7 years ago in 2017 I applied to spend my Erasmus semester in 1. Sevilla 2. Valencia or 3. Vigo. Vigo was my last option and my university sent me to Vigo. Before the trip I thought it's a boring little city. Man...i was so wrong. The city and its people will always hold a special place in my heart. I made unforgettable memories there, met so many awesome people and grew as an individual. I was 22 years old, never been to a different country alone before and it was unbelievable. Erasmus made it happen

The biggest employer in Vigo is the Citroen-Peugeot factory, that is why is so big, most people work in the car industry, the second biggest is tourism. By the way, doesn't rain that much, Old fiats don't dissolve like aspirins.

No Stuart, please do not tell the whole world about Vigo!! I'm moving there from California in September and the traffic is bad enough! I stayed there for four months last year and got to join you and your folks on your live streams. It was a very pleasant experience. My apartment was across the street from Playa Samil. You are so right, you can never get tired of that view. Thank you for another wonderful video. Mil abrazos.

Winter storms when you're tucked up in bed has got to be the cosiest sensation ever. I lived in Cornwall and I loved the winter hoolies.

I'm American and I used to live in Vigo in 2020, and I'm planning on returning later this year. I speak both Portuguese and Spanish, and lived in Portugal for several years. Vigo reminds me a lot of Northern Portugal and it's always nice to Galician being front and center on street signs and in govt publications and documents. I was about to say you missed the entire city center in your video but then I caught all the final shots and saw a lot of what I know as Vigo, at least the day-to-day life where I lived. Near where you started is also the Museo do Mar de Vigo, which is quite nice. The day I landed in the city, there was a beautiful, free concert there featuring several Galician musicians and I got there an hour prior and had some of those wonderful views you showed at the start of the video. Some cool news as of recent years: the high speed train project from Lisbon to Vigo, which will take most of this decade to build (and surely be overbudget). It'll make it possible to go end to end in 2 hours (instead of roughly 5.5h), or just Vigo - Porto in 50 minutes (instead of 2h20m). I can imagine deciding to have lunch in Lisbon, spending the afternoon there then hopping the train back in time for dinner. Other recent news is that as of December 2022, there's Vialia, which is a large, brand new bus & train station / mall in downtown Vigo which I was there to see being built but not there to see post-opening. Much better than the old, boring bus station a bit further out of the city center. The city govt is also continuing to install escalators in the city center, for the elderly I suppose. You caught one at 19:33 and there's another, large one built in 2020 on one of the main streets, Gran Via, where El Corte Inglés is located. I also read they're building another not too far from 19:45 if I'm not mistaken. I could go on and on, but I'll end it here.

This year they extended the moving walkway further up Gran Via all the way to the wild horses on Plaza España. It just opened a month or two ago. Vigo will always feel like home to me. Hope it doesn’t get overrun.

This video was both wonderful and nostalgic. My family and I are from Galicia and my Dad was born in A Coruna. We’ve made the walk to Santiago De Compostela. The Cathedral is absolutely breathtaking! I haven’t been back in a while but it’s gloriously green and there wouldn’t be such lush greenery if it wasn’t for those bursts of rainfall. Well worth it! Thanks for taking me back home today!💚😍❤️

I live in Vigo and it is a wonderful place to be. Everyone is so friendly. Castilian is the first language in the city but Gallego is taught in the schools too. Further into the countryside Gallego is the first language but everyone understands Castilian. Vigo is pretty cosmopolitan now. The restaurants are really good and being a vegetarian here holds no problems. Summer weather often starts at the end of May now. The weather is not as rainy as it used to be and it is rarely very cold even in the winter. Thank you for your video.

​@@sidary4762I'm from Vigo and in terms of safety I would say Galicia is definetely one of the safest places you can live in here in Spain. The city is getting more expensive due to its surge in popularity but it's still going to be cheaper than other big cities in Spain. The quality of life here is fantastic and it's a nice place to live in if you dont mind the hills and the rainy seasons.

Some Galician friends took me on a wonderful drive southwards from Vigo and down to the Portuguese bord. The coastline is unspiled and lovely and also full of ancient sites and history. Can't recommend it highly enough! Thanks for the enjoyable reminder!

