F train service disrupted after SECOND derailment in a week | NBC New York

The subway system is dealing with another derailment Wednesday, according to the city, one that is wreaking havoc on service in Brooklyn.
NYCT Subway posted on X that F train service was severely disrupted across the board, especially in that borough, after the incident on the elevated track near West 8th St-NY Aquarium in Coney Island.
Transit officials say one car of the northbound F train derailed between the Neptune and 8th Street stations around 12:20 p.m. They say there are no known reports of injuries. Thirty-seven people had been removed from the train by 3 p.m.
News 4's Melissa Colorado reports.

    Yep. All senior guys are counting days to retire in our shop. All junior guys are sending resumes everywhere possible and leave within 1-3 years. Quantity of workers shrank in half in 5 years because we have no common sense in our shop: General superintendent says "I don't care that my supervisors don't know anything technical, as long as they are nice guys" Superintendent says: "I don't care that we have nothing available to do the job. Don't bring to me that list of spare parts we need to do the job. You just have personal issues with store room guy" I feel sorry and aggravated for not being able to do a job and ended up buying at least cheap stuff like drill bits, taps, connectors etc...

They were trying to save money by making areas around the clock, and going crazy on stupid crack tiles ( so call emergencies) in stead doing the repairs and projects that will keep the system safe. The place is more in disrepair then ever before. Blame upper management for that. MTA had a separate crew that would handle repairs throughout the system and they down scale them to almost nothing, so this would take away from other departments, that would take care of projects that will help to prevent this.MTA is going back to the 70"s Drugs on the train. @@laurie7689 They are, the F train was hardware, the fact that a piece of a wood "tie" that tracks are "spiked" to, fell to the street, means it was the track. The only way the 1st one could have possibly happened, is by the person running the train that had been vandalized. From one of the earlier articles I saw, they were not in the Train Operator's cab at the front of the train, they were running it from the Conductors cab in the middle, was if they they stopped because of a Red Signal, and manually "keyed" past the automatic braking system that PREVENTS them from bypassing a Red Signal. That was a major screwed-up, because of WHERE they were running it from, there was no way to see infront of the Train. My Father used to work at the MTA Subway Shops in Coney Island and dealt with maintaining and repaiing the braking systems. That's the reason that I know more about how the system actually works than most people. The distance to a train in front of them, or based on which track a "switch" in the track is lined up with, is what controls the Signals.

  • @LindaRobertsCallsScammers
    @LindaRobertsCallsScammers5 ай бұрын

    The recurring incidents of subway trains derailing in New York City prompt a complex examination of several contributing factors. Aging infrastructure, insufficient maintenance, and delayed upgrades are key elements that collectively strain the reliability of the subway system. The extensive network of tracks and tunnels, some dating back to the early 20th century, faces wear and tear that demands consistent upkeep. Budgetary constraints and bureaucratic hurdles often impede timely repairs and modernization efforts, exacerbating the risk of derailments. Furthermore, the sheer volume of daily commuters places an immense burden on the aging system, leading to accelerated deterioration. A comprehensive and urgent approach is required to address these challenges, involving increased investment in infrastructure, streamlined maintenance processes, and a commitment to prioritize passenger safety. As the city grapples with these recurrent incidents, a concerted effort from both government authorities and transit agencies becomes paramount to ensuring the long-term viability and safety of the subway system in New York City.

    I strongly agree. As a native NYCer, I find it condescending that most people will immediately place all the blame on the MTA and completely disregard any information on why the system is the way it is today. It’s not like other ones around the globe and it can’t be compared due to the sheer amount of use these subways get. I definitely believe there is corruption and some lack of responsibility with staff/bureaucrats in the system, but the public never places enough faith within the city to do things about it. Always complaining about the fare hikes, but we never talk about the amount of civilians that misuse/abuse the system, cheating and costing the heart of our transportation millions.

    Sooooo, by that construction workers report, a Crosstie broke? Guess that means the track was slightly uneven, therefore the gauge was off, and the wheels flange either jumped over a slightly inward warped track, or it fell into the inside of a slightly warped outward track. Either way, the only part of a railway that’s usually made of wood are crossties. Now, you’d think that wood is a stupid material to use for railroad, right? Nope. Wood, if treated regularly with Creosote, can last longer in extreme conditions and under heavy use and tort tension than most other materials. It also has the added feature of being able to contort under the 10M tons of freight in each train. If it was 100% rigid, it would crumble after a few trains, and that would be really bad for obvious reasons. CSX attempted to use concrete once, but it was a frivolous pursuit. The concrete didn’t have enough elasticity and was too rigid, so concrete crossties would crack, chip, and even snap under the weight of trains. Wood is currently the best material to use concerning longevity, availability, and cost effectiveness. Of course, if you neglect to maintain it, just like any other material, it will decay and eventually cause something like this to happen. If it is a broken crosstie, then the blame will fall squarely on New Yorks Metro Transit Authority for not maintaining their tracks as per FRA regulations and NTSB Findings and Recommendations.

  • @Bassotronics
    @Bassotronics5 ай бұрын

    We do need new trains though. The R44s trains on the Staten Island Railway, and the R46s on the Letter lines are falling apart and the other older trains we have are rapidly approaching 40-50 years in age, meaning they'll start breaking down more often, as well as becoming incompatible with newer tech.
