Exploring The Entire Ben Simmons Saga

Спорт

Ben Simmons was said to return for Game 4 of the 2022 playoff game vs the Boston Celtics, but he did not play. After a season full of drama with both the 76ers & the Nets, Ben Simmons has managed to keep his names in the headlines despite having not played a single NBA game this last season. The last time he played was in Game 7 against the Atlanta Hawks, where he passed up a dunk & had his worst playoff series yet. In this video, we explore the entire saga around Ben Simmons right down to when Doc Rivers was defending him to when he had back surgery recently after suffering a herniated disk in his lower back.

The Ben Simmons Saga was one of the most exhausting, frustrating storylines I've ever followed. Every single person gets frustrated at work, but they still show up and do their jobs because that is what they are paid to do. There are people digging ditches for 10 hours a day, who hate their boss and hate their co-workers, and who get paid barely enough to put food on their table, but they still show up every day to do their jobs.

congrats to everyone reading this comment, you and i both played the same number of minutes as Ben Simmons did this season. mental health is serious and all that and Ben Simmons isn't obligated to tell us what he's going thru, but as someone who recently experienced relapsed with old sicknesses i thought i got over with, i really couldn't find anything in me to understand or sympathize with him. there's people out there who have debilitating mental illnesses that hinder normal functioning and still try to find a job or go to work because they don't have an alternative. there's people out there who have to take care of their family who's suffering full-time, and don't have access to the resources a high-level athlete like Ben Simmons does. someone who has $20M to lose wouldn't easily garner sympathy at all, not in this economy. and like, Steve Nash has a displaced vertebrae and dude balled out while having chronic back pain, so he probably knows a thing or two abt Simmons' back surgery.

Looking back, it's just amazing that Joel Embiid said he wasn't "here to babysit" his All-Star/All-Defense co-star, and got absolutely no backlash for it! Normally that would get you roasted as an awful teammate, but in this case, even the most polite NBA fans sided with him on that.

As someone who struggles with depression, I find it pretty easy to put myself in Ben's shoes. First you look at someone like Kawhi, who may people claim quit his way out of SA. He has his own medical people saying his leg was injured, but the SA medical staff cleared him to play. He ended up sitting out all season and then got traded to Toronto. And Kawhi got to grow up in a veteran locker room, under legends. He didn't get drafted and then immediately thrust into a primary role. Maybe Ben truly wants to play and just can't bring himself to overcome his demons on the court. Maybe if he wasn't making millions of dollars and really needed the money, maybe he could find the strength to push forward and carry on. I don't know if he's faking or actually suffering. If it's the former, it's easy for me to dismiss him. But if it's the latter, I definitely feel some empathy for him. Maybe I'm just an idiot.

No teams have distinct play styles anymore you don't have teams that are built around a post scoring big, you don't have teams that run complicated offenses like the Princeton etc. Every game just feels like its being determined by spreadsheets and trying to isolate everything into who can shot the most 3pt shots

I'm a retired psychologist. Ben Simmons is one good therapist or one good Iguodala-like teammate away from being a good or great player. These guys might be good basketball analysts, but psychology was my job for 30 years. I'm telling you, don't give up on him yet.

He's got talent. But I'm not sure he even wants to play to win. It's clear he likes the lifestyle that comes with being a star in the NBA, but when given so many chances in Philly, he couldn't live up to being the first pick & franchise player they wanted him to be

  • @Archie583

@@tooforwon241 That's why I'm saying he needs some good psychotherapy. He clearly has the physical attributes and the talent. It is all psychological. Please don't reduce it to "he likes the lifestyle that comes with being a star" but you're not sure that "he even wants to play to win." It is way more nuanced than that. Everything can't be simplified to "either/or." The young man needs some help to get his head on straight. That's why I am saying don't give up on him yet. In clinical terms, the behavior you are describing as liking the lifestyle is mostly his overcompensation for feelings of inadequacy. I'll leave it at that. If he gets his thinking right, he can be something special. Probably never in Philadelphia but ask Andre Iguodala what it's like trying to live up to the expectations of the fans and the media in Philadelphia. He talks about it in his book "Sixth Man."

He is getting best therapist he can get. But I have mental issues too, but you don't really know how long it will take to recover from when it comes to mental issues unlike physical issues. If you are psychologist you would know. With all those best therapist, how many sports stars overcome their traumas in short time? Because he needs to get better now, if you want to get paid, sports teams are not charities, brooklyn is paying 30-40millions of dollars for year salary and +@. How can you expect teams to pay him30~40millions when you have no idea when he is going to recover? And they can have allstar level player with that much salary. Reality is tough no job is going to wait for someone more than 2years...people say they are sorry for them but he made how much? 100mil? 150mil? 200mil? And he choose to spend money like it was nothing, I don't feel sorry for him. He might not have spot for nba anymorr but look at the luxury new clothes he's wearing every game. When he's mental state is not good and when he might not recover by the end of his career, he shouldn't spend money like that, and he has like 3more year contract? About 100mil? Yeah, bad for him...because people who suffers mental issues don't usually have that much of money and worry about their future life, and bills to pay monthly. But they have to show to work, because if you don't you are going to the streets, and think about how many people are in situation like that. If he can just givr up on ridiculous luxury life, he is set for life with 100m when he retires. I am not sayin we all should give up on his mental issues, but nba teams and fans does not have to pay millions of his salary when he cannot play, if he is not getting paid, why not, we can wait as long as he wants, his family and friends should not give up on his mental issues, but fans and teams should not pay salary for him to recover from his mental issues. If that happened to normal people who works at the office, would have been fired already with debts they cannot handle by themselves, But he made so much more money than normal people can in their life time. It would take 1000years to earn 100mil with 100,000dollar years salary. Which he will get paid. And he already made how much? 200mil? By the time his contract is over, he made 300mil in 10years. If this was physical injury for other nba players, their career is over. 2years of missing game, doesn't know when he can play, and when he comes back, we don't know how good he will be. Just because its a mental issue, do nba and nba fans have to give him more chance? Players who have injuries didn't ask to be get injured too, what make him special to be treated different?

@@dw13012 Just because a therapist is highly paid by the team or the league doesn't mean he or she is a great therapist, nor does it mean that the therapist is a good fit for a particular individual. It sometimes takes weeks, months, or years to find the right therapist and do the work that needs to be done. It's up to the team how much they want to pay and how much time they want to wait vs. just cutting their losses and moving on. So, I don't disagree with you on any of what you said. But I do stand by my original point, which was that Ben could work through all of his issues with the right therapist, and with the help of the right mentor, an Andre Iguodala-type player, he could come back strong. But hey, I don't own the team, and I'm not paying his salary, so it's not up to me if the investment they've already made is worth the wait and extra money.

BTW this whole saga also makes the Nets organization look like a bunch of clowns. First they say they are not going to pay Kyrie, then they pay Kyrie when KD gets hurt. His behavior drives away Harden who is evolving into a pass first PG, which is what Durant needs. Now, Durant wants to play with this WoW buddy, so they retain Mr. World is Flat; and trade Harden for Simmons and some RPs who disappear in the playoffs. The original acquisition of Harden involved them basically trading away their entire future: so effectively they traded 7 FR picks for Simmons, the wrong Curry and Drummond. Then you have the coaching staff. Kyrie and KD claim they don't need a head coach so they drive away D' Antoni and Atkinson, and get Steve Nash, whose entire strategy is give the on of the two Ks the ball and hope for the best. Said coach doesn't know Harden is being traded until hours before the trade. He also doesn't seem to know when Ben Simmons will be back; with him, the FO and Ben Simmons all having wildly different timelines.
