External Compositing from Cinema 4D to AE. Which plugin should you use?

Фильм және анимация

NB: This tutorial is still relevant, the External Compositing Tag name has changed in the latest version of Cinema 4D 2023. The Tag is now called Cineware and is found in the Render Tags menu.
Have you ever had times when using External Compositing with Cineware just doesn't work? Do you find the extra steps to make Cineware recognise External Compositing Tags annoying? Did you know there is an easier way to transfer the information from External Compositing to After Effects without having to bake animations down into keyframes?
In this tutorial I want to introduce you to the C4DImporter Plugin, where you can find it and how you can install this into After Effects. By using this plugin in conjunction with a simple ".aec" file can save you a lot of time and head scratching. I use this plugin all the time and it is a part of my everyday workflow.
I am going to run through 3 short examples to show you how versatile the C4DImporter Plugin is, this is of course the tip of the iceberg, but hopefully this will convince you to introduce this into your workflow.
Disclaimer: I am using the latest version of the C4DImporter Plugin, Cinema4D S24 and the After Effects CC 2021. In earlier versions there are known issues of importing AEC files into After Effects, I have never encountered these issues. Please refer to Adobe and C4D forums for solutions. Thanks.

Thanks for this! Yes, baking things out, specifically cameras that are in nulls, is a total pain. Your old-school workflow of using the AEImporter plug worked really well. Small point though... after moving to C4d 2023, the External compositing tag is now gone... whether using Standard or Redshift... at least it doesn't show up for _me_ when using Shift+C to search. It's now seems to be called, oddly enough, the Cineware Tag, and it works just as we might expect when exporting the .AEC and importing the .AEC into AE. No need to bake camera rigs or clones or saving to alembic or any of that garbage. Glad I found your reminder and recommendation of the old way. :)

Thank you so much for putting this together. It helped me out alot. Although I'm working with EJ's Bendy Limb Rig, not sure if you're familiar with it and I have a character that is swiveling his head around. I put an external compositing tag on the head and when it's imported into AE the keyframes don't come with it, and the "null" just remains static. Any idea why? Any advice would be great! I've been struggling with this for 2 days now. Thanks again!

I have a spline wrap along a helix which spirals in a video placeholder clip. I have an external compositing tag on the video placeholder. Once I bring the .aec file into AE the created video placeholder null just stays in place and doesn't follow along the animated spline wrap along the helix. I have searched everywhere with no luck on how to fix this. Very frustrating!!! Do you happen to know a work around?
