Exposing the Lies, Greed, & Corruption that's Destroyed the Beauty Industry | BEAUTIFUL and BOTHERED

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On this week’s episode of Beautiful and Bothered, Johnny and Kevin dissect the lies, greed, and corruption of the beauty industry. Johnny reveals incredibly specific examples as they discuss content creators selling their souls for brand deals, brands exploiting honest content creators and manipulating consumers, and dupe culture ruining innovation.
🖤 A note (and elaboration) on today's conversation:
"I can't tell you how much a struggled with the decision to even release this episode. Not out of nervousness to alienate brands, but the apprehension of getting our points across in a logical and humble manner to all of you. It's nearly impossible to have a conversation like this (especially on the internet) without triggering someone's defense. Either telling you... your experience is wrong, how they think you should feel about it, or that theirs or someone else's experiences are worse. We want to make it clear from the start... we're not on the offensive. To any of these inevitable comments, we say, "...we know." We're not prioritizing our problems over anyone else's. We would actually love for you to share your story or get something off your chest, if you're comfortable doing so. The space we've created here is one in which we can help each other and take genuine concern for each others well-being. We hope to always be there for you with understanding and grace, as we hope you will be for us. As Kevin and I say in the episode, makeup and beauty used to be a space of beloved creativity and self-expression. As professional makeup artists for over a decade, that was the industry we fell in love with.
Some of you might be thinking, “it’s not a big deal.”
Please understand that for us, it is not only our livelihood, but it saved our lives in a world we regularly get told we're not welcome in. The frustration you see in this conversation is two people mourning the loss of that security to corporate greed and social media. Above all else, I hope you understand how grateful I am for the platforms I have and the opportunities I have received.
But what good is a platform without using it to amplify the voices of those desperate for honesty, equality, and integrity?
I also want to make it clear how much we celebrate the success of our female counterparts. Our frustrations at the sexism and homophobia we face does not detract from our feelings of how WORTHY they are for the opportunities they receive. The discussion of inequality often gets reduced to a contest of, "what someone wants... will take something away from another." We're all aware of the defensive arguments from threatened men in male-dominated fields when women speak up about being denied a much-deserved seat at the table. I hope this conversation doesn't inspire the reverse.
It is a conversation and safe space for all persons who are tired of climbing a mountain that is exponentially steeper because of their gender, race, sexual orientation, age, etc. Our ONLY goal in sharing these struggles is in the hope that one day everyone will get to run towards their dreams on the same playing field. 🖤 We love you all.

Can I just say and I'm crying a bit whilst I'm typing, it's not just the martini. You, Robert, Kevin and James gave me back enough self confidence to take care of me. I'm 55, a mother of a teen and a wife. I'd pretty much lost myself. Your content helped me find me. Do not EVER think that you guys don't make a difference. I'm so grateful to you all. Y'all rock really hard.

At 50 they taught me how to be confident at my sons wedding and I'd stayed because through my husband's cancer battle they make me smile and laugh every Sunday ( And now sometimes during the week) I don't how Johnny/Kevin don't have everyone wanting them. It is so frustrating to hear that brands are ignoring your talent and expertise in the make-up world. Clearly because they are not wanting to have men represent their products; that mindset by the brands/retailers is so, so wrong. You both are one of the few I watch for trustworthy info. Thank you because as another person said I’m an older person trying to find true info that would work for me vs. a viral products being shoved in front of us every.single.day. Your true experience as professional mua’s matters to me. Thank you for your outspoken honesty about the industry and how social media is so abusive by brands. Amen on the SAD issue - I live in it for 4 months every year…. Your truth is so important.