My Dad is from Vigo and we would spend our summer holidays there. Playa Samil is gorgeous and yes the seafood is amazing. It’s worth travelling south to Baiona as well.

We went to Vigo a few weeks ago after watching this video. Had the best seafood, ever! Also, the people were so friendly and kind. When we tried to order a few dishes, the waitress said not to order too many because the portions were huge...and she was right! Love honest and helpful folks like her.❤

Vigo is also a quick and easy train ride to Viana do Castelo in Portugal, which is also a very, very nice place to visit.

Right about the music being connected to Ireland and Scotland. The Chieftains record 'Santiago' a good illustration of that.

I remember coming to Vigo in 2011, it was one of the ports being visited by the cruise ship I was on. It was spring and it looked very pretty with lots of blossom on the trees. On the day I was there it was sunny and warm and it didn't rain at all, I must have been lucky.

Hello Stuart: one of my favorite videos! It’s a long story that I won’t bore you with but I’m American, live in San Francisco, and am married to an Española. She was born in San Sebastián but her entire family moved to Vigo 25 years ago. I have been visiting Vigo every year for the last 23 years and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. So, needless to say, this touches my heart a bit. Special thanks for the San Isidro acknowledgement a few days ago during a live chat too. Your work is superb and I really look forward to watching it on a daily basis…many times during my long commute home from work! Thank you!!!!

I called in there on a cruise just before lockdown in late November. The Christmas lights were fantastic - best I have ever seen. Love the galician bagpipes too!

I've slept in and walked through this city for 2 nights last summer, once on my way to Santiago, and once on my way back to Porto. It's a beautiful city. Watching this video brought me back to those days. Thank you!

Believe this is where Laurie Lee sailed into on his trip through Spain. Read “As I walked out one September morning”. An inspiration for me when I retired along with the tales of Don Quixote, to cycle through Spain! Such a great trip and a journey I will never forget! Santander to Avila a bit of a “hilly” route but WOW some fantastic scenery, friendly Spanish people in villages and towns, great cuisine and culture, leg busting mountains. Oh to be there again!

We are in the middle of a touring holiday in this region. In fact when you said its a stones throw from Portugal we were sitting at A Guarda looking across the sea inlet with Portugal staring back at us. Super area. Great views.

Hi Stu, visited Vigo twice including Iles Cies. Largest fishing port in Europe. The only thing you missed was the small square in the Old Town which has a wonderful buzzing atmosphere at night and great food including Padrones of course.

I've visited Vigo and really liked it and the rest of the region.👍

Drove through there two weeks ago, started in Porto, then Mondim de Basto, then Braga, then through Vigo to Santiago de Compostela then down to Noia, then right around the coast to Oviedo over 10 days, all of it absolutely fantastic, I’d live there in a heartbeat, bar Fisterra, a place I won’t be returning to.

Like me, you probably couldn't stand all the tourists at Fisterra. You should see that place in August. You have to park about a kilometer away.

@@rayvogensen2983 It’s not even as if it’s a nice place, it’s a run-down dump, and the prices for rooms, food and drink are insane.

Thanks for featuring Vigo. Was there last August for a day and visited many places you featured. I loved the beach area you were at too, all the same locations with the overhead lights shaped like boat anchors. Hills like in Porto. If you get a chance drive to the far south part of Spain south of Vigo called Castro de Santo Trega which is an impressive viewpoint with an old Celtic settlement and an incredible hilltop view in all directions, even has a restaurant at the top to enjoy the view with a meal/drink or snack.

Haha, those hills nearly did you in Stu! (The “Nah!” at the bottom of the stone stairway cracked me up.) Here’s another tip: it’s not just the climb from the waterfront up into the city center, if you keep climbing you get to the south/southeastern part of the city, a series of ever steeper rolling hills, leading to incredible viewpoints like Monte do Alba. And yes, if you walk everywhere, it does get you into shape! I can’t wait to return. ❤️ Vigo.

Hiya Stuart. I've been living in this wonderful city for a few years now. Easy to find work as a teacher but it might pay considerable less than some other cities. Yes it rains a bit from oct - may but it's only water. I am a cyclist and yes it gives your legs a damn good work out. Lovely video. Next time you're in town give me a shout and we can have a beer.

