Extreme Primitive Desert Survival

The desert is one the most hostile environments to exist in due to the scarcity of water. The plants and animals of the desert are adapted to such harsh conditions and for man to exist in the desert he too must adapt to the arid hot landscape. A reliable source of potable water is the single most important element to surviving in this inhospitable environment.
In this video, I spend two nights camping primitive style in the Mojave Desert of California with the goal of locating a rumored spring approximately 5 miles (7 km) from my camp. The temperature ranged from a night time low of 62˚F (17˚C) to a high of 94˚F (34˚C). I brought basic food items for the journey which included dry meat, paddle cactus leaf (nopal), sweet potatoes, dry papaya and raw cacao nibs (the papaya and cacao were not shown in the video). I also brought a gourd container full of about 4 liters of fresh water and a 1.5 liter bottle of water as backup for the day’s hike. The hike was about 10 miles round trip from my camp to the spring. I began the hike at noon and expected to arrive in about 3 hours. To my surprise I arrived at about 5:00 pm after stopping twice to rest and once to shoot video. By then I had already consumed over 4 liters of water and was still very thirsty. I drank a little water straight from the spring and collected some in my now empty gourd container. I commenced the hike back to camp at about 6:00 pm and consumed the remaining fresh water during that hike and arrived back at camp at about 8:30 pm after stopping once to rest and once to shoot more video. I nearly stepped on a sidewinder rattlesnake before it became completely dark and had to complete the hike back using the light of a small battery-powered flashlight. Upon arriving I drank another 4 liters of water and felt life and energy returning to my body. I snacked on some dry papaya and cacao nibs but had no desire to eat anything more. During the night while sleeping on the ground I felt my muscles cramping everytime I moved. I recall that during the hike my left foot cramped once as well. Before I began this adventure I had spent several stressful days with little sleep and that probably contributed to my rapid deterioration on this journey. Some will criticize me for having used a flashlight or bringing extra water, etc. but it's important to consider the fact that I also carried a backpack with camera gear which weighed over 20 pounds (9 kilos). Without the added weight I could travel much easier.

That's totally how I'm going to do it , when the BLM comes and wonders what I'm doing ,I'll just tell them I'm filming a documentary seeing how long I can be in the desert before somebody from the government hassles me . Many thanks Chad. This didn't look like it was one of your easiest or happiest excursions. But - as ever - it was a beautiful meditation. I've been in hospital for the last two weeks and everything has been a bit fraught. Watching this helped me slow down and put life in perspective. Many many many thanks Mr Zuber.

This will probably look stupid to you and anyone else reading this. But I didn't realise I had a headache until I watched one of your films and stopped having a headache. I don't know whether it was because of you or because my body and brain shifted into an alignment at that particular moment. It's a very difficult thing to explain. It's like you spend 50 years of your life breathing in -and suddenly discover you can breathe out as well. It's an odd piece of human existence. Anyway.Thank you for what you do. I can't tell you enough how much I like your videos lol, you were not lying when you said the sky shots on this Adventure were Amazing, because They truly were. I have actually made prickly cactus before, except I grilled it and used a lime and sea salt to flavor it, then I served it with Pico de gallo, it's really good. Also if you're able to make a candle out of lemon juice and lemon zest it'll help with flies and mosquitos, almost like a citronella candle but without all the harmful chemicals that'll give you a headache, and if you burn sage the thick smoke will keep bee's and such away, while also cleansing for negative spirits lol. I go camping a lot in the summer in Gettysburg and the flies and bee's are so bad... But I'm super sensitive to smells and chemicals so I can't use citronella or sprays, and I love herbs and natural oils, so I made the candle and oil out of lemon juice and zest, burned the candle and rubbed the oil on my skin, not one bug or mosquito at all!! Best natural bug repellant I've found, and I use Sage Everyday!!! There's a hundred uses for Sage lol.

Thanks for the detailed comment. Yes, the sky in the desert is so spectacular! There were no mosquitoes at camp just some flies and then a swarm of bees in search of water. I was stung twice. I didn't bring sage with me on this trip but I should start collecting some and drying it for later use. I love the aroma of sage and often use it in cooking. I've made many candles of beeswax but never added lemon to them. That's a good idea. I also dislike the use of chemicals. Thanks again for this info! :-)

It's a little different to sleep in with little clothing. When you're active the blood is flowing faster, you're burning a lot more calories and creating heat. While sleeping blood circulation slows way down and you feel the cold much more... Give it a try and let me know how you fair.

These videos are so interesting and calming
Im so so glad that you made sure you were safe above all else. I read the description and anyone who criticizes you for making sure you were properly prepared and safe needs to understand while this is primitive.. This is also for our entertainment and learning and NOTHING is worth you risking yourself to bring us these videos and anyone who says these need to be done totally primitive even if it would be unsafe as you pointed out it was, obviously forgets cameras to bring us these videos arent exactly primitive. I rather you use a light for a TINY section of the trip so you dont get bit and have a tiny bit of extra water so you can bring us more videos if you so choose. Thank you for sacrificing things to bring us entertaining videos. And please continue to be safe first and formost.