It honestly makes me so sad & makes me wanna cry to hear Johnny go through these struggles because I don’t understand why people think that we wouldn’t want a collaboration of his products & honestly these brands are missing out on money. I don’t buy new pallets anymore but if I knew that Johnny or Kevin had made one, I would buy it immediately because I know that it would be a good product. It’s 2024 why is it so hard to accept a man who wears make up? I thought that I was good at make up until I’ve learned so many things that I had no idea I was doing wrong, or didn’t even know, from these two men. Like, damn sorry that these brands are intimidated by people who do make up better than them & are not female. I’m happy that they standby products that are actually good versus having people go out & buy a bunch of products for their personal financial gain, to find out they aren’t worth it. It’s like Johnny said those people have no more followers or viewers. Mr. Johnny Ross, I would have killed to have you do my make up when I got married, I wish I could have hired you even though you don’t do it anymore. You deserve better than this. I fucking love this podcast & I fucking love you guys💕🥰 sending all the love & I hope you are happy & safe!

I’m a Mom of two. Born and raised in conservative haven Texas. My cousin was a drag queen for a number of years, and in my deepest darkest days, he pulled me out of it with makeup. I got into 2014-2016 hype, fell in love with creators who had me disgusted and over it by 2019. I kid you not, I had given up and was back into not caring. Then I met Barbara. Actually, my daughter found Barbara on accident on my phone and I turned back on KZread kids for her and saved that hilarious short. It got me back on the beauty train and made me genuinely laugh for the first time in I don’t even know how long. I appreciate all you and Kevin do. Y’all are out here busting it. Yeah right when it was a sort of common sense cultural moment for the more egregious wastefulness, the short term entertainment shift of consumerism with tik tok shop and temu and all that really reestablished their grasp on social media and the society in general. I read someone saying lockdown had this association w social media being much more about stuff bc we werent doing anything and it's like now everything has this inflated production value where it's cheap af but it'll sell because of the filters and the packaging and the marketing all designed to make you feel like theres a special communal exchange happening and it's just grifting basically.

The sad thing, for me, is that for once I have someone (you guys, the Welsh twins and a handful of others) talking to me (43) AND my daughter (12) about how make up really looks like IRL, how important is skin care, how FUN can make up be, and you get drown in this ocean of nothingness 🙄 I'm struggling to keep my daughter with her eyes open for this fake, sus situations. She's too young, she is too easy influenced. I'm here working "against" all this social media Circus every fu*ing day, and it's exhausting! I'm 35 and only got into KZread the last few months. I was never interested and I now realize why - after being in retail, I didn't want to watch all the FAKE people who are just promoting product without actually knowing what they're talking about. Robert Welsh was the first one I fell in love with. Then I saw Johnny's Sephora skits and laughed because I had clients like that too (non-beauty retail). I was so happy when I found his podcast on here. The other person I love is Andrea Ali. She's a real makeup artist and talks about products the same way Johnny/Kevin/Robert do. Thank you guys for making me feel included and having real conversations about the beauty industry.

This podcast is so important to me. I love makeup. So much. I’m a guy, that works at Sephora, I literally in New Jersey and am also getting so messed up from this weather. I love colorful, gothic grungy makeup. I love to do the “weird” makeup lol. It’s so sad to see all makeup just become the same. The gondolas are set up the damn same: liquid bronzing drops and blushes on top, skin tint on the next shelf, etc. It breaks my heart. I’m also so sad to hear about your struggles in this industry, because this is the best podcast I’ve listened to, you’re both so talented, and educated, and entertaining, you guys deserve so much better. I love watching it, I love nerding out of makeup, I could and do talk about it for hours, hear about it. I’m glad that you’re doing this new type of content, it brings you joy, and it shows. Thats part of the magic. Keep going, I really know you’re building something so special. Not only does it entertain me and help my hangovers on Sunday morning, but as another guy in makeup, that works in beauty, and I’m 21 and just figuring things out, it gives me hope that I can do something of substance in this world of bland, clean-girl, virality nonsense. So uh yeah thank you guys, you’re killing it.

