7 years for the 10,000 hours. At some point towards the 10,000 you will be able to talk about what you're doing, while you are doing it, without this impacting the quality. Research that comes up with the 10,000 number also says that nobody is predictable under 9,950. Oh, 10,000 hours of racing don't make you a great concert pianist. Bottom line is that the talent needed - provided zero critical to success handicaps - is persistence and ignoring the comments of other people as well as your inner voice while you are learning: being able to filter out what can make you better. Just Focused Do It. In racing, simulators help depending on their level of realism. In a real 747 flight simulator, aborting take-off in a panic stop without seatbelts on really lands you in the cockpit windows (actually these will be monitor displays that your head would crash). The simulator's hydraulic actuators or linear motors can give realistic accelerations to mimic what really happens in these situations and every hour in such a thing counts - formally - as a real flight hour in your log book. F1 has simulators too, but unless these generate real G forces they're not a complete training tool towards the 10,000.

If someone hasn't learned that yet, they maybe shouldn't be doing track racing until they do Autocross first. 😶 But I suppose having it spelled out like this is good for reinforcing confidence in looking ahead, and don't ever forget it for even a split second when you're doing track racing.

I worked on a race team in ALMS and the owner of the team who had had Porsche 959s, Ferraris and quite a few super cars drove a blue mk3 R32 and was one of his favorite cars. His opinion was that super cars are nice to look at but the stresses of daily driving on the car and yourself wasn’t worth it. I guess it helped having a two car pro race team and being able to drive flat out in a safe environment helped him get over that.
