Ethanol bring out also other stuff, if you want a pure solution of chlorophyll inject some mL of LPG (lighter's gas) in the provette. Ethanol will become yellow (organic stuff) and LPG super green. Then separate and put some ethanol in the LPG that evaporates. I've tried the separation but never the UV light, great video :D

Hold up there Walter. LPG is LIQUID PROPANE GAS. "Lighters gas" is butane or in the case of a wick type lighter it's naptha. So tell us, what the fuck are you REALLY talking about. Thanks in advance.

And why and how do you "put some ethanol in the LPG that evaporates"? That makes, no sense at all. Kinda like the rest of your post. Basically word salad. The five likes in 6 years shows how few people are actually as mentally garbled as you. Wow. Just wow.

    1. Be more respectful, I don't know you and you don't know me. 2. Be more respectful, I don't see why to insult. 3. Your comment deserves no response but I hope others can benefit from it. 4. LPG is not liquid propane gas but liquid petroleum gas, a mixture of propane and butane, the fuel of cars and lighters. If you have access to other solvents you can use those, but for a home experiment this is the most accessible, albeit very dangerous one. You must absolutely stay away from flames and heat sources. LPG is a gas at room temperature but when it is extracted from the can it remains liquid for a while because it cools down a lot. Then a liquid liquid separation is carried out to extract the chlorophyll and leave the other substances (mainly carotenoids) in ethanol. The two solvents are separated with a separating funnel. If solid chlorophyll is desired, it is allowed to evaporate, otherwise fresh ethanol is added. Here a video where they use this method kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4ykyMWhfq7XnZM.html. 5. Be more respectful to others and the world will be more respectful to you.

Gooferking, want to hear a sad story? We did a lab showing cell's surface area to volume ratio using potato cubes and Iodine. Teacher pulled out lab grade Iodine. We soaked the potatoes in it, and she then dumped it down the drain. Lab grade, very pure, Iodine. I cried.

The chlorophyll is fluorescing. This means that when the UV light hits chlorophyll, it excites electrons (causes the electrons to go to a higher energy state). When the electrons drop back to their ground state, they release light energy (at a wavelength that is longer than that of the light that excited them in the first place!).

Are the chlorophyll cells still alive after the extraction process?

  • @mbudreau

By the time you boil the plant, the cells have expired which is required to extract the chlorophyll pigments. Chlorophyll is not a cell, but a pigment, in this case a protein structure. The alcohol solvent is required to keep the protein from completely denaturing. With a centrifuge, it would be possible to separate this solution into chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. These may exhibit different properties under a black light, I have never tried this but am now willing to find out.