Lemme just say, Johnny and Kevin, I feel for you both. 🥺 It's so incredibly unfair the way you've been overlooked and passed on. It makes no sense whatsoever because I'd trust you over any other beauty KZreadr outside of Robert. You're exactly what the beauty KZread realm needs!! You're saying the things everyone is thinking and feeling, you're giving us honest reviews, honesty about brands, etc. and the world needs more of that! Please don't quit doing what you do. You're important in this space and one day someone will see the value you give to us and take care of you properly. I have no doubt you'll get to where you need to be. 💖 I will tell you, I watch a lot of true crime content, which is very difficult to get monetized due to the topics included. But because of that, I know of sponsors who may be more open to work with you! Lately I'm seeing a lot of phone games being sponsors, a lot of health products like Beam Tea, apps for like yoga classes, things like scent bird, purple mattress, helix mattress, etc.. So maybe you should reach out to those kinda people to help get you sponsored? Since they're willing to advertise on something like true crime, they sure as hell shouldn't see a problem with your content! I'd maybe reach out or have your manager look at some of those sponsors and see if you can get any of them at least. It would be better than waiting around I'd think on some makeup brands who are too stupid to see your worth. 😅 Idk, it's just a thought, and maybe something to look into. Anyways, I love you both so much and I appreciate all your amazing content and I hope it never stops! Know that you're very very appreciated by many, even if brands are too stuck up to realize it yet. ❤

I felt this episode right to the heart….😢 The beauty community is so beat down, only a very few content creators are actually “winning”…the rest are just fighting for scraps. Johnny is unhinged today 🤣 And absolutely right. I can only speak for myself, but I appreciate the honesty. I don’t consume beauty content from large creators like Mikayla because frankly it isn’t enjoyable being sold something every time I view content. I equate it to being at a restaurant and having the server offer something every time they walk by. How much is too much?? It’s sad to see companies omitting your contributions to the beauty space but the reality is brands don’t value honesty. They want you to play the game because they don’t care if the product is good, only that it sells. Honesty interferes with that.

You two are my sanity check, my gurus and font of wisdom and validation. I am NOT 23 with perfect taught skin. I’m a grown up with skin that is less elastic, that has dry spots or discoloration. I honestly stopped buying makeup because nothing delivered, nothing performed as promised but that was because the influencers don’t know the science and physics of cosmetics but you do. I don’t care if you’re man, woman or non-binary, if you know your stuff and have integrity, I want to hear what you have to say. Brands need to figure this out fast but sadly, they’ve been burned by the James Charles types. Catty, dishonest, problematic in their personal lives. Those of us who watch the podcast and your beauty content get it. Not only that, you two together is platinum! It’s the communication, the humor, the analysis and wit of it all! I dearly love you both and you’ve actually got me to buy some of your recommendations. I am amazed and delighted and adore you both❤❤

I wish I could give you guys hugs. Thank you for your radical honesty. This shit-homophobia, ageism, corporate bullshit-needs to come to light. You both are so talented and fucking special. I’ve been into makeup on KZread for forever and you guys are the first makeup artists I’ve EVER seen who showed real passion, real emotions, and inspired and inspiring talent. You’ve given more of a shit about mature women and their makeup than any Mikayla, Meredith, or other female makeup personality on social media. You’re also the first makeup “influencers” to actually give recommendations-Hourglass powders FTW!!!-that are consistently amazing … because they come from 2 decades of actual makeup ARTISTRY and not an algorithm or corporation. Fuck JCPenney and any other entity that refuses to see-or is unable to see because they don’t know shit-your passion, excellence, beauty, experience, talent, kindness, intelligence because you happen to be men. Why does that even matter? Who gives a fuck if a man is wearing lip gloss? Because he wears it better than them? It’s so disgusting. Corporations actively hate LGBTQ until it’s June and they can make money off their suffering. I ADORE you guys and all you’ve accomplished. You are the real deal and deserve the world. I can’t tell you what it means as a 41 year old woman to hear “you are beautiful” each week. Your work has meaning because you put real feelings and real effort. You give a shit. You guys truly have my heart off all you’ve done and who you are. 💖💖💖

