    I hate to tell you this but it only burned 1/5 of the way down because he stopped the experiment early. Doctors/surgeons who treat white phosphorous burns say that it burns a hole through flesh down to the bone when left untreated. In the absolute best case scenario, even if you lived literally 5 minutes from a hospital, you would actively be on fire for 5 minutes. When used as a weapon, it is purposefully sadistic.

    Doctor here. I just want to try and illustrate just how terrible that burn on the steak would have been were it on a real person. You might get the impression that it's not so bad from the video because it was only on meat which is muscle. Were that on an actual person's skin, it would have burnt completely through an area about the same size as the brown markings on the steak. It would have been an horrific injury that would have required multiple skin and muscle grafts and weeks/months in hospital. White phosphorus doesn't fuck around.

    I found a military document recently which detailed how to treat White Phosphorus burns. It's essential never to use any type of oil as it spreads the WP more and increases damage. A quick fix until reaching a hospital can be wet mud or sand on the burn as it suffocates the WP. If the wound can be immersed in water this can also help. Ultimately, the victim needs to have every piece of WP removed from the wound, then the wound can be treated. As for the toxicity, I haven't found any information about what can be used to reverse the potential damage from that, I suspect there isn't any cure.

    Osteonecrosis of the jaw is rare. It was seen in people who worked for years manufacturing phosphorus-containing matches back in the 1800's. I doubt that a brief exposure would cause it. The condition is still seen today in a small number of people who are using intravenous bisphosphonate agents for chemotherapy.

    In the military we would carry little bottles of a blue liquid in our NBC kit. I believe it was a copper sulfate solution. The idea was that since you can only keep the WP from burning for a very limited time with the water in your canteen if you got it on your skin, the solution could be poured on it to encapsulate it. Could you do a video showing this, and explaining the chemistry behind? Thanks for all the highly interesting videos, btw!!

  • @762girl

    @762girl

    8 жыл бұрын

    +ladedk That's exactly right. But if you were to make it for a medkit it would pay to look up the conc of the solution. When I was a chem major and doing undergrad research Boron chem naturally groups of friends would follow personal interests and there will always be a pyro and shock bunch. One was synthesizing somethin with red phosphorus and it wet off. Watchglass fragments and pieces of burning P were imbedded in the laceration on his arm. EMTs arrived and Pete was sitting there with his arm submerged in the family pool. They asked him where the victim was and he replied, "Well that would be me." He takes his arm out and the white smoke started. One was a veteran and knew about the copper sulphate so Pete pointed to where it was in his lab (pre phobia science amateur days). First batch was wayy strong and Pete I think went into low Earth orbit with a pretty white contrail! Next batch just right for the ride to the hospital :)

    Interesting side note: when WWI ended, tons of incenidary bombs containing white phosphorus were dumped into the Baltic Sea. These things have been rotting and releasing white phosphorus, which when it turns yellow-orange, looks a lot like Baltic Amber. I have these "Fireworks" that contain white phosphorus, they are easily ignited with a fair bit of friction and every time I used them I would always have a headache. I since looked into it and they have since been banned for years in the US because they contain “poison”. It appears that these are just white phosphorus sticks with a colorful coating protecting it from the air. They act fairly similar to the white phosphorus you have showcased in the video but the color is a light yellow. I have a bunch more if you wanted me to send some out for a video.

    A substitute teacher I had in high school used to be a medic in Vietnam. He said he kept a scalpel in his shirt pocket at all times because of white phosphorus. If anyone got it in themselves, the first instinct would be too brush it off, but that made it spread, and it would just keep burning until it had consumed itself. The easiest way to get it off was to cut it out of the skin, hence the scalpel. He would just cut under the burning phosphorus add scoop out the skin.

    Battlefield treatment of phosphorus wounds involved immersion in a copper (ii) sulphate solution. This causes the phosphorus to glow much more intensely, allowing it to be seen and removed. This is still the perscribed method (in my lab) for dealing with phosphorus spills and fragments produced through cutting. Perhaps you could try that, along with other transition metal salts?

    Putin is using white phosphorus bombs in civilian areas in Ukraine. If people needed guerilla style protection against such war crimes, is there anything else you'd recommend besides copper sulphate, and what quantity of copper sulphate might be suggested as a minimum to keep on hand? Are there application method considerations? What about storage for the copper sulfate and things to avoid mixing it with if relevant? Can any mask mitigate the side effects of the smoke fumes that may be caused to the lungs? Would you have any other suggestions about the smoke or any other consideration that could help a civilian and layperson minimise the destructive effects if exposed? Anything to not do? One comment says never to use water but then there's comments which refer to use of water. Thanks in advance for any help!

