The case of Aafia Siddiqui remains an open wound for us all. It symbolises the inhumanity and barbarism of US foreign policy. The incarceration of this brilliant academic and mother of three, has become a marker of its excesses, of which there were many. She languishes in prison, serving an 86-year sentence for an offence that looks barely credible, the attempted murder of two US officials in Afghanistan in 2008. Her whereabouts before that date has been hotly contested, but her lawyers and activists have patched together the conspiracy surrounding Dr Aafias ordeal. Sadly the welfare of her youngest son Suleman - who has not been seen since her detention in 2003 remains unknown. Presumed dead.
The last time I spoke with Dr Aafias lawyer Clive Stafford Smith he had returned from her prison in Forth Worth Texas - where she had been reunited with her sister Fozia for the first time in 20 years. If you haven’t watched that programme, I would highly recommend you do to give you the backstory to this horrific case. Clive has just returned from a factfinsding mission to Afghanistan, and he has some considerable updates on Aafias case.
Clive has helped secure the release of 86 prisoners from Guantánamo Bay and still acts for the remaining numbers. Since the early days of the War on Terror, he has worked tirelessly to force the Americans and other Western powers to adhere to the rule of law. He has sought to uncover the secret prisons and ghost prisoners that stain the reputation of powerful states - who presented their wars in benevolent terms.

What a wonderful and inspiring human being Clive is! Thank you to the Thinking Muslim for this heartwarming interview. As a woman who is a survivor of child abuse and rape I will write to Aafia in the hope of being able to offer her some solace. And as a (white, Christian) British woman I would like to express my support for my Muslim sisters and brothers in these difficult times.

Isn't it disgusting when the pakistani government sold their souls to the devil. They sold their own blood for money, so called 'muslims' and here is a man working to save her for nothing and yet not even muslim. One day they will see the price the paid for what they did. In the end we all have to face Allah. I hope one day he becomes muslim because he has shown all the beautiful qualities of one. ❤

Not really, we as muslims are pretty capable of heinous crimes as well. Remember the srilankan guy that was burnt in Sialkot? Remember Miss Makhdoom- and her family frnd who chopped her neck off? Remember the 6 years old girl Zainab that was raped to death? Remember the Christian neighborhood that was completely burnt in the name of blasphemy ? The list goes on my dear. There is evil in every country and every race. Let's all work together to take trash out of our homes respectively in order to pass on this world to our younger ones a bit more clean.

Not really, we as Muslims are pretty capable of committing horrific and heinous crimes as well. Remember the Srilankan guy that was burnt to death in Sialkot ? Remember Miss Makhdoom whose family frnd raped, abused her for two days and then eventually chopped off her neck? Remember Zainab the 6 years old girl who was raped to death and thrown in trash? Remember the entire Christian community that was burnt by muslims in the name of blasphemy? Remember the Pakistani guy who used to rape goats and hens till they died ? Remember the necrophiliac group the was arrested in Lahore? Remember the canabal guys that admitted on media that they were addicted to eating human flesh and drinking human blood? Remember Javed Iqbal who killed 100 kids by drowning them into acid? Remember the lady in Pakistan who got media coverage because she chopped off her husband into small pieces and made curry out of his entire body and was on her way to throw away that curry into near by pond and got arrested on her way? These are just a few examples from Pakistan only; the crimes that got media coverage and made a highlighting memory in the masses. The list goes on my dear... We all know the ratio of crimes that are committed and the ones that get reported to police in Pakistan and out of those reported crimes very few make it to media light. All of us have to work together regarding taking the trash out from our homes, cities and countries respectively and clean it up in order to pass on this world to our younger ones.

I've been following Aafia Siddiqi's case for a while. Thank you Clive for putting her case into prospective for all the viewers. I find it disgusting and disgraceful that Pakistani government has not supported Aafia Siddiqui in any shape or form for her release. Aafia has suffered needlessly for far too long on allegations which do not pertain to her or her children. Yes I will be writing to Aafia via yourself Clive and pray for her immediate release. I know exactly why she was targeted but I guess that's not important right now. Thank you also to 'Thinking Muslim' for having Clive on your programme

What's both heartbreaking and terrifying is that there are and were many like her who suffered under the injustice of Americans too. So many beloved Muslims secretly imprisoned without any hope. Reminds me of the stories of Guantanemo Bay. 😢

You should listen to the first part where he explained that the Pakistani army became bounty hunters and started a for profit witch-hunt against their own people. Arresting random citizens and offering them to the US army as terrorists for a bounty.

Dr Afia Siddique was lucky to have a supportive sister who really fought for her. Sadly, there are still many many muslim prisoners, families doesn't know their whereabouts. At least World today knows her truth.