Total honesty, you two are the last vestige of beauty influencer media for me. I literally follow no one else at this point. I occasionally seek out videos about a particular product, or I check in with the Welsh twins, but the truth is that I’m just done with all of them. I have more makeup than I will ever reasonably use and I’m looking for creative ways to use it. I’m not buying any damn thing unless it’s truly innovative. I’m also beyond uninterested in supporting corporate manipulation and gatekeeping. I know it’s been rough and can only imagine how frustrated and disheartened you are after all of this, Johnny. Please know that if you decide a Patreon is the way to go, you have many subs who would support y’all there. More of Beautiful and Bothered, less of the other BS. And not that I was shopping at Penney’s anyway, but they’re officially dead to me now too. Makeup has no gender and I seriously cannot believe (except unfortunately I can) the 2012 of this attitude of theirs. Beyond being hateful, from a purely business standpoint they really can’t afford to be alienating such a high-value market segment. I’m all for supporting indie brands, though, so I’ll continue doing that with them directly.

I love you guys. So refreshing having honesty on this level. Ive been on youtube as an older beauty creator for 11 years, plodding along with my long form videos 3-4 times a month, working a regular job 5 days a week that pays my bills. KZread has changed so much, rules, regs and policy changes to benefit them and take away rights and money from the creators. Its all about the ads. Many of the really good creators either stopped making videos, or switched topic to shopping, travel, lifestyle or gossip. Now with short form being king, the world has the interest span of a toddler. We long form creators spend hours filming, then half a day editing, only to see the 1 minute video teasers on TIKTOK getting millions of views more. I get bi-weekly PR, but refuse sponsorships, as many of us long-formers do not sell out to become info-mmercials for brands.

I am a male makeup artist and I swear feel this same struggle of getting jobs. I want you to know you guys have really made an impact on me. I haven’t seen myself on a podcast until this one. I am proud of you both. This podcast is something I look forward to each week! I would absolutely love to be a guest on the pod and talk about what it’s like at the ground level working at the makeup counters in the department store

Thank you for talking about depression and seasonal affective disorder. I had a car accident and have depression and pain 24/7 and knowing others are going through something similar and are able to share that with others is so beautiful to see. You two have me cackling every Sunday and it makes my day. Don’t forget you’re so influential and help others! We ❤ you guys.

What a scorching episode!! ❤️‍🔥 What a legacy you're establishing! You'll be here long after the trend-chasers, and so will we! I just turned 40 this year, and I can't imagine buying products for my "mature skin" without watching your reviews! 💯 And that's just the information you provide, not to mention the regular belly laughs! Thank you both! 🥰

As a 55 year old mom of 2 . I love you both. Having found you because of the sephora stuff I love this podcast because of your honesty. The teaching channel is amazing as you offer different skin types as most for my age do not. I am slowly watching all of the teaching videos to learn more. The creativity you both bring to KZread is so unique and amazing. We all love you! That’s why we are here.

I love that you guys do care about the people who will be spending their hard earned money to make sure that they're educated on what actually works and how to use it. I quite literally wouldn't have ever decided to try my hand at make up if it weren't for all the education I get here. I listened from the get- go, but the chemistry you two have is magic. The beauty industry is very intimidating to the standard consumer and I know I can trust you two to tell it like it is. The brands should pay more attention because I purposely made a list of products you suggested for mature, dry skin and bought off of those suggestions alone. BTW they were amazing suggestions and have made me feel so confident. I hope you get even the tiniest bit of illumination in your hearts based off of the genuine appreciation people have for your work. Thanks you two!

Just subscribed. I can’t tell you how refreshing this is. I never watch any influencer/video that has a ton of boxes in the background. The only way to get that much PR is if you say you LOVE every product. What a waste. Having been in the industry, I appreciate you both! Integrity means everything. Wishing you all the good things that you deserve❤

Johnny, I know you have been at this a while. This podcast with both of you is newer and you do have 🏆 here. I really hope the right people find it and give you the deals you deserve. When people reach out to use your content be like, "hey doll! Here's my manager's email, they can send you a contract!" Having been a hairstylist, it's so weird how the beauty industry works. It's primarily women, yet the people who get the most notoriety are cis hetero males. It's amazing how cis homosexual men who are talented as hell are being overlooked for social media partnerships. Anyway, I hope your winter doldrums fade away and a new burst of energy comes your way.