Excellent video that brought back many a good memory for me Stuart. The company I worked for before retirement is located in Pontevedra, I used to fly into Porto, Portugal and travel up. Had many a good seafood meal in Vigo and Pontevedra. Thank you for reviving those great memories and the accuracy of the commentary was spot on. 👍🏻

I wouldn't consider Vigo a quiet and peaceful place. It is a densely populated city with a lot of traffic. Nearby you do have quieter and more peaceful places, but not in the month of August. Samil beach, which Stuart showed, is packed with people.

Your video brought back happy memories of my time spend working on a Hydroelectric dam at Salto de Friera on their Rio Minho which is the border with Portugal .I loved in Melgaco Portugal so enjoyed enjoyed travelling north to towns like Santiago de Compostela Compostela and south to Porto ,the best of both countries . The company I was seconded to was MZOV who built the railway from Madrid to Vigo hence their initials taking in Zamora and Orense. I always assumed that Orense was the main city . Sadly didn't visit Vigo although the railway passed by our site .

I've been to Vigo it's very nice. I like the plays las America's just outside the city. Pontevedra is good as well, check out O Grove for the best sea food.

I’m really enjoying your travelling Vlogs around Spain. We are taking our caravan to northern Spain in July from Santander for a few weeks, going down to Segovia, then to Salamanca, Lugo and stopping along the coast, before getting the ferry back to the UK. It is the best beer in Spain

I don’t know Galicia, but I know Asturias well and I know a good number of Gallegos and the cuisine. Yum! The geography is gorgeous in the NW, the people are beautiful, but it’s quite wet and cold, sometimes no summer. Having lived in a similar clime in the US I’d know what I’m in for and I’d also yearn for sun in winter.

Portuguese came from Gallego! At one point it was called Gallego Portugues. They are one at one point, Portugal and Galicia.

Hi, I can't remember the exact place but in most restaurants you'll get a 'menu' for around that price.

Stu, at what times of the day do you do these walkabouts? Most of the videos show places that are relatively empty of people.

If you plan on teaching English there is now a little problem. Anyone coming from outside the EU will only be able to stay for 90 days within a six-month period. That now includes British but not Irish. To hire Americans or Canadians it is very difficult. The first question we ask a candidate is "Do you have an EU passport?" It is also essential to get some kind of EFL certificate, preferably the CELTA, the most widely recognized English teaching qualification in the world. A native speaker, with a university degree, could get by with an online course, but to be honest, you would only get a job at a smaller, less prestigious school, perhaps in a small town in the interior.

Ría y estuario are two different things. I guess there is not a word for ría in English and therefore they use estuary for both, but they are not the same.

When we were in Valencia, we were told about carrying water to rinse the spot where your dog pees. I see that it's the same thing in Vigo. Is this a nationwide thing? Or does the requirement change from place to place?

@@shinyshinythings when I visited Valencia, I was with some friends who live there and they told us about it. I asked if a spray bottle wouldn't be enough, and they said that it HAD to be a splash of water and that it was mandatory. She said it was the law. I guess the legality of this changes from region to region.

Beautiful city, but it's off my list due to the rain. Lived my whole life in Southern California, between San Diego and Los Angeles, so when it rains, I'm not a happy camper. Looks like I'm relocating to Valencia in September, but also considering other Spanish cities.

In Madrid or anywhere in Spain you don't see anyone dressed in flamenco either, except at the fairs in Seville. dumb obsession of relating flamenco to Spanish culture and tradition, when it is only a relatively modern musical genre from Andalusia.

Sorry mate but the city of La Coruña is a MILLION TIMES BETTER!!!! And i'm not being biased! 😆Hey Mistere EStuart!! I'm not sure for how long and how many places you are going to visit in Galicia but you have to go to the Isla de la Toja which isn't far from Pontevedra. Just wondering. will you be going into the other provinces of Galicia( A Coruña, Ourense, Lugo)? You are right about the waters being cold in Vigo, it's the vast Atlantic waters that bring the chill where as the beaches in A Coruña and Lugo are a bit warmer even though they are more north than Vigo. I'm not sure what you're budget is with the meals but you should try some of the fish like lenguado or rape(yeah....i know what you're thinking! ) it's actually the Monkfish. You have to try the caldo Gallego even though it's best consumed in winter time. And by the way, i love the rain in Galicia especially in the wintertime.