    @@dejfcold hi there, appreciate this. What's your source? I would have been reporting something from a news source, but this was a long time ago. Not saying you're wrong, especially given your specifications. My thinking here was, what are the implications of this for civilians (in particular) under attack? And if affected by the weapon, what kind of first aid materials are necessary to manage the fallout, and are those materials available to civilians? I'm currently extremely preoccupied but at that time I had the opportunity to look into WP and was horrified. At this time, i was following the invasion video diaries of some Ukrainian people and i was worried they would be attacked in this way and what they might be able to do to forearm themselves. There's been so much daily destruction then and because of circumstances i haven't been able to keep up. But, if you had a good friend who was not a soldier but an unarmed civilian who within the scope of menace by such a weapon - or you were facing such a weapon yourself, amidst goods shortages - is there anything you'd recommend for _that_ weapon? ("Basically thermite in magnesium containers"). I don't have the bandwidth to research that right now; but what i am interested in is how innocent civilians can protect themselves from war crimes, short of us having an effective UN that would take action regardless of the nationality of perpetrators, which basically isn't going to happen any time soon in my analysis. A civilian might not be able to avoid catastrophic injury but they might be able to prepare themselves as to what action is best if possible when faced with those conditions. Cheers.

    @@mothratemporalradio517 hey! I didn't get s notification of your reply, so I'll respond at least late. As for the source - it's hard to actually find much about it, especially from reputable sources, but I have multiple reasons for believing it's not WP. Mind you, I'm no weapons expert so I might be wrong, but at the very least I'm not intentionally lying as that would be pointless. WP is not explicitly banned. Everything incendiary is banned near civilians which includes both thermite and WP so practically it makes no difference in that regard. As for the reasons. When watching videos of WP being used compared to videos from UA, WP looked different. There were pictures of debris after some attacks and these pictures included failed pellets that carry the thermite. As for first aid: There's not much you can do. If you get it on yourself, you won't be able to put it out, so the best you can do is to get it off of yourself somehow and remove any clothes that could catch fire. The good thing is, that the thermite might not actually get out of the magnesium pellet, so it should be a bit easier to get it off of yourself. It actually might just bounce off of you by itself. In that case, you'd just treat the would just like any other burn. As a precaution, just take cover. Preferably in a concrete structure.

    I am one of very few people in the country who has worked with Phosphorus in a chemical plant on a very large scale, Acted as a first responder and incident commander for Phosphorus releases, and worked as a chemical analyst in a laboratory with Phosphorus. P4 is an amazing element that deserves the upmost respect.

    I believe the lack of substantial damage on the meat was due to the lack of blood flowing through the veins. In a real life scenario, the blood in our bodies would produce a different result. I think it would be interesting to see this experiment repeated with bloody meat or fresher so. Very informative and interesting video! Thanks!

    Thanks. You could've also tried reaction with NaOH. It is stable in water but as soon as we would add salt there would be formation of NaOH in some part which would start the reaction as white phosphorus reacts with NaOH in any condition and the reaction is so cool.

    As a Syrian that was so horrifying to me knowing my people men women and children had to deal with it being bombed on them by the Assad's regime, Iran and Russia. thankfully i left without being personally bombed by white phosphorus but unfortunately for others my hometown and ALOT of other cities and towns were... Also the occupation has used it against civilians in Gaza too and the history is repeating itself and no one is bothered about it... Thank you humanity for letting us down ❤️

    Wow, I just found this channel, love it, will share with friends in my college :) by the way, you could make fluoroantimonic acid, it is dangerous, but you have a lot of lab experience, and it would be a nice thing because there isn't any video of it on KZread synthesis, some reactions, or even just showing it on cam but make sure you get to know MSDS and everything about it before you do it

    White phosphorus turns into red phosphorus after a while, when exposed to light. This causes it to turn yellow and then orange and red. I made my white phosphorus out of the red allotrope so it was more like wax and yellow. It's an interesting and facinating element, even though it's more toxic than potassium cyanide. Nice video!

    So glad that I've never had an accident with white phosphorus where I deal with it so much. I produce white phosphorus for element collectors and labs and make it myself from the red allotrope by heating it under argon and distilling the white allotrope off into water.

    A friend of my dad's picked up a cylinder in eastern Oregon. He turned to yell at his wife and it exploded, getting white phosphorus on his hands. He had to put his hands in the sink of their motorhome, but it would reignite when he removed them. They drove to Klamath Falls but they could not treat it there. Then to Eugene, and again turned away. They finally ended up getting treatment in Portland Oregon, a trip made standing in the motorhome with hands in the sink.

    +Nile Red Greetings!!!! With every video i become more informed. Here is a suggestion for an experiment: why don't you try to make a video (if possible) about the potential damage of the thermite reaction between aluminium and TUNGSTEN OXIDE instead of iron oxide. That would make a great video.

  • @NileRed

    @NileRed

    8 жыл бұрын

    Why tungsten oxide? I should also make a thermite video in general.

  • @aboubrad

    @aboubrad

    8 жыл бұрын

    Nile Red I chose tungsten oxide under the assumption that it might make a more "powerful" thermite than iron oxide since tungsten has a significantly higher melting point. Does that make it more powerful? I thought (if possible) that you would be interested in making a "comparison" video that would demonstrate which thermite is more potent. As you already know tungsten oxide fumes are quite TOXIC if inhaled caution is a must. Anyway if you have the protective gear and interest for such a video, that would be great. Keep up the good work. Your videos are very knowledgeable. peace out.
