Exploring the Sound of the Meinl FD14IBO Bodhran | Irish Drum Review & Demo

Музыка

Welcome to Black Bridge Sound, your go-to destination for greasy home recording insights on KZread! Today, we're diving into the traditional world of Irish music with the Meinl FD14 Bodhran.
The Bodhran, a staple in Celtic and Irish music, is a simple yet profound instrument. Crafted from a wooden drum shell with a goat skin head, it's played with a Tipper on one side while the other hand rests on the back side of the head, allowing for pitch adjustments and nuanced playing. As someone with a drum set background, exploring the Bodhran has been a fascinating journey for me, offering a unique perspective on rhythm and tone.
This Meinl Bodhran falls into the mid-range category, making it accessible without breaking the bank. We tested it with different Tippers, from solid ones to hot rod styles, each offering distinct tonal qualities. The Bodhran's sound quality and playability impressed me, especially considering its price point compared to custom-made professional-grade options.
In my research, I discovered three tiers of Bodhrans: decorative non-tunable ones, mid-range like this Meinl model, and high-end custom-made instruments. While high-end Bodhrans can be challenging to access, Meinl's international presence makes their products widely available through stores like Guitar Center and Long & McQuade.
For beginners or intermediate players seeking a dependable and travel-friendly Bodhran, this Meinl FD14 is a solid choice. It boasts a pleasing aesthetic with its beautiful wood grain and delivers a satisfying sound. Priced at $230 Canadian dollars, it strikes a balance between affordability and quality.
If you're eager to dive deeper into Bodhran playing, I recommend checking out Ruairi Glasheen's KZread channel. He offers a wealth of playthroughs, lessons, tutorials, and historical insights into the Bodhran:

A comprehensive demonstration, I bought a Cahoun from The Acoustic Room in Hamilton a couple of years back and have had some fun with it. would love to do some drumming and/or acoustic guitar playing with something like this.

On the front side a Lewitt MTP 440 DM which is very similar to an SM57 if you’ve already got one laying around. On the back side an AKG C214. The AKG mics I’ve seen used at pretty affordable prices locally! Just remember to flip the phase on one of the mics if you do it this way and set them about an equal distance on each side from the skin. I also chose to EQ a bit in post with a bump in the low end, a fairly wide cut in the mids, and a bump in the high end like I would normally do to a rack Tom on a kit and added a little compression and reverb.

Sounds killer with some basic chops, creative microphone placement, and that bit of reverb sprinkled about. Winna, winna, greasy chicken dinna ...