This makes me sad. I can't imagine how disappointing it must be to be work so hard and receive so little and im so sorry for that. However, I hope you know how much you're doing for me, one single person who desperately needed a friend to laugh with. I'm 43 with severe depression and anxiey. I have let myself go completely since having my daughter 12 years ago. I hate the way I look and feel. Last year at the time I had to go into a mental hospital for 11 days. Since then I've been slowly trying to find out who I am again. Who am I? I'm not just my weight or my changing face and greying hair. Im not just my at times crippling anxiety and depression. I'm a woman, strong and resilient. You both have taught me that I can be beautiful with aging skin. And Kevin, thank you for always reminding me to never give up trying to find something that works because I can find it. I didn't give up and now I feel pretty again.

I used to be super invested in the beauty space back in the height of the KZread beauty community- and its downfall. I don't have tiktok or twitter, so I don't see a lot of the insanity y'all deal with. I don't know the drama until y'all talk about it, and honestly I just can't wrap my brain around the rampant sexism in the beauty industry! I don't understand how women can turn around and create a gender divide, especially in a creative space. I can tell this episode was really emotional for y'all to film, and that these experiences have really been weighing on you. I am very, very grateful that you are sharing this with us, because it needs to be said out loud! I love you guys always!

You and Kevin are my Go-To advisors for all things beauty. You do have an impact! It’s so unfortunate that the industry won’t recognize it. I’m a teacher, so hard work going unappreciated and uncompensated is a familiar story. And the teaching profession is also under attack in social media, so I feel that pain as well. I know it’s not the same as what you must be feeling, though. I hope these companies extract their heads from their collective rears and recognize quality so you can continue the amazing work you do.

Such an important episode! I grew up with mid 2010's YT influencers, and the harm it did to my self-esteem and finances was noticable. I went from using a bit of mascara and blush, to needing a full face of makeup for me to go outside, and be seen by other people, and feeling I needed all the products all the people I followed on YT had. Of course my makeup never looked as good on me, as it did on them, which just made the cycle worse and worse. I'm thankfully out of that vicious cycle now of chasing an untrainable standard, and I think that's why your content has resonated such much with me. Both of you are such important voices is this space which really needs a reality check so badly.

I don't have much to spend so I want to know what's good and what's not and I can see right through a lot of the crap to the extent I've unfollowed a lot of beauty channels. My dear, sweet Johnny and Kevin, PLEASE know that what you are doing is so very important. The trust you're building with your audience, your honesty, your authenticity is so, so, soooo needed in this space, and in the beauty sphere. I really lost my taste for beauty content over the years, because everyone was the same and they were all pushing the same things, and I could SMELL the lies coming through the screen! You two are the only beauty content gurus (?) I watch (besides the Welsh twins 😂, omg, you have to watch their recent video about bread, they are so crazy 😂). And, hearing about how you both are treated as men in the industry broke my heart. You are professional MUAs, your gender is not important in that respect, and this is another wakeup call to remember why I fight! I'm just a middle-aged, married mom, but I use my tiny speck of space on social media EVERY DAY to fight for LGBTQIA+ equal rights and visibility. Well, honestly I'll fight for any marginalized or trodden on people, but right now, we need to get loud about the hate that's spreading against the LBGTQIA community, and the corporations that are allowing it in their spaces!!! Grrrrrr, it really upsets me. I've known so many people who've been hurt, or are not here anymore 😢, because of the hate. I can't sit idly by, ever. And to hear how it's affecting your career.....arghhh!!!!😡 You both are so appreciated, and so loved, please know that. 💜💜💜
